I was in and out in about 10 minutes. If I was in the area and needed something specific I would go again. The pharmacists do not believe they should ever have to answer the phone as will never in a million years pick up if you need to call them. You will just sit there waiting on the phone as they wait you out so that you will just hang up and never receive the help that you need. Pointless to go through them. read more

Worst customer service I have ever experienced. Had a "new" check out girl move a Rice Krispies display right infront of me after standing in her line for over a half hour. She turned off the light and told me to go find another line. Laughed about it with her mom who apparently was the customer infront of me who was taking her home. I asked for a manager and the other Giant Eagle employees refused and told me, " For your information, she's new." Other than Jayden who took over her line and apologized, the rest of the staff simply were covering for her disgusting behavior. Will not be returning. I wouldn't go here. But if you do, always carry an umbrella - to cover up the live feed police cameras recording every single thing you do in the parking lot. I dislike most of the things about this place, so I usually shop all I can at Aldi and only come here if it is absolutely necessary. I bought tea here and all of it tasted like it had chemicals in it. This is not even safe for anyone to be drinking, so I had to return it. Don't even try to go through the never ending line to return something, especially if you don't have a receipt. They give you hell and stand there arguing with you about how you should have a receipt, what a waste of fucking time! The sketchy people that hang out there will move way too close to you(withing 4 inches to your face) and when you say you would like some personal space will get offended and make a huge scene about it. Then the security guard will come by and suggest that you stop talking with the other person that is saying horrible things to you. My advice is to never go there in the first place. This store gets a bad rap for its location which I don't think is bad at all. I shop here as its a mile and a half from where I live in Station Square. Parking is plentiful and the selection of items is great in my opinion. I'm surprised they offer sushi at this location given the demographics of the area. This giant eagle has been going through a remodel. I would say that the flow of it is much better now. The pharmacy is at the far left of the entrance rather than awkwardly placed at the front. I personally still do not use the pharmacy because they were slow before and I found a better one. Some groceries have been totally changed around but I would say its better. No more walking alllllll the way to the end of the store for a quick loaf of bread. I would say the most noticeable change since remodel is the sale of beer. (Finally. Youd think the neighborhood known for drinking would've been one of the first GEs to sell beer.) the prepared foods area seems larger. There's also a seating area with coffee (closed off late night so don't worry about people loitering inside). There are also new registers, updated customer service area & new self check outs (only 3 i believe) Although the remodel is great, the cashiers honestly are still pretty slow. & while the self check outs have moved away from front door area to cut back on congestion, there is still no designated line and an awkward line and blocking of aisles happens. Honestly not bad. This GE was way overdue for an update and its not so bad despite 4 months of grocery store chaos lol. read more

Don't shop here during the pandemic. I lost count of the number of noses sticking out. They let customers shop with out a mask. When you come in for the safe shopping hour in the morning the deli and hot food are not open. So the whole reason to shop there instead of online is not available to anyone older or trying to keep themselves safe. At the beginning of the pandemic I called into their customer service line to share mask studies showing what the bests masks to wear are. They did not care. No one in charge of safety during this situation has reached out to me. Order you food online from someone else. Giant Eagle treats it customers literally as if they are expendable. read more

This is a review for the Curbside Express grocery delivery service coming from this store location. And I must say, I cannot believe I've become a Giant Eagle fan. This is like parting of the Red Sea territory folks. I have been waiting for a good grocery delivery service ever since I moved to the Burgh. Grocery shopping takes entirely up too much time and is not what I want to spend my time doing on a weekend. But because I live in the Strip, I am forced to go into Shadyside and far up north Penn to get my essentials. No store has everything and between the driving and the shopping and the loading​ and unloading it takes upwards of 4-5 hours. Now for less than $10, I can order any amount and get them delivered to my door. So worth it. That being said, I have two suggestions for improvement: -- Almost everytime​ I've had a delivery the person has always been on their phone making a personal call. It's kinda rude. You can't wait five minutes? -- I wish there was a bigger selection to order from. Basically I'd like to be able to order anything that's on their shelves. Even lipstick. I hope they make enough off this enterprise to keep it going. This has been GREAT and given me back a part of my precious weekend. Go Curbside Express! Website is terrible if you want continuing service. They have made it extremely difficult for people to use who need pick up or delivery service. It's the logon stuff that will get you and the changing of stores you selected to pick up from that was not the store you selected when you placed the order, to not recognizing google saved passwords and then not sending out emails to change password in a reasonable fashion. The unwanted step-child of the Giant Eagle stores. If the rumors are true about competition moving into the South Side maybe they'll do a nice remodel of this place and add some space. If it weren't for the awful placement of the bus stop that seems to draw some trashy people and the constant blaring of music from people showing off their cars in the parking lot, it might actually feel a lot safer to walk to and from the store. For such a prime area as the South Side, it's such an odd location to have a plaza with stores in it. It's like no one were to see these store and it just got pushed back out of sight from Carson St. Fells other worldly. One thing I don't miss since I don't live in the South Side anymore. read more

This review is of The Pharmacy at Giant Eagle Wharton St. I was at my doctors today, who called in a prescription here and wanted to to take it right away since I am in SEVERE pain. When I got there to pick it up I was told it was not called in. I know it was because I was sitting right next to the nurse when she did. I watched her call. I was told to call my doctors office so I did while I did some shopping. The nurse verified with me where she called and what she called in and it was all correct. I went back too The Counter, I will no longer call it a Pharmacy, and had the same girl checked again. I verified what was called in and my Doctors name. The girl then stated here its is and told me " It won't be covered till the 27th when today is the 21st and When I asked her why, she didn't know why and went to talk to the Pharmacist. I assume. He never came down to talk to me and she told me it wasn't covered. I said fine! How much is it and she re-answered back it's not covered by my insurance. I said fine, again. How much is it without insurance and I was told $9 and some odd cents so I said OK Ill take it fill it. The girl then hesitated and looked down and said we will have to order it you can have it tomorrow. I just turned around and walked away in pain. read more

Everything considered, 2.5 stars for the Southside Giant Eagle, but I am being generous and rounding up. Until recently, when they began the process of revamping the store, I would have given it 1.5 stars. This is a typical grocery store, where you can find much of what you need and with the improvements, they are now offering a MUCH better variety than before. Think, things like offering low fat half and half in addition to fat free and regular. Seems like a trivial thing, but it isn't. I am impressed with the effort to include more variety as well as some more natural/specialty items (e.g. a variety of nut butters instead of just JIF and Skippy). The quality of the produce has also gone up significantly. Before, I would get a seemingly fresh-looking item home and have it spoil quickly. I am crazy with picking my produce too--I'm that lady standing by the apples for 20 minutes making sure I get just the right four apples! Meat is hit or miss at the SS GE, but more often than not, their beef looks super questionable. Chicken is very up and the air. Turkey is generally okay. The seafood is extremely expensive and not fresh at this store, which is sad. The main reason that this store gets such a low rating is because of the horrible employees and rude customers. I know the store can't decide who shops there, but they can certainly hire more security to help control shoppers better. More than once, I have been *this close* to getting run over by people on the scooter carts who were clearly on drugs. There are lots of people with multiple carts and screaming children who block the aisles and purposely do not let other shoppers through. I have even had two other customers cut me in line once and then found out they were friends with the cashier. Normally I would stand up for myself, but I was pretty sure they had weapons on them, so I just let it slide. Most of the time, I drive to another store across town to avoid the clientele at this GE. I can honestly say I have NEVER had a positive checkout experience at this Giant Eagle. Not once, and I have shopped there probably 40+ times since moving to the neighborhood. I even had a cashier recently ask me "Do you really need all this sh*t? I'm about to go on my break." On another occasion, after pointing out that an item was rung up improperly (we are talking a several dollar difference), the cashier called me cheap. She said it jokingly, but I found it inappropriate. Even when nothing like the two cases above has happened, I have felt that the cashiers were extremely hostile. Similarly, when I have asked for help from someone on the floor, they are not nice about helping or ignore me. The exception is one man with a military look who I suspect is the store manager. He is super helpful and even goes out of his way to ask if customers need assistance. Despite all the bad things I mentioned above, I do appreciate the upgrades to the checkout lanes, layout of the store and entrance (no longer a weird entrance/exit that is opposite what it is intuitive). If Giant Eagle can take steps to friendlier employees and hire additional security to keep things in order, I think it has the potential to be a quality grocery store now that they are offering more variety. They are still super overpriced on everything, but do offer good sales each week. read more

This poor Giant Eagle. It leaves much to be desired. It's the forgotten Giant Eagle amongst all the kings of the Market District Giant Eagles. It's the Red Headed Step Child of the Giant Eagles. I lovingly call it Ghetto Bird. My fav Giant Eagle is the one in the Waterfront. But since I live in Mt. Washington sometimes it's just not worth it to sit in traffic on 376 when I need a mid week grocery run but don't have the time to battle traffic. This is my middle resort, considering the Mt. W Foodland is the absolute LAST resort (ONLY for canned food). A cop greets you as you walk in the door, nice touch. There's also usually at least a couple people having a very nice conversation, with themselves...It's great entertainment while you're trying to find the whole wheat spaghetti. They're usually pretty well stocked and have mostly everything I need. The only downer is if I need my quick/cheap sushi fix iti isn't made fresh in house....so whatever they get in is questionable....and I avoid it at all costs. Also, their organic section is pretty small compared to Market Districts. Oh well, you can't have it all at Ghetto Bird. But I'm ok with it for the location.... read more

Pros -- There is a red box here and it carries some stuff that Aldi does not have, like Rye bread and Corned beef for some homemade Ruebens. It is also pretty close to my house and stays open pretty late. I can also go here to get an EZ pass, I am just too lazy. Cons -- Generally a bit dirty and the produce is a bit spendy and crappy. Middles -- The self-check is usually ok. There is typically a machine for just credit cards so those who know what they are doing can fly through the line. Unfortunately, this machine has started telling me to "put the lotion in the basket" even though the lotion is in the basket. You just have to push the scale down a little and get back to scanning. read more

I gave up on this store after the remodel. It was not great to begin with. Now they have sacrificed food for beer. In the last three trips I have not been able to find everything on my short shopping list once. They no longer have individual green peppers or more than one bottle of Coke Zero. On one trip they were out of margarine. How is a grocery store ever out of margarine? They moved stuff around and added beer. The sacrifice my brand of cat food was well worth it to have a ninety third place to buy beer on the South Side. They also chased away the jitneys that I relied on when making a large shopping trip. They still do not have enough registers open.They still cannot clean their bathrooms. They have They also took out one of the self serve registered which was your only hope for getting out of there when your were still young. How is it that every other Giant Eagle is putting in more of these and they are putting in fewer. Now there is a long line for them. On top of that they still have all the problems the old machines had. You cannot use your own bags with out needing staff assistance. They also put them further from the door. Now you need to fight your way through all the disappointed customers that could not fine everything on their shopping lists as you leave the store. The salad bar does not look any larger than the one it replaced. It may even be smaller. On the one day I tried to use it they did not have lettuce or tomatoes. So either it was really popular or they needed the space for Pabst Blue Ribbon. I asked two employees if it was going to be restocked. It was not either of their jobs. I complained to a manager and they shrugged and told me it was not their fault. Everything was the fault of corporate. So I called the main HQ. They directed me to a voice mail of someone that was too busy to call me back for two weeks. This person sounded helpful but was not in a position to take notes. Thus I had to send them an email. I have not heard back from them and not one of my requested items has appeared in the store. So I guess the bottom line is that if you counted on a better store to walk to you are out of luck. Oh how I miss Swartz. The meat was so much better there and they always had soda margarine and milk. And great job on killing the convenience store closest to me with a Getgo. Once again no margarine but this time it is by design. They want to sell you five dollar generic butter. Nice job on the price gouging. If you actually need a bottle of wine lots of luck. There are gas stations in Mississippi with a better wine selection. I am not making fun of Mississippi. Their gas stations often do wine better than Giant Eagle. I can get a bottle of something I never heard of to dull the pain of not being able to get margarine (Sorry, but on two of the three trips they did not have Margarine). I hope you like boxed wine. Beer I suppose they have the staples. They have a limited selection making them worse than every beer distributor and the bars that will sell you a six pack on the South Side. They bent over backwards to wedge a crummy beer distributor into a store that did not have room for it. They could have rented more room in the shopping center and built something nice. That probably would have been too much like caring about the customers. So in alcohol they also fail. I do not understand how the person in charge of this remodel is proud of what they did. I suppose they look at the new paint and pretend it was all worth it. I gave this place two stars before the remodel. Back then you dared not use the bathroom and what staff they did have was friendly and helpful with only a couple exceptions. Now they have all the same problems with a new paint job and less food. I suppose this store is great if you need a case of Iron City and the worst hoagie that you can buy in Pittsburgh. Please fix this Giant Eagle. Check your emails and get back to me. read more

There's still no grocery in the Hill, so many Hill residents come here by bus to do their shopping. There are always lots of folks standing around in the parking lot socializing, which brings a smile to my face. The store itself is small by Giant Eagle standards so selection is limited, but I can't complain about having a major grocery store right in the heart of the south side. Also, you can park in their lot on Friday and Saturday nights while you're partying it up on Carson Street. Ignore the signs about towing unauthorized cars - that has never been enforced. read more

Ghetto Eagle... I have to give you two stars and not one because I have no choice often times but to keep coming back to you.... oh, and I noticed your produce section has been doing much better! Thank God there. Unless you live in Southside or a surrounding area without a grocery store, there are plenty of other better grocery options but for those of us who are down this way, at least we have something, right? This place can be a nightmare... people hanging out blaring bass in the parking lot, staff too busy chit chatting to do their jobs, items not restocked regularly... things keep getting moved around (took me a month to find the Boboli pizza crusts since they were moved and staff could not even tell me where they were), the list goes on. If you need a good grocery store and reside near the Southside, I suggest going to the Waterfront or Brentwood.... or Shadyside Market District.... there are so many better options when you are not in a rush. And Giant Eagle... WE NEED A BETTER GROCERY STORE DOWN HERE! If they do not come in down here, I wish another chain of some sorts would.... with so many residents and people who often like to walk, it would do very well! It's close to home, so this is where I go to do my grocery shopping. I have nothing useful to say when it comes to this Giant Eagle as a store. But the pharmacy? Ugh! I had three prescriptions faxed over by my doctor's office. A leisurely 45-minute walk later, I'm at the pharmacy, ready to get my medication and head home. But no, my medications are not ready. They will take another 15-20 minutes. I sigh, and walk around the store for a while, trying to entertain myself. Finally, I go back, and am ready to pay for my medicine. Wait. There should be three, not just two. Which one is missing? The one that is most important. I had to wait ANOTHER 45 minutes for them to fill one prescription AFTER waiting almost a half hour! There was no apology. There was no attempt to fill the missed prescription faster. Problems like this have been happening to me for years, until I have finally made it clear to both my doctor and the pharmacist that I will not be returning to this pharmacy if I can help it. On the other hand, I'm friends with one of the guys in the deli, and it's fun to go pester him when he's working! read more

Normally closer to $1.19 up to $1.79 but available for under a $1/lb at other stores, I was disappointing to see GE price gouging during these hard times. read more

I frequent this giant eagle often because the location is convenient. I would love to give it more stars but I just can't. The bathrooms are not sanitary and they allow people to panhandle outside of the doors. I politely decline giving money to the same 3 individuals every time that I need to get groceries. Inventory is often low and so I sometimes have trouble completing my shopping list.The pharmacy is really great and their staff is extremely helpful so I really appreciate that. I also noticed that they have a lot of long time employees which is nice because it means that management treats their employees well. read more

I was very impressed with my first few experiences at this store. The clerk at Customer Service took time to answer my many questions and prepare two money orders and a fax that took forever, even though he was done with his shift during our transaction. During my next visit the pharmacist went out of her way to transfer scripts from my old store and apologized profusely when her computer froze. On a third trip a young male employee stopped and asked if he could help me find something! I found the store to be bright, cheerful and the selections, impressive (I was looking for some specialty homeopathic medicines.) Having said that, I'm new to this neighborhood, and just moved here from Greenfield. I grew to love my old Greenfield Eagle, but I believe if some of these reviewers went there they *might* have more perspective. This may not be Market District, but it's a very nice store. read more

My wife and my visit this giant eagle often because it is near where we live at.we go to this location often and sometimes just to sit and have a beverage or do some small shopping while we're meeting some nice people and the wonderful employees that work at this location.I say the employees are wonderful because sometimes you get some undesirable people that come in there causing havoc and the employees catch him every time and I love it. I myself witnessing undesirable customer I immediately went and let the manager know and she handled it swiftly.needless to say giant eagle was now my new hangout I'm a 50 year old male and I love being around people level-headed and a well-oiled machine which is giant eagles employees at this location. So here's my story with Giant Eagle on the Southside. This has always been the main Giant Eagle that we shopped at when I was younger, back in those days where I didn't have a license. Back in the day I hated it. Absolutely hated it. The parking lot was dangerous with drivers not looking out for pedestrians . The atmosphere inside wasn't inviting and it felt like a complete chore to go shopping. But today as I stopped in (I've been away for some time) I see that they have made some major changes. The first are the prices...lol you thought I was going to talk about the layout, the additions, nope...let's start with the prices. I'm currently in the Northern VA/DC area. These prices at this Giant Eagle are more expensive than the ones in DC. I kid you not. For example, the salad bar is $7.99/lb. Are you serious? For salad? I would expect to pay that in DC, not here. Getting back to the layout, like another yelper indicated, the pharmacy has moved over by Citizens Bank instead of being very close to the entrance. I suppose that space is better, giving them control of long lines (if that still happens). They now have a larger hot foods section with a cafe...and I believe they sell alcohol at this location (see my review of the Giant Eagle Marketplace in Shadyside...I'm sure they all run them the same way). And I feel like I need to address some that had issues with the clientele at that location. Honestly I feel like the yelper that addressed this previously was being over dramatic. I've had some run ins with people who think the grocery store is a playground and let their kids run wild. But I've seen the same thing at Walmart. If there is a huge problem, request to speak to the manager. Or you have your choice to drive to another store. Aldi's is right down the street. read more

This is the worst giant eagle ever. I stop there occasionally because am usually in the neighborhood. I have never waited less than 10 minutes in a checkout line... usually much longer. Very few lines with checkers are available, even if the lines wind down the aisles. The checkers are very slow, unpleasant, and don't seem awfully bright. The food is pricey, meat and produce quality poor for the price. And do not! I repeat do not! Use the restroom. Example: last year I asked for 1/3 of a pound of shrimp. The woman behind the counter gave me 1/2 pound. When I told her that was too much, that wasn't what I wanted, she yelled at me and said that three was bigger than two....Did I want more. read more

If this Giant Eagle were not two blocks from my house, I would never step foot in it. However, after working 12 hour days, it is a convenient location for me. I hate going to this Giant Eagle because it's dirty and the fresh food is often not fresh. I eat a lot of salad, and I really have to search for lettuce that isn't gross. The parking lot and store is also gross, you have to watch where you're walking to make sure you don't step on a diaper or old food. I had an especially horrible experience when I went yesterday. I needed to do a large grocery trip after the holidays, so I couldn't go in the self-checkouts like I normally do. There were three lanes open, along with the self-checkout lanes, and every single lane was so long that people were waiting in the aisles. I waited in the checkout lane for 35 minutes. That was absolutely ridiculous, especially when there were three other lanes that weren't open! It's disappointing that GE prices are so high, and this establishment is so horrible. The giant eagle on the south side is ok. The cashiers in general are rude with very poor attitudes. They act as though the customers are bothering them and that they are doing the customers a favor by waiting on them when they are employed in a customer relations job. Management should select employees with better social skills in public relations and professionalism or invest in employment training in these areas then reward appropiate behavior. The merchandise is okay though I prefer the market district giant eagles where the merchandise is fresher and more professionally organized and displayed. Market district stores are also cleaner. I do appreciate the diversity and community feel of the southside giant eagle and the red box is convenient. read more

I live five blocks from this store and I usually will drive the five miles out of my way to go to the one at the waterfront. This place is small, but that isn't the issue. It's two stars based purely on shopping experience. This location has a bus stop at the edge of it's parking lot and it seems to attract a certain type of clientele. Loud and obnoxious, completely uncontrolled children. The majority of the cashiers are miserable unless they are yelling across registers to each other about their personal lives or when they are taking their next break.. I've been yelled at by the jitney drivers that occupy the side of the lot for taking "their" parking spaces. The summertime "freegans" or traveler kids like to hang out over by the redbox and I've seen at least a couple of them making that corner their personal toilet. Panhandlers ask for cigarettes as you walk in the door. Giant Eagle does not seem to care who camps out on their property, and this is the main flaw at this location. Ghetto Bird indeed. read more
