2025 Update: 5 years later and we finally saved up enough money to put up the last wall on our property, replacing the last old/worn out fence. So of course we called George again without question! Everything from my 2020 review still holds true, so I won't make this much longer. If you need any masonry or concrete work, GFA is the company to go with hands down! 2020 Review: We had a very old wooden fence in our backyard that was practically falling over and after discussing it with our neighbor we decided that it was time to upgrade to a block wall. After all the usual due diligence searching for a contractor, we decided to go with G.F.A. Masonry. Best decision ever! Not only is George a really nice guy, but he and his crew were very professional. They were on time every morning , kept the job site clean (which is nice because it was my yard), they even asked if it would be ok to play music (which they kept at a normal volume so it didn't bother my other neighbors). George said it would take 2-3 days to finish the wall, good to his word it was done in 2 and when they finished they cleaned everything up like they had never been here, even put up a temp fence to keep my dogs in the yard while we wait for the guy to come install our gate. We are very happy with our new wall, as is our neighbor. Looks great, and we'll never have to do maintenance on a wooden fence again. George was awesome, he came to my house because of some concerns I had with moister and cracks in a backyard retaining wall. Upon inspection he told me that there isn't a concern and ensured the integrity of the wall is still intact. He went on to explain things in detail and recommended something that I could spray on the wall to help protect against any future erosion. After obtaining 4 bids from various fence and masonry companies. We decided to go with GFA Masonry and concrete. George is the owner and came over to inspect the Job, out of my 4 bids George came in middle of the pack for price range not the most expensive but not the cheapest, what set him apart was his detailed proposal and he came across very professional and friendly. His competitors were only sending bids through txt message no personal interaction. He even offered to fix an irrigation line for my sprinklers that was in the way,he offered to reroute the pvc pipe under the existing concrete slab and future block wall. So we shook hands and he sent me his proposal that same night. We spoke the next day after a talk w/ the next door neighbor ( going half on this shared block wall ) we decided to move forward with George. George was able to start the next week we were quoted 4 days for 70ft long x 6ft high sand color T & G block wall w/ sand caps. Day 1 was demo of old wooden fence and trenches dug out for footing. Days 2-4 was completion of wall. His crew showed up on time everyday 7 am sharp and was usually here until 4pm except for the last day the we're done early by 2pm. We are happy with our wall, this looks much better than our previous wooden fence that was weather beaten and falling over due to AV wind. A year later, we decided to move on to Phase 2 of our outdoor project with driveway and patio extensions and a short wall along our front property lines. So impressed with GFA Masonry's previous work, we asked for a quote and George and his crew did not disappoint! They started on time every day and did not leave until the job was done. We threw him a curveball when we requested a change to the original plan and he gladly accommodated us. My wife and I recently purchased and brand new custom built home, but a new build means no yards or fences. We decided our first step would be a 4' foot courtyard type block wall. Not knowing anybody in masonry I dropped by our local masonry supply (Resource Building) and ask them for some references and they gave my several business cards but the very top card was GFA Masonry & Concrete, she tapped the top card and said start with George he's one of the best. So I did start with George, and with in a few days we had a plan drawn up, color block samples and an estimate, and it was very reasonable. George is very professional, knowledgeable, and communicative. I shopped around and got a couple of quotes to concrete the side of our house. He was the only one who provided an official written estimate that broke down the costs. Also, he followed up with a phone call to make sure I received the quote and asked if I had any questions. We were concerned about the grading at the side of our house since it was done incorrectly before and floods our house when it rains hard. There were several pieces of large debris that remained in my yard. The team also placed a majority of the non-yard waste material into the yard waste bin, which was problematic for our trash service. Overall, George and his team did a great job with our project. UNPROFESSIONAL.... ARROGANT. DO NOT USE!!! The owner, George, starts off as friendly and then turns into a complete nightmare. While he was on our job, he spent a good amount of time bad mouthing other customers to his crew about things they complained about. Up front he says you can ask questions, then when you do, he blows you off. We watched on our security cameras afterwards, that when we talked to him on the phone, he took the phone from his ear and was not listening. While working, they blew a fuse at our house. He called me at work and asked if he could break the lock on my panel to turn the power back on. He specifically gave details of what HE would do and advised he would take a picture and send it to me to show what they broke. Never received the picture and come to find out, HE was not even at my property. Someone else broke the lock, which is not what he advised. The day his crew poured the concrete, they advised they would show up at 7:00 a.m. to pour before it rained that afternoon and said he would go through one side of the yard thus we didn't have to move our cars. He showed up at 6:00 a.m. but then proceeded to say that we had to move our cars NOW that the concrete truck was coming. I asked for at least 15 minutes (as I needed to put contacts in, in order to see to move my car) and was told NO. I asked a question that day and he physically waved me off and walked away from me. The finisher was standing there as well and he had a stunned expression on his face of what just transpired. The finisher ended up assisting me. There were two stains on my concrete that I asked to be fixed. I explained to the general contractor that the edges of the concrete became brown from the heavy rains we had after the concrete was poured and the water in the backyard had flooded. I showed the GC pictures of the flooding and advised to not even worry about the edges as it was not a concern. George came with another person and proceed to speak ill of me while on my property (knowing we were home) saying, "I have no clue what she did to the concrete to damage it" while pointing to the edges. He proceeded to fix the two stains by applying FOUR rounds of muriatic acid midday in high temps. I have added pictures to this review to show what my concrete now looks like....stained from the acid. Of course after that, he disappeared. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. Also, if you hire a GC who is going to sub out the concrete work, make sure it is NOT this company that they are hiring as the sub. The way George treated us was horrible and beyond unprofessional. My husband became infuriated when he played back the security videos seeing how George treated me...physically raising his hand and waving me off when I asked a question. GFA Masonry took on the job of building us 3 retaining walls for a Hill, a Vegetable Garden and Storage area with Steps plus, a Concrete patio and Walk way. After talking with the owner George I learned that he has been in the Masonry business his entire life and that it is a family owned business. Anytime we had a question or wanted to learn about the process he responded quickly, he knows is stuff. We knew what we wanted for the most part but he helped fill in the spots we weren't too sure about, and it came out beautifully! I was truly impressed with everyone at GFA and their work ethic was outstanding. They came to work on time if not early, and cleaned up before the end of their work day every time. I would also add that we loved the fact he was about providing a Quality product and didn't rush the job just to get it done and to be paid. He and his men started work at the beginning of January clearing and prepping the area. Unfortunately, rain is the only thing that slowed the project down and eventually put things on hold for a time. But when they did work it went quickly. Our retaining walls were up within a 2 day period. But, with all the rain we just waited patiently because we wanted it done right, not fast. George kept touching base with us throughout the entire job even on the rainy days just to make sure we knew he hadn't forgotten us. They did however work on things, in between the rains, that could be done even when the ground was wet. Like cutting the railroad ties for the steps or installing the garden lights. Finally the rains subsided and the concrete patio and walk ways were the last to go in and it was well worth the wait! All of it came out looking outstanding! When we have more Masonry work that needs to be done in the future I will be using GFA again. I also wanted to share that we learned a lot from this experience and trying to find the right business to do the job. We had contacted 5 different businesses to get quotes. Out of the five only 2 put any effort in trying to get our business. Two others showed up but never followed through on a quote or even showed interest in doing the job. One sent a text 2 weeks to late. So out of the 2 that gave us quotes and had taken the time to talk with us on what we wanted, it was clear we were going to go with GFA for the retaining walls and concrete work. The other business was an all in one landscaping business that would also do our patio covering, irrigation system, grass and landscape our hill. But, they also would charge us an astronomical price to do it (the cost was about 30% of what our house is worth! It should only about 10% or less for landscaping) When we got the quote with George it was a no brainer because it was within the budget we thought the Masonry would actually cost. So we decided to go with different businesses for each part of what we want to do with the backyard and it has so far kept us within a realistic budget.
