I was in Montreal for a day to walk 100,000 steps, and 1 of the 4 food requirements I had for…read moremyself was poutine. I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

There were costs for meals from $10 upward and soft drinks and a wine, beer and cocktail menu from $2.50. The staff cleared up any unfortunate circumstances quickly and willingly sure that the customer should be pleased. My fries came cold and were burnt, no problem, here's a fresh plate of warm fries ready to enjoy. A small mistake, when a two patty burger only gave one patty, no worries, here's a second patty fresh and hot. Want to order another platter to bring home to your husband at the end of the meal, easy. The menus change at different mealtimes--so customer beware, but have a good time, all of the time! Everyone should come to Poutine Ville!

The delicious fries, gravy and generous toppings are always a sure pleaser. I heard about the new poutine of the world collection which is for now, exclusive at this Cote Des Neiges location and can say the flavors and ideas are genius! Looking at the new menu and seing the different countries and corresponding flags just sets the idea and makes it so much easier to understand what you are getting. There are so many choices and unique flavor combinations, this will be a real crowd pleaser so I cannot wait until all locations can take advantage of these new offerings. We opted for the Greek and Canadian poutines. The Greek is described as a mix of their smashed fries, gravy, curds, generous amount of feta, green onions and lemon sauce. Unfortunately, it was served with the incorrect type of potatoes the first time around and then we were told there were no more onions. The Canadian poutine on the other hand, came out perfectly, it's your traditional fries and gravy but topped off with bacon bits, creamy white macaroni and cheese and sweet syrup maple/honey type sauce. This combination was amazing and by far one of the top poutines I've ever had. The mix of salty, creamy and sweet with different textures like soft and crunchy was so satisfying. I hope these poutines of the world become a permanent menu item and can be offered in different sizes. I will definately come back for more. Although we had a few bumps with the service and our orders at this location, I want to point out that I communicated with the owner through the Poutineville Facebook page as he was answering my messages and truly, Kosta is an all-star and true "boss" in every sense of the word. He is quick to respond and accomodate and will follow up with any of his restaurants to ensure things are handled properly. Just to give an example, I messaged the FB page while I was dining in the restaurant and within a few moments, I heard the phone ring and it was the owner, ensuring we were being served correctly. All this was happening while the owner was out of the country yet he took time out of his vacation to make sure we were OK. That alone is probably the best service I have ever received so I applaud Poutineville's management style and customer oriented values. Come here for the food and stay a life long customer because the people who run this place CARE.

The app was pointing to this nearby place and little did I know it's sort of like a Quebecois A&W that keeps late hours. It appears that this is a newer store to replace an older one. There is an outdoor terrace, a spacious ordering area, and a very nice dining room for this genre, complete with a crazy inscription (to an American) on the wall saying "Salut, mes p'tites frites." What? "Greetings, my little fries?" There was a fair bit of selection on Lafleur's menu. However, I wasn't looking for a hamburger. I settled on a chicken sandwich combination, but upgraded the fries to onion rings, perhaps as an excuse to say "rondelles d'oignon." Realistically, it's because I eat them so infrequently and wasn't expecting to converse with anyone. Everything tasted fairly good. I received good counter service at Lafleur. The personnel could tell I was not from the area nor familiar with their offerings. What is it with fast food and coffeehouse service in suburban areas of Quebec? It's reliably polite and up to the task! There can be marginal service at enough fast food places in the States, especially if a grittier locale. The prices were fine after being converted to U.S. currency, but the hefty sales taxes push it up. The Canadian government doesn't discriminate and even corrals us foreigners into paying for their national health care system through sales taxes. If transiting on fast and wide Cote-de-Liesse or wanting to get a bite outside the airport property, Lafleur ought to work. It won't be a haven for vegetarians and vegans, though. I think that, for fast food, eating one's food on the outdoor terrace and watching the traffic whizz by on a temperate day might actually be enjoyable.
