So..... "We're gonna grab steamies. How many do you want"? yells out a couple of Canadian poker buds. "IDK several or a dozen" I yell back from the restroom of the hotel room thinking I heard 'wennies' as in small sausages. 30 minutes later, uncontrolled laughter as they hand me a huge bag. "Here's your dozen". * * * * * * A Montreal institution that for 94 years has focused on one thing, steamies. Take a Shopsy's slender seven incher, warm it and stick it in a smaller than the States side ball park bun, slather it with whatever, maybe top it with a heaping pile of vinegary coleslaw and there you have it. The hotdog, not natural (nitrates and phosphates). No one said this was health food. Here's the thing, meaning no disrespect to those who grew up with these doggies but they are just hotdogs. Love the addition of the slaw but still just hotdogs. Inexpensive. $2.50 - $3.50 each. Great counter service. Nuff said.

However, we tried paying for a drink, but realized we ended up paying way more when we looked at the menu. Mind you, when we sat down the lady who charged us more was STARING at us the whole time making us very uncomfortable. Then when eating, my friend bought a hot dog from the place but was also eating something out of her thermos, the waiter came up to us and very rudely asked her to put it away. My friend took a moment to process the information and the waiter called her arrogant so we ended up leaving. Very bad atmosphere.

The service is really good as well, they were freindly and explained everything that I had questions for. The inside of the resto is small with a nice ambiance. The…read morefood is delicious, the chicken is crispy and well cooked, the staff is competent, and it's overall affordable. But unfortunately, the hype itself (and covid) is somewhat ruining the experience. I was alone and ordered ONE sandwich with a side of fries, and it took over forty minutes to receive my order. Thankfully there was no line, but waiting forty full minutes for a single sandwich and fries is kind of unbelievable even for such a popular place. Then again, I understand that maybe they are short staffed or can't keep up with the increasing demand due to their popularity on social media, but it's unfortunate since I received my food lukewarm and not as fresh as I'd wished. TL;DR - If you're okay with waiting a while to get your food, go ahead and try out Tasty MTL. You won't be disappointed!

We did not have any issues finding parking when we went, but since there is no designated lot, depending on time of day or event going on around the area, it might get crowded. Restaurant was pretty empty both times we went, we were served quickly and accurately. I've tried Five Guys on the West Island and the experience has been just as good. This location is newer, not very big but still a decent amount of tables and room to eat. I love the huge windows and layout - it makes a big difference with the amount of natural sunlight coming through. Another feature I love at this location is the washroom area. There are 3 individual restrooms for total privacy and comfort, and a communal sink area on the outside. This means that you can wash your hands without entering the actual bathroom if you quickly need to rinse before or after you eat. You can also see customers as they come out of the restroom and observe if they wash their hands or not since this is out in the open. Food quality is consistent both times I went and on par with other locations. Burgers are flavorful and made to order - fries are generous. Just the poutine could be better, they serve it to you in a closed plastic container and the curds were all melted, to the point of being stretchy - I suspect they do not use fresh curds as this would not happen with fresher cheese, it should remain intact and squeeky. If you're looking for large decadent burgers and customizable options - this is the place to go. Free peanuts are also a nice touch.

It finally happened and the experience ended up being rather disappointing. Chez Gerard feels like yet another generic Belle Province experience with a higher price tag attached to it. I've rarely eaten a mediocre chicken burger in my life regardless where I go... but Chez Gerard somewhat managed that. The steamies was the best part of my meal and let's be honest here... when the steamies is the best part you eat somewhere for lunch.... something felt short somewhere. No thanks, huge MEH for me.
