For many years, Huddersfield had a gift and trinket shop called Neaverson's. Selling posh housewares and nick nacks, it was a fixture of Byram Street. Alas, it fell out of fashion and closed down. A pity as its glorious art-deco shop front is one of Huddersfield's more artful sights.
Recently, the building was turned into a tea room - the equally posh looking Gerry's at Neaversons. At a time when Starbucks and Costa are apparently breeding, it was a welcome addition to the town's restaurant and coffee shop provision.
And many people rave about Gerry's. Its tea and cake menu, promise of local, high quality food sources and general ambience are all very attractive in a highly branded, highly conceptual manner.
But Gerry's at Neaversons is also highly variable - with the main problem being that, like its twin Verve, it's all style over substance.
Keeping the old shop frontage and fittings of the iconic Neaverson's store was a great idea - and the thrift shop furniture and tea cups add to the genteel hipster vibe.
However. The service can be poor, the food is expensive and, sometimes, of questionable quality. We have also been overcharged on two separate occasions for items we did not order.
For example, we recently went in for breakfast. I ordered scrambled egg on toast - which is priced around a fiver. Although the cafe was not busy, we waited over thirty minutes for the food to arrive. When it did arrive, my meal was two slices of supermarket bread with, literally, a smear of undercooked egg on the side. There was no more than a couple of teaspoon's full of the off-yellow, suspect looking matter.
What's more, this was served by Gerry himself - who was clearly in a foul mood - dumping the plates in front of us and scowling wordlessly.
I don't mind paying a bit more for a nice ambience - but only if the food is consistently up to scratch. At Gerry's, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.
On another occasion, the waiter got our order wrong. We sent back the item (an extra portion of toast), but after paying and leaving, we realised that we'd been charged for it.
But there's a deeper problem. The place is pretty grubby. It only gets three stars from Kirklees Council for hygiene - but our experience has been more like two. Having tea cups on display around the room may be pretty, but they also gather dust. Every time we've been there, we've had to wipe out our own cups - or face a floating film of filth on our tea...
My partner has enjoyed better luck with food there, which is why we've returned several times. But, personally, I will not eating there again. Every time I have eaten there, I've left feeling ripped off and poorly nourished. read more
