First time here today. Recommend to me by a friend who is a long term customer. I loved everything about the salon from greeting to goodbye. Reception area is relaxing and has an area to get water, wonderful variety of teas, coffee and snacks. The hair washing station is a relaxing recliner chair where you put your feet up. Massage type shampoo and conditioning. Then onto the hair stations that are very nicely decorated and very clean. Oversized floor to ceiling mirrors at each station. I have curly hair and had my hair styled and cut by Erica. She is Ouidad certified. Excellent cut and style. Very pleased with my overall experience. Gerber Salon is extremely unprofessional and I would not recommend going here. The receptionist is very rude. They provided conflicting information about my appointment and lied to me about the appointment confirmation policy (they never told me that it was required to call back to confirm my appointment). The salon canceled my consultation for no reason other than for another client appointment. Then they told me they feel another salon may be a better fit for me. For a business that has never met me and only spoke to me on the phone they sure do know how to turn away new business. My experience explained below. I made an appointment for a consultation with Kaitlyn at 12:30pm on a Saturday. The salon called me to confirm my appointment while I was at work. I missed the call so the receptionist left me a seemingly normal message. It did appear she wanted to change my appointment time but said if not the time slot was fine. She did NOT say I have to call back to confirm. This was the voice mail to text translation: "Hey Dana it's Christy calling from Gerber Salon. I'm just calling to confirm your consult with Kaitlyn tomorrow at 12:30pm. She did get an opening at 10:45 if that works for you or 11 but give me a call if you want to change otherwise we're going to see you at 12:30 tomorrow." Seven minutes later I get another call from the salon I picked up the phone but it was at the same time I was getting on a conference call for work and couldn't really talk. I tell the receptionist to confirm my appointment at 12:30pm and that I can't change the appointment time. Then hang-up the phone to jump on my work call. A few minutes later I receive a text message that my appointment is canceled because my appointment was not confirmed. Meanwhile, I confirmed the appointment less than 10 minutes ago. They then told me that they moved my appointment because they didn't want me to wait. At the same time they told me they canceled my appointment and feel another salon may be a better fit for me. read more

I see Bob for my cut and he is so pleasant. I have been going for the past 10 years here. Though I switched my hair dressers a few times throughout those years everyone still says, hi to me and asks me how I'm doing. That makes me as a customer feel great. There is no animosity. I have been a customer here for over 15 years and all the stylists are excellent. But I have experienced a few incidents that have caused me to take my business elsewhere. Just recently I had a family emergency at home involving one of my children. The salon has a 24 hour cancellation policy, which is understandable. I would need to cancel my appointment set for the following day in order to see our therapist. The appointment was in the morning but it was early afternoon when i called to cancel. I knew I had missed the cut off by a couple of hours but I had never canceled on short notice before and there was nothing I could do. So instead of 24 hours notice I gave them 22 hours. When I spoke with reception I explained the situation and they told me to hold on. I could hear her speaking with someone about the issue. When she got back on the line she said it was "fine", but informed me that from now on, I would be required to leave a credit card on file whenever I made an appointment! Again, I was a customer for over 15 years, dealing with a family emergency and I was treated like my business meant absolutely nothing! Additionally, the salon operates out of a run down old house in keyport with constant price increases. The cost of services is exorbitant for the neighborhood. I don't expect special treatment, but I do expect just an ounce of understanding from an establishment where I have spent thousands over the years. read more

First I must say the atmosphere and staff are very friendly. They offer you water, wine, etc and make you feel comfortable while you wait. The problem for me came a week after I got my balayage. Paying close to $400, with tip included for a cut and a balayage , I did not expect to go back a week later because the color lifted/faded/washed out or whatever the right term is. They did offer a complementary glaze to fix the problem but instead of getting the color and look I first got and loved it turned into a dull brown. Now a week later the color has faded/lifted/washed out again and is another color. In part I fault the colorist but I also fault the product they use. I have had my hair colored in so many ways for close to 20 years now and having a color lift/fade so quickly has never happened before. I'm not sure if the product they use does not work well on people of color's hair type, if it's bad product, or if the way my hair was colored was done incorrectly. Attention Curly Girls--- At long last a stylist you can trust your curls with! I just had the best haircut with Linda, and it didn't break the bank! I've been getting Deva-Cuts, and Ouidad "carve and slice" cuts for years now, but they are never as amazing as I always wish. Although, Linda is Ouidad certified, so if that's something you're looking for you don't have to go far to find it. She took her time to talk to me about what I was looking for, was open to letting me "plop" my hair afterwards (google "hair plopping" or check out this blog about it http://www.justmyinkblot.com/how-to-diy/plopping-curls/). Before she picked up scissors she explained step-by-step what she was planning to do, and gave me the chance to understand her process. AND she told me that when I started styling my hair on my own, at home, if there was anything I wasn't happy with I could pop back in, and she would fix it. That's never happened before. She did the most amazing job! My hair now has the shape and dimension I was looking for. I've never been so pleased with a haircut in my life. The salon staff is incredibly sweet and down to Earth. Everyone was interested in learning about "plopping", and didn't make me feel uncomfortable about bringing my own stuff. I didn't feel uncomfortable there at all. It felt like they were all friends, and they were great at making me feeling like I was a part of it all. I lived at the Jersey shore for 22 years. I was transferred to Los Angeles a year ago and sadly had to switch salons. After 2 failed salons here, my hair began to fall out. I flew back to NJ and Robert Gerber Salon and to my regular ladies, Lauren for color and Jess for the cut. My hair thanked me and everyone said "Your hair never looked better"!!! I do fly for an airline so the ticket was free but taking time off to fly there and drive an hour to the salon from the airport isn't easy. It is worth it though. Long story short - I was a regular customer, right up until a NEW stylist screwed up my color. The owner took a look and literally made me feel like I had no right to an opinion! The course of action was throwing glaze on it (they did this 3 times) but clearly it wasn't working. Not only do you get excellent customer service at Robert Gerber Salon, but they have created a chic, inviting environment that makes you feel special the minute you walk through the door. They also keep their employees updated on the newest hair trends by sending them to several training class a year at Bumble and Bumble. My hairdresser, Erika Case, is not only phenomonal at what she does, but is also the network educator at the salon. One did color and one did my blow out and of course there was the shampoo girl. First of all Chelsea is one of the most talented hair artists I have ever had do my hair. I will give her 5 stars. The 2 stars is because of the lack of appointments for her, you will wait months to get an appointment with her and may only be able to get color and no cut or vice versa. They will offer you an appointment with another stylist but if you go there for Chelsea why would you want to go to someone else? They need to put a freeze on new clients, so that existing clients are able to come in. I stopped coming to this salon for that reason. read more

I have been to this salon several times and had amazing service. But after today, I will never go back there again. I wish I could give them 0 stars. I had an appointment with Linda to have balayage done (brown to a golden blonde color). My hair is dark brown, almost black naturally, and very long (down to lower back). When I showed Linda a photo of what I liked, she immediately started talking down to me, saying things like: "your hair will not lift", "it is not going to turn out how you want it", "it will come out orange", "you must be realistic", etc. I think she told me I need to be "more realistic" about 100x. I completely understand that my hair may take several sessions to get it exactly where I want it. As I explained to her, this was not my first rodeo. When I told her that I had blonde highlights done years ago at a different salon (which came out absolutely perfect after one session), it was like she didn't believe me. She wanted to see a picture of it, and after I showed her, she continued to come up with excuses of why it still won't work today. I told her I wanted my base color to be dark brown, and she told me it would definitely come out orange. But then later on, told me she if she did try to get my roots lighter, they would come out the same chocolate brown as my ends (my ends are a little lighter than my roots). I told her that would be perfect because I love that color. Again -- excuses. I felt as if she was rushing me out because she saw the length and dark color of my hair and simply did not have the time or desire to do it. She asked me if I don't like the way my hair is now. OBVIOUSLY NOT IF I AM HERE FOR COLORING. Her tone was so rude and nasty. She finally got what she wanted, and I told her I will not have anything done today because I'm not sure what to do after everything she told me. She didn't even look at me as she said "nice to meet ya" and stormed away, leaving me upstairs, in the salon chair with the robe still on. I had no idea what I was supposed to do after that. I explained what happened to my friend who recommended to have balayage done at Gerber. She was appalled and called on my behalf to complain. The manager Lorraine stuck up for Linda, and said there is nothing they can do for me. They are too booked because they are "that good." Give me a freaking break! She said that Linda walked away because she was frustrated and they were busy. Lorraine also brought up to my friend how my sister called earlier asking for a refund (which is not true). My sister was overcharged and simply wanted to clarify what she paid for. Lorraine never called my sister to explain anything, but didn't fail to mention the situation to my friend, who was calling on my behalf. I work with people everyday as a nurse and I know horrible customer service when I see it. I do not work in the hair industry but that does NOT mean you talk down to me and making me feel stupid for wanting my hair to be lighter. She basically said it was impossible for people with dark hair to achieve what I wanted. I have been to Gerber 2 other times for coloring, and the first thing everyone always says is "It's not going to come out like that." But it came out just fine. They are negative and underestimating their abilities, but today I am appalled at the service I received here. It's a shame because the receptionists are so nice. Hopefully they can teach Linda and Lorraine some manners. If you have dark/thick/long hair, I would recommend you go to a salon where they have the training and skill to work with our kind of hair. read more

Unprofessional and Diversity Ignorant I have been to this salon a few times and have had great experiences each time but after today I will never go again. I recommended this place to a very close friend who booked a double process with Linda. When she got there Linda and my friend could not reach an agreement and my friend decided not to get her hair colored. Linda said "nice to meet ya" without looking at my friend and left her in the chair with the Salon robe on to escort herself out. The unprofessionalism of that action alone is disgusting. My friend called me very upset and after speaking with her I called to speak with Lorraine, the owner, to share my concern of how my friend was treated. Lorraine was not sympathetic to what had happened with my friend and when I asked if there was anything she could do to rectify the situation and encourage my friend to return to the salon, she said she can't do anything. She said "we are booked because we are that good." I took this very personally because every single client should matter and you should be treated with respect and kindness. You shouldn't have to hear that the salon has so many other clients to take care of that it doesn't matter if you come there or not. She has not called my friend to apologize for the unprofessionalism of her staff and she probably won't. I believe Linda did not like the amount of time it was going to take her to color my friend's hair because it is darker and she had other appointments for that day. This is a real problem for thick, dark-haired women. People are not familiar with the coloring technique for darker hair or are scared of the amount of time it may take. They often mess up or say they can't do it and I hope in the future they are better trained on the hair of people with different diversities. If you have this hair type, go to another salon who will work with and for you because you are spending a lot of money to feel good about yourself and you deserve the best service. read more

I started going to Robert Gerber in 2010 on recommendation from a friend who had particularly nice hair. A year later I moved about 45 minutes north and struggled to find a salon that was reasonably priced, treated you well, and did a great job. After a few very bad haircuts and a lot of attitude, I decided that Robert Gerber was worth the travel. I drive down when I can from New Brunswick just to get a haircut here. The waiting experience is always nice. They always have an area set up with fresh water (usually with fruit in it!) small snacks like bagels, and coffee/tea. I've had my hair cut by multiple people (all of whom have done a great job). I highly recommend Shannon! She did an awesome job cutting my hair and she did a great job when I asked for a blowout with a lot of body. I LOVE the products they use and especially the shampoo and conditioner. The people are incredibly nice and and salon itself is clean and well-decorated. They make it a fun experience rather than a hassle, I always feel like it's worth the drive! :) read more

I've been living in the area for about 8 years now, but couldn't find a hair stylist I liked as much as the one I went to back home. So I bounced around from salon to salon for a few years before settling on one that was ok. Well, they've been getting kinda spendy in the last few years & the cuts I got from them were just ok. I finally figured that if I'm handing over my hard earned money, I want more than just ok. I found Robert Gerber salon just by Googling it, & am I ever glad I found them!! They are fabulous!! The salon is in an old Victorian house, but the inside is bright, airy, and comfortable. Some of the chairs even have a view of the water. Everyone here is helpful, knowledgeable, and very friendly. I got a cut from Heather and even though we played it safe since it was my first time with her, I love how she cut my hair!! I loved it even more when it started growing back in a couple of weeks later. I can't wait to go back to her & do something a little crazy with the cut & color. I went back about a week later and got a feather extension. I wish I remember the woman's name who did it for me, but she was extremely helpful. And patient, since it took me about 20 minutes to decide on which feather I wanted, and she held about 10 different ones up to my head so I could finally come to a decision. They have spa services on the upper levels (it's a 3 level house). They also have gift certificates (which I think you can buy online, if I'm not mistaken) so you can start dropping hints to your significant others, like I plan on doing :-) And then they're's the price. Guess what? The prices are reasonable! Which came as a shock to me because based on my love of my haircut I really expected it to be expensive. Oh, and I almost forgot, if you "Like" them on Facebook, they have some specials and are sometimes looking for volunteers for classes they have (I don't know if the service would be free or if you would get a discount, I haven't checked into it yet.) I am SO happy I decided to come to Gerber! I recently moved back to the area and was in need of a new salon. It was so easy to make an appointment and Karen was so nice on the phone. I could hear she was very busy in the background but she was friendly and didn't rush me. The salon itself is gorgeous and clean and charming as hell-- I love that beautiful old building! I walked in the wrong door (a rookie mistake) and right into the salon floor. Everyone said hi and welcomed me and didn't make me feel like a loser. The waiting area is comfortable with snacks and drinks. They also give you a robe to wear! It's nice and feels like a spa day. I was early for my appointment but Evelyn took me right away and gave me THE best shampoo ever! I was so relaxed. She listened to everything I said about what I wanted for my cut and was SO thorough. She really took her time giving me a great cut and my blowout lasted all night on a VERY humid day. I love this salon and will definitely be back. read more

I completely disagree with the above two reviews..I have been going to the salon for many years now and I will continue for many more. I find the staff to be extremely friendly unlike some salons in the city where they stick their noses up at you. Here they treat me like their second family, making me very comfortable. I get my hair colored, cut, straightened, nails, and facials..pretty much the works. All mentioned come out wonderfully and I receive compliments everywhere I go. I recommend people here all the time and they always come back with such postive responses. I could not be more suprised of the negative feedback mentioned above because never in all my years have I witnessed such behavior from the staff. I am very particular about where I get my hair done because I have curly hair and it is easy to get a bad cut, but when I needed a place close to school I was very happy with my experience at the Gerber Salon! I've had three different people cut my hair here and every one of them did an amazing job, I would trust anyone there. I was referred to Gerber by a friend. When I booked my first appt. I was quoted $50 for color + $50 for cut. My hair is blond with dark roots, so I stressed one criteria for color ... make sure the new color isn't reddish or - 'orangey'. Sadly, I had three major problems with my one visit to Gerber. My hair color turned out orangey... my worst fear AND I was charged double for my color - $100, not $50; AND when I called the salon to come in to fix the color - THE OWNER said she'd refund me - BUT she doesn't want me to come back to the salon again because SHE thought my color was beautiful when I left the salon a few days earlier. The owner didn't offer to have me come in so she could see that my color was orangey - and didn't have the courtesy to speak with me directly. She told the receptionist to tell me not to come back! I was so unbelievably disappointed in the customer service that I received at this salon as well as the way I was treated! I would not recommend this salon to anybody. I received a gift certificate from my mother for a hair cut with the owner, Bob. I arrived about 5 minutes early for my appointment and checked in. Bob came out to say hello since this was my first visit and to let me know that he was running about 10-15 minutes behind which was no problem. So, I waited and waited and waited and about 45 minutes later, I was told that Bob was ready for me and to go and get my hair washed. When I sat down, there happened to be a woman who had just walked in and also sat down to get her hair washed and who also happened to have an appointment with Bob. I was a little confused but I figured they would have her wait since I had been there for almost an hour. However, when I got to Bob's chair, the woman was already there. Bob then looked confused and said that it would only be another half hour and that I could wait in the next chair. At this point, it had been an hour since I arrived and I was annoyed. I explained that I had another appointment to get to and it was unprofessional to take another person before me that had just walked in. Since I had a gift certificate, I asked for reimbursement since I would not be returning. I was waved off and told to go talk to the front desk. The receptionist then called over the owner's wife who said I was being ridiculous and unreasonable to ask for a refund because it is normal to wait that long at a salon. She then walked away and continued to bad mouth me to her customers. I was completely shocked that I was treated this way and being bad-mouthed to the whole salon. I walked out (with my wet hair) and will never go back there again! So, again, I repeat, do not visit this salon!! read more

I wanted to give this salon a 5 star because I like how my hair came out, however, the customer service was awful. First I must say Melissa M did a fabulous job with my balayage; she was patient and knowledgeable about the process. I paid quite a bit for it though, and the breakdown did not make sense to me. The balayage was too bright and needed to be toned down. I didn't realize that I'd have to pay an additional fee for toning. Previous salons I've been too have always included toning/glazing in the price of the balayage. Also, do not go by the online prices because you will pay much more in the salon. When I brought this point up to the salon, they did not feel responsible to honor the prices listed online. To me, that is terrible customer service and very unprofessional. The reason I was given for my increased prices was based on the amount of product used. If that's going to be the case, then the website must reflect "20 and up" instead of a flat rate. The biggest reason I am rating this salon so lowly is because my sister had a terrible experience. She went for a balayage with Linda, who discouraged her from getting anything done, likely because she was busy and did not have time to tend to my sister's needs. My sister ended up deciding to not get anything done. Linda left her with a "nice to meet ya" as she walked away and left her sitting in the chair with the robe still on. My sister had to escort herself out. When the salon was called about this matter, the owner Lorraine defended Linda's unprofessionalism and could not compensate my sister because the salon is "too good" per Lorraine. How disgusting. Since Lorraine doesn't care for our business, I guess she won't be upset to find out she lost 4 customers and everyone we would have recommended. This salon is a hit or miss. Hair is very personal to people and unfortunately, if you go to Gerber and you are not satisfied with any little thing, there is 0 compensation. They simply think you're crazy for having anything bad to say.
