We asked for their $895 special but they strongly suggested we go with their $1495 much nicer casket because it would make a more pleasant experience for the viewing. WHAT?! Nothing about viewing my father after he passed away was pleasant! We were all heartbroken and didn't give two hoots about the box he would be cremated in. We wanted to see HIM, not the damn box. After long negotiations, we finally gave in because we were all tired and wanted to go home. These people are trained to be criminals and soak you for whatever they can get from you at a very difficult time in your life. And don't get me started on their pre-arranging people. They work on commission and will try and sell you a $15,000 Funeral plus burial. By the time you are done, you have spent your life savings on your funeral. Check out the Marketplace piece they did on Arbor Memorial for more truths about how crooked this company is. If they don't make their monthly quota, somebody is in hot water, and nobody gets their bonuses at the end of the year!

I instantly received an ornate certificate in the name for whom it was meant. When I let the family of the deceased know they said that this was not their suggestion at all. When I contacted the website Chat to find out who, where and when would be in charge of planting the tree, the customer service representative would not know any of that, not even in which country it was supposed to be planted (initially suggesting it might happen in the US). When I called the Ridley Funeral Home the person answering would not know where the order for $50+ went. She was even surprised by my asking. In Ontario charging for a service that nobody knows about amounts to misleading advertising and as such is in contravention of normal business practices and illegal, with legal consequences.

I don't have a lot of funeral planning experience (thankfully) but my sense is that it is impossible to walk away not feeling nickel-and-dimed. They have a detailed price list, so I don't feel like there was price inflation and there was no haggling but there is a charge for everything single thing they can think of to charge for and it adds up quickly. Our funeral director met with us for about 45 minutes and he seemed a little nervous, so I'm thinking he was new. He had to duck out several times to get samples of things (e.g. urns) that I felt like he could have had ready to go in the meeting room. But he got things done and we walked away with our questions answered. The funeral director at the funeral was lovely and I think she was tearing up a bit. Kind of nice that she wasn't the stereotypical, stoic, seen-this-a-million-times personality one might expect. I like that they are independently owned and not part of a chain or conglomerate. If you're going to shell out all that money under duress and with no other option at least it's staying local.

They accommodated all of our unique requests and were very competitively priced compared to another Toronto outfit we checked. We did not feel "nickled and dimed" here. Bill, our go-to guy was a star -completely on top of everything in terms of arrangements, and although he couldn't be there the day of the funeral, the other staff were amazing too. I cannot find one fault or criticism in any way; incredibly, everything went off without a hitch -which is what drove me to write this review.
