I just read the one-star review posted from last December, and find it hard to believe that we are talking about the same person, as our experience with Suzelle was the complete opposite. My suspicion is that the issue was largely on the side of her guests and their attitudes.
She was very responsive from the beginning to end, and did a great job at really digging into our areas of interest/priorities and delivered a day fully customized to our specific and niche wants. Beyond just wine tasting, we were also very interested in finding backroad photography opportunities and she delivered the perfect balance of both. She took us to some amazing vantage points that we never would have discovered on our own. She was also extremely patient with allowing us all the time we needed to get all of the photos that we wanted, and we are a group that goes overboard here.
She also easily adjusted to requests made on the fly, day-of. And instead of shortening our time spent elsewhere to accommodate them, she was willing to spend longer with us to get everything in so that no experience was compromised. In fact, she also presented us with additional options along the way back that she thought might enhance our day even if it meant that more time devoted to our experience beyond her commitment.
We gave her a long list of food allergies to work around for lunch, which were not very compatible with the food of the region and she knew the restaurants that could accommodate our high maintenance needs and had great recommendations of what to choose from our available options. She was very diligent in making sure the wait staff knew exactly what ingredients had to be avoided. Food is one of her passions, and we benefited from it that day, and later on our own in selecting meals elsewhere.
While we had asked that our itinerary not be built around learning the history of the region as that's not how we wanted to spend our time, we did want to learn as much as possible during the drives in between places, and found her to be very knowledgable about the area and had fascinating tidbits to share, often proactively and often in response to specific questions. We didn't ask her anything that she didn't have something interesting to share. I have a poor attention span and she managed to hold it, which is rare for tour guides to be able to do, to say the least.
It is common and to be expected that a tour guide will take you to wineries that they know well and are connected to. I have yet to experience otherwise, at least. But the two wineries that she took us too were great, both in terms of the wines we tasted and the white-glove treatment we were given by the Sommeliers. It was clear that she could have run the tastings by herself being just as thorough and knowledgable as they were about the wines and the history of the region, but they worked in tandem to make sure we got the most of the time spent at each and felt special. While we knew going in from other sources that it was the expectation that you buy wine, there was no pressure applied or felt to do so at all, let alone to buy at a certain volume. Though I'm sure that was also a matter of trust. :)
We found her personally easy to engage with as well, and enjoyed learning about her own personal history and experience living in the region.
Overall, I had been in charge of finding a tour guide for the day, and ended up looking really good in the eyes of my friends. Both said she and the day far exceeded their expectations, and I have their full trust to take charge of this again for future trips together. :)
