The not so great was the lobby concession area was a hot mess. Burnt popcorn being sold-like you not only could smell it, but see it on the kettle corn in the case. The floor was a mess, straw wrappers and popcorn and some guy added to it by dropping his alcohol drink and it spilled all over the floor and splashing up on me as I'm waiting for some pretzels to get made. (A worker wiped it up with his foot and a couple Sham-Wow cloths.) So the kid waiting on me took forever putting on his plastic gloves, shuffled over to make the pretzels, then stops, walks away-had no idea where. I figured I'd grab some water at the drink station. There's usually clear cups for water, but last night no cups. So I thought they either ran out or just use the soda cups. I grabbed a the middle cup. I was thirsty, small wasn't going to cut it. Hubby goes to pay while I go back to wait for the pretzels. Two boxes get put up for a lady, but no, those are chicken wings orders. The kid suddenly remembers the pretzels he took out of the freezer. Seconds later he hands me a box. The box was cold but it didn't register with me because at that moment my hubby says they charged him $7.00 for my cup of water. He said "fountain water is free I thought?" The kid said "yeah, but only in the clear cups, (which there weren't any) so I have to charge you for the cup." We go to our seats, my seat won't recline back. The feet part came out but the back was straight up and down. My hubbies leaned back, my friend to my right's did too. But not mine. I take a deep breath, it's ok. I'll enjoy my pretzels. Open the box, pick one up, it's frozen. Like rock solid frozen. I can't make this stuff up. So I walk back down to the concessions and a nice manager lady noticed me approaching. I said these are frozen. She grabbed the box and picked one up, she was like omg! These weren't even cooked! She went around to the prep area and showed a couple kids-one was the one that messed up the order. He didn't say a word to her. He just stood there. The other girl jumped into action with her manager because they were behind on pretzel orders. I got my pretzels fast. Rushed back to my non reclining seat and enjoyed them. But this is why I go to Kenwood.

Easy parking, accessible entrance, bright clean lobby with two people working concessions. We decided to get one popcorn and soda to share and the girl pointed out there was a special package price for that. We inquired about the portable close caption device because my husband sometimes has trouble hearing dialogue clearly. She went right back and got one, no charge for this. It fits in the cup holder with a flexible gooseneck holding the little screen. This thing worked great! I realized later my husband didn't whisper "what did he say?" even once in a 2-hour movie! Seats were comfortable. Not the most modern recliners, but roomy, good legroom, with cup holders. The theatre sound was excellent, the screen vivid and brilliant. We were given 3D glasses as it was a 3D presentation and that was really mind blowing I must say. When we exited there were two staff members wishing everyone a good day as they waited for the theatre to empty so they could go right in and clean. Speaking of clean, the bathroom was spotless too. The YES Cinema & Conference Center is the premiere theatre in Columbus, Indiana when it comes to…read morethe indie/arthouse scene including alternative, cultural, and educational films along with the occasional cinematic classics. They also do run first-run features - for example, Black Adam is currently screening and they will be getting Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the new Avatar flick among others. The YES Cinema is run by a Columbus, Indiana non-profit called Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center, an area organization that assists numerous support systems, i.e. neighborhood improvement, education and employment development, health education. and more. This is a smaller theatre with only two screens. However, it's a well cared for cinema and they host the annual YES Film Festival that just ran this past weekend. You can also rent spaces for business meetings, private screenings and corporate and private parties. YES Cinema's two screens have relatively newer chairs, though they fall short of the more premium/luxury seating options available in a lot of theaters these days. That said, they're quite nice compared to a lot of indie/arthouse options you will find. The screens also do offer Dolby digital surround sound (which is fairly standard for most cinema chains, however, not always for smaller theaters or arthouse cinemas). The employees I met were friendly, the location in downtown Columbus is convenient, parking is free and plentiful, and accessibility is overall quite solid including parking, entryways, and screens. The theatre is clean inside and out and I was super comfortable. In terms of snacks, they do serve wine and beer here. You are not allowed to take in food or drinks of your own and they also have a notice that backpacks are not allowed. You can get a free small popcorn on your birthday (with ID and only on your actual birthday). Fun facts? The first film shown at YES Cinema was White Christmas (2004). The film "Columbus" holds the box-office record for sales at YES Cinema (which is incredibly appropriate - not only is the film set in Columbus, but it was actually filmed in Columbus). Under ordinary circumstances, I'd probably stick with a 4-star rating for the cinema. However, there are two reasons I'm offering up the 5-star: 1) Because of the cinema's charitable roots it really is a movie theater that benefits a great cause. 2) Ticket prices for movies are typically $5 - that's right around half most theaters and even less than some matinee prices here in Indy. They do sometimes charge more for special events, but their prices make it affordable for families and for those on a limited income. There's an awful lot to love here. If I lived near Columbus, I'd be here all the time. If you're in the Columbus area, I definitely recommend it. It may not quite measure up to your more premium cinemas, but it's an awesome little theatre and one of Indiana's true cinema gems.
