I love historic churches and a Catholic church has sat on this site since 1896, making it Miami's oldest Catholic church. Catholic history in Miami goes back much further than that however to 1567 when Jesuit missionaries came to the Spanish settlement founded by Don Pedro Menendez de Avila at the mouth of the Miami River. A Jesuit priest wrote the first letter in Miami in 1568 describing the Tequesta Native Americans and complaining about the mosquitoes. The Wagner Family were the first Catholic family to settle at the mouth of the Miami River in 1850. In 1891 another Catholic family asked Henry M. Flagler, oil and railroad tycoon for land for a Catholic church which he donated even though he was a Presbyterian. A wood frame church was constructed in 1896 on the site but the church quickly out grew it. In 1922 it was replaced with the Gesu church and rectory that sits here today. Gesu Catholic School was built in 1926 but demolished in the 1980's. Gesu is the Italian word for Jesus. The ornate Mediterranean-style building was designed by Owen Williams. The Gesu Catholic Church has seen a lot of history through it's years. In the 1930's they provided services for African-Americans during segregation. In the 1940's they welcomed home and ministered to the soldiers returning from WWII. In the 1950's the church assisted Hispanic people immigrating to the United States. In the 1960's, the church became the home of the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School after they were expelled from Cuba by Fidel Castro. Mother Teresa visited when she was given a key to the City of Miami in 1974. On July 18, 1974, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic. Today the church continues to offer service. It is a popular wedding venue for Catholics in Miami.

This church houses so much history! Gesu Church is home to Miami's oldest Catholic parish, Holy Name. Situated at the corner of NE 1st Avenue & NE 2nd Street in downtown Miami, the Mediterranean Revival building was designed by Orin T. Williams and completed in 1925. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It's so beautifully preserved and holds mass in both English and Spanish. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because their website was a little hard to navigate, so even though we wanted to attend a Spanish mass, we ended up showing up for an English one.

Beautiful church. The parishioners made me feel welcome and the service gave glory to the Lord.

There was no entrance fee for the festival, but on Saturday night, they had a band performing and there was a $10 cover per person to go in the seated area. We didn't know this until the end of the food line after we paid - we went to go in the ballroom but were told we needed a ticket by someone outside the room. It wasn't really clear that there was any seating available other than in the room with the band, so we did pay the cover since we got so much food and needed to sit, not sure exactly what the entertainment was. The band was fantastic and lively, so we didn't necessarily regret it, just still a bit of a steeper price than entrance for any other cultural festival that also comes with live entertainment and just wasn't made clear from the beginning how it worked until we already had our food. Very cool to see the community go up and dance with the band. I love that in Brickell we have such a culturally rich and diverse institution open to the community.

My family and I all feel incredibly fortunate to have found a church that preaches the Gospel using biblical principles and adheres to scripture. It's beautifully diverse! Intently generous to the Miami community as well as worldwide ministries. Pastor Kevin is genuine, humble, and truly full of compassion, integrity, and always willing to be used by the Holy Spirit to encourage others and rebuke when needed. The kids and youth ministry is absolutely amazing. The worship is real and inspiring. No big egos! There are plenty of ways to get involved and serve across multiple ministries. I came to Miami Vineyard for the first time in June, to attend Growth Track. I now serve for both the Connect Team and Guest Experience and I love it. I love welcoming all with a big smile. No matter what you're going through, good or bad, I believe you too will find a home with the Miami Vineyard family. I am also lucky to be a part of a small group for bible study on Wednesday nights. I look forward to attending each week. We're planning an outreach in January to help others in need. All in all, it's a great group! There's always something going on and so much to do. Here is some information regarding this place. Prior to the First Presbyterian Church, the lot at 609 Brickell Avenue was the location of the home for Edna Rickmers. First Presbyterian purchased the lot at 609 Brickell Avenue in 1948. The church was built and opened in 1949. Andre and Edna Rickmers bought the lot at 609 Brickell Avenue from Mary Brickell shortly after arriving in Miami. The couple arrived to Miami in 1905, a year after they got married in Pittsburgh. Edna was from Pittsburgh and her husband was a ship builder from Germany. He was listed as retired in the 1908 Miami City Directory. The couple was listed at 1805 Brickell (later changed to 609 Brickell), as early as 1908. It is likely they built the home in the cover photograph between 1905 and 1907. Andre and Edna were very active in real estate in the growing Miami area. The couple owned a fair amount of property in today's Omni neighborhood. They also owned the land where the Olympia Theater resides. It was actually Edna Rickmers that gave the building the name "Olympia Theater and Office Building" in 1926. However, Andre was not alive to see the building of the Olympia. It isn't clear the year he died, but Edna Rickmers was listed as a widow by the 1918 Miami City Directory. The home at 609 Brickell Avenue was set toward the back of part of the lot. It was very common for homes on the east side of Brickell Avenue to be located closer to the bay and a distance from Brickell Avenue. The home was razed in 1948 to make room for the church. Following the sale of the property to the church, Edna Rickmers moved a few blocks south to a mansion located at 1927 Brickell Avenue. She lived in this mansion until her death in February of 1956
