It's open 24/7 and serves not only bulalo, but also sizzling plate dishes like tuna and beef steak. You know when a business succeeds in a big way and competitors will suddenly sprout like mushrooms in the immediate vicinity? Me and my family have been living in Better Living Subdivision for about four years now, and I've seen a couple of bulalo restaurants fold after trying but failing to grab customers from Sora Bulalo. In one recent visit, there were two sets of foreigners who didn't seem to know each other dining inside Sora's. The waitress told me that a lot of foreigners were regular customers. Locals, too, naturally. Sora's stays open all night and all day because it invites a variety of clients, from guys trying to let the hot bulalo soup work its magic and remove their hangovers, to health nuts who believe that the bone marrow does wondrous things to their bodies. This is probably not true, but don't tell them that. They will insist it is. Me? I just happen to like bulalo, either for lunch or dinner. I can have it with soup or pan fried. Good thing Sora's has both versions.

It's hard to believe that all the home-cooked goodness they offer won't even cost you that much. My top picks from this place are: kare-kare, crispy pata and pancit malabon. Everything tastes like it was cooked with so much love and care. The only downside, food takes a while to get served whether you are dining in or taking the food to go. But really, quality food takes time so best to set your expectations. You can call ahead to order and pick up. They also deliver to nearby areas but will only take orders for delivery until 7pm and it will take more than an hour for your food to arrive so plan ahead.

I ask you, how would you translate its name, Big Brother's Eggs? Anyway, as its name suggests, Itlog ni Kuya's specialty is eggs, eggs and more eggs. It has very affordable "silog" meals like the classic tapsilog for P50. That's tapa, sinangag and itlog. If you don't care for tapa, there's also hotdog, tocino, longganisa and bangus to go with the fried rice and fried egg. For those with a very tight budget, a humble repast of kalog for only P25. That's short for kape and itlog, of course. That's coffee and egg for those who don't understand Tagalog. Their meal with the most borderline obscene name is pakaplog, which stands for pan de sal, kape and itlog which goes for P35. Pakaplog translates vaguely to "May I fondle you?" and you can see why a lot of folks aren't too happy when their kids see the item on the menu. A favourite among a lot of Filipinos is red egg, or itlog na maalat, and Itlog ni Kuya has this specialty, too. They also have balut as well as penoy, so those who crave the unhatched duck eggs can have their fix anytime of day, courtesy of Kuya. Since itlog na maalat, balut and penoy all come from ducks, the place recently included its Filipino version of Peking duck, calling theirs Pekin Kinulob. I'm not sure if I want to try this out, but the various silog meals are regular treats that I can go for anytime.

Which are always a GOOD thing unless you're weird) and can serve two for about Php 180. For this dish to be vegan, you'd have to give them specific instructions, which are to remove the worcestershire sauce or oyster sauce and replace it with soy sauce, no mayo, no butter, and no chicken powder. Whew. I also find it funny how local TV is projected on a huge white projector screen in one corner of the restaurant, and being a family restaurant, I guess they're trying to recreate a typical dinner at home with TV Patrol or a teleserye on.

Classics such as Kare-kare, Crispy Pata and Corned Beef Sinigang are always popular but I highly recommend their Bicol Express. While most Filipino cooks would make this edgy dish with string beans, chili and coconut milk, Seig's adds a special twist to an old favorite with the use of sigarilyas and by topping it with a hefty portion of fried liempo (very crispy, and almost with a lechon kawali quality). The dish is savory but not too spicy. This is by far the best Bicol Express I've had - my mother is from the region, so I've had plenty. They also have a sampling of other western dishes such as their chicken roll or barbecued ribs, as well as a nice selection of pasta. For those who want to go for appetizers, you have over 20 items to choose from, including the surprising Tofu Sisig. Here, they use two kinds of mushrooms, soy and chili and silky tofu cut into squares and lightly breaded. It's actually good enough to be an entrée and eaten with a bowl of rice. Whatever dish you choose, Seig's is sure to deliver high quality dishes with an unforgettable taste. If you're still not full after the large portion servings, try the Frozen Brazo, it's the perfect way to end a good meal.

There, we brought along two of my brothers-in-law for some drinks and some grub. It wasn't much to look at back then. For all intents, it appeared to be a store that became a grocery that began to sell food that evolved into a drinking place that served ice cold beer and a wide variety of pulutan, all of which were damn good. After that first drinking session, we would occasionally buy their cooked food as take out. Dex N Mut became a regular part of our list of places to get food when no one felt like cooking, which was often. A couple of months ago, I noticed that our old favorite had seemingly closed shop. Impossible, I thought. Dex N Mut had too large a clientele to just disappear from the face of the earth, I didn't notice that it had transferred to a bigger place across the street. What a relief that was. These days, not too many people go to the new Dex N Mut because Dona Soledad Extension is being paved. The two way street is one way for a lengthy portion. I'm 100 percent sure that the new Dex N Mut will be back in business as soon as the roadworks are completed. I can't wait.

This is clearly a restaurant for the more adventurous foodies out there, who also enjoy a few bottles of beer to go along with the out of the ordinary dishes. Ocean Blue has been around for a few years, suggesting that it not only has a steady clientele, but also operates in the black. My kumpare who has been there on several occasions vouches for the great food, But of course the tuna is its signature dish.

I've been having my fare of veganized Batac-style empanada whenever I see an empanada store here in Manila. Fariñas Ilocos Empanada is among the more popular and accessible empanada joints. So yes, for a vegan empanada, get the basic one without the egg. You are bound to get strange looks at first, accompanied by "Walang egg? Sure po ba kayo?" but they will eventually comply with your requests once you reassure them that it's possible to have it without the egg. It's oily (you've been warned!), savoury, great with Ilocos vinegar. It hits the spot even without having any animal products (empanadas are known to be stuffed with all sorts of longganisa, cheese, and whatnot). This totally fits into the junk food category but if your eating habits offer a leeway, this is perfect for a quick, tasty merienda paired with some soda.

The Lumpiang Shanghai is great when you have kids at home. They use good quality wrappers that don't fall apart when you try to bite it and stay crispy for a few hours. The lomi also really good, I'd go as far as saying the taste is very similar to what you'd find in those specialty Chinese restaurants in Binondo.

Bicol what it wants to be, whether a regular restaurant or a drinking place. Because it's located so near the Paranaque Doctors Hospital, it should be just a regular restaurant. Yet a year ago, the place unexpectedly announced that live music would be provided at night, either by small bands or solo singers. That little experiment didn't pan out. After a few months, the mini stage in one corner of the restaurant was gone. Joliant's Better Living branch is expected to survive though, not only because it has a captive market in the families and friends of the patients confined at PDH. But there's a better reason. Their food isn't bad, not bad at all. Specializing in Filipino cuisine, Joliant offers affordably priced winners like beef caldereta (P160), kare kare (P180), pork binagoongan (P160), Bicol express (P160) and pinakbet (P120), among others. The place also has rice topping meals with the same dishes at about one-third of the price. Joliant may have wisely abandoned its attempt to be some kind of beer house, but it still serves beer by the bucket (P220 for six bottles of good old San Miguel pale pilsen). Since Pinoys don't drink without lots of pulutan, they have a couple of standards that go down easy. Crispy pata (P420) ihonand spicy garlic chicken (P190) are the most frequently ordered. After the first few times that me and my family ate at Joliant, we now order from them quite frequently. Yes, they deliver via telephone number 801-4427. By the way, they also have pancit bihon, mikibihon and canton in small, medium and large bilaos at P550, P650 and P800, respectively.
