This location of Giannone Wine and Liquor is very nice; it is clean, spacious, and reasonably priced (not cheap by any means, but not crazy expensive either). Their wine selection is vast and easy to navigate, while the alcohol options are more limited but include some unusual bottles. Lastly, they have a decent amount of beers, though their bottles are more interesting than their can options. I do love that they allow customers to build their own six-pack from loose bottles/cans, so you can avoid committing to a new brew in bulk. The store is worth at least a browse. read more

I've never left a bad review to any location anywhere. I've never been more appalled at the service my family and I received here on 6/16. We stepped in, looking for a specific bottle of Spanish wine that we use to cook with but only knew the name in Spanish. A woman walked over to us, asking what kind of wine we were looking for. She first asked my mother, who speaks English as a second language, and brusquely walked past her once she paused for a moment to explain the wine we were looking for, loudly asking "what kind of wine are you looking for." She did the same to my father, who also, surprised by the attendents abruptness paused, and stuttered over the name of the wine, not sure of the exact name of the wine. She placed her hands on her hip, and answers with the most condescending tone, "I've been a wine consultant for 34 years and I've never heard of it. Quickly adding "is it Tempranillo, granache", tapping her foot impatiently. We didn't know and she continued to list her credentials. We didn't know how to respond ld and were going to browse the shelves to find something else but her rudeness, and brusqueness shocked us so much, we didn't know what to do, and walked out. We looked at each other wondering if she was so rude because it was late, or because we were Latino. Hard to say, but impossible to forget such an odd and horrible experience. read more

I like the location of this store near the waterfront. This store really has the best selection in the area as a high-end expense. The store is very clean. I enjoyed touring this store. I thought the staff were helpful at locating certain bottles for gifts. I recommend in-person shopping rather than the delivery service. read more

I happen to live close by and love this place. If they don't have something, they will try their best to get it for you. One day over the summer, they were out of Campari. I needed some for a party and started combing the other liquor stores, including Sparrows. The price was $10 more! The little bodega type places along Washington St. also were charging $10 more. I love this place for their well priced beer selection, as well as a decent number of moderately priced European wines and a respectable array of liquor. When I've asked for deliveries, they are always on time and very polite. Customer service is quite good and the rude lady mentioned below is now gone, thankfully. So, for you 1-star Hobokeners, you might want to give them another shot. read more

It is so rare that I go out of my way to leave a negative review. However, I just left the store and the customer service from the owner/manager, was even less than subpar. Not only could he not verbally respond to my question as to whether or not they had a specific wine-- other than to waive his finger "no" in my face because he was on speakerphone with a loud personal call. Then when he rang me up, he didn't say a single word to me. He put the bottles in a bag and turned around walked away and continued his exceptionally loud personal call on speakerphone. This is one of the best liquor stores I've seen , I was there back in February looking for a limited edition of Baileys and the were nice enough to hold 2 bottles for me , at that time I was told if I ever needed any liquor and couldn't find it in other stores I could come and ask them , well I did just that this past Tuesday when I found a Blue Proseco wine on Facebook .. I called so many stores and asked about if it was possible to order and no one even looked into it ... UNTIL I walked into Giannone in Hoboken and spoke to John , not only he gave me the best costumer service but he did his very best to find my item that until than seemed impossible to get, I left the store and left my Info with him about 20 minutes later I got a message saying he ordered the item for me and it would be ready for pick up sometime this week .. today I got another message saying it's at the store ready to pick up !!! This place just opened recently (maybe a month or two ago?), and it's a nice addition to town, with a good selection of wine and spirits, a great selection of beers by the bottle, some hard-to-find items, and very fair pricing for things on sale. It's a shame I walked here today, because that limited what I could carry away with me. Had I driven, I would have scooped up some beers I've been having trouble finding elsewhere in town: Goose Island from Chicago, and Cristal from Argentina, just to name a few. They have a big, big selection, and it's great they offer so many by the single bottle. The choices have some overlap with the Sparrow uptown, but also quite a bit of divergence, so if you can't find what you're looking for there, come here. The selection of spirits is probably not quite as broad as Sparrow's (I think this is a somewhat smaller store), but again, they have some things that Sparrow doesn't carry, like Flor de Cana aged rum, and Bitter Truth bitters and liqueurs. If you're a fan of certain types of cocktails, you've probably spent time hunting these things down, and now you know where to find them. Regular, non-sale prices are normal for Hoboken (read: a bit higher than you might find elsewhere, but that's to be expected given the location / rents). Sale prices, on the other hand, seem like real bargains: today I picked up a bottle of pinot noir for $20 that was about 1/3rd off the regular price of $29. I've had this particular bottle before, and know that the $20 is a better deal that I've gotten anywhere else. Browsing the aisles today, it seemed like there were quite a few things on sale, and they also give discounts on wine (10% off a half-case of 6 bottles, 20% off a full case). One thing they don't have yet that would be helpful: wine tasting notes and scores from Wine Spectator, Robert Parker, etc. Many other stores offer these, and they're useful when choosing a new wine you haven't had before. read more

Visited this Giannone location last night for a private wine tasting that was the result of a fundraiser. It is obviously just like the Giannone in West New York. They have the broadest selection of wine and beer in the area. The staff at this location are really helpful, knowledgeable, and very friendly. The tasting last night were some Portuguese wines, and Giannone offered a great discount that we took advantage of. An added plus was getting to talk to Felix (one of the proprietors). I stopped in here on a whim before going out to eat, when my friend and I decided to dine somewhere that was BYOB. While I'm usually keen on trying new things, I'm fairly sensitive to alcohol, and certain types of wine really bother me. With that being said, when I walked into Giannone, I was fully prepared to head to the refrigerated section and pick out one of my "safe" bottles of wine. Boring. The cashier - who actually turned out to be part of the Giannone family - asked if I needed any help. Instead of saying the usual, "No, I'm fine," I decided to take his offer. I explained that I wanted a red wine, not too dry, on the sweeter side but also cheap, etc etc. Without hesitation, he led me to the South American aisle and selected one of his favorites. I was expecting to see a price tag I wouldn't like, but it was $13 - what a steal. At the register, he convinced me to sign up for their Rewards program, which took all of two seconds, and cut the price down to around $10 - an even better steal. The wine was delicious and exactly what I was looking for. The store itself has an incredible selection, and I'm glad to know there are friendly people to help me navigate the world of wines. I'm giving four stars because I've only been here once - I surely hope I get the same exceptional service the next time I stop by. read more

Not only does Giannone's sell Georgian wine (I pretty much only drink Georgian wine), but they have a few different kinds. To my knowledge only two shops in hoboken sell Georgian wine. As long as they continue to stock Georgian wine, I will not shop for wine elsewhere. read more

This place is selling to a captive customer base - they're next door to the W Hotel, are surrounded apartment buildings, and are the closest liquor store for a few blocks, so they can get a way with raising their prices a bit without losing customers. They intentionally raise the prices on lots of popular wines and beers to get you to join their frequent customer club, and then put said product on sale only when you use your card. Not a fan of this practice. In addition to that, I'm pretty sure they're strategy for their beer is "buy whatever is on sale" from the distributor. Their beer selection is SO INCONSISTENT. Giannone has a decent / small selection of high end wine, however they have the most rude and abrasive sales women I have ever encountered. I had known this prior to my last visit, however she exceed all expectations. After letting her know we didn't need any help and preferred to browse, she verbally accosted my wife and I, lecturing us on how no one browses wine stores. I have never experienced this sort of nonsense in my life. While I had a few wines I wanted to buy, my wife and I were so offended by her that we couldn't stomach spending a dime here. Sparrow is a much better option for serious buyers or for anyone who cares to be treated with respect. read more

They have a decent selection, I'm just not a fan of the pricing scheme. They will show a bottle of wine for a decent price, I bring it to the register then I'm told that I have to be a member to get the good price. When I asked what the membership benefits were (since I know it's illegal to get "points" in NJ for buying liquor) I was told so they could keep track of what I buy. Uhm, maybe I don't want someone keeping track of the booze I buy! Since I prefer to not be stalked or pay a higher price, I put my wine back and went to Sparrow. No tricks there. read more

This is the first time ever writing a review, but I was treated so badly at this liquor store I had to say something. I live across the street from this place and was in a hurry to buy some wine to take to my friends. I see a bottle with Sale above it saying $10 and change. I bring it up to the register and it rings up $16 something. I asked the cashier and she says the $10 is only for members, and would only take a few minutes to sign up. I said no thanks and put the bottle back. No one came to help me for a selection. And as I was putting the bottle back I said to the men talking to one another in the back of the store, not being helpful, that it wasn't right to put sale price if that wasn't the case. Very obnoxiously he said I didn't read the fine print and it was my fault. As I was walking away, I think he was still speaking to me in a nasty tone, and possibly cursed. I'm in a service business myself, if spoke to customers that way I surely wouldn't be around long. I should just have taken my time and gone to Sparrow Wine like I always do. This place has a good size selection, which is why I'm giving it two stars. The main reason I cannot give even an average review is because of the price gouging. For a limited release Goose Island Bourbon County beer, which suggested retail is $9.99 and other places within a few blocks sell for $11.99, Giannone sells for an absurd $29.99 per bottle.
