So tricky to review. I dislike the service (everyone in the kitchen when you enter stares you down... awkward). I dislike the atmosphere (cheap looking and crowded... looks dated).... breadsticks totally gross (hard and served with a scoop of butter? Umm kay)..... But then again... the food is sooooooooo good. NOTE:DON"T GET A HAMBURGER. very gross here. So is the salad. But if you come to an italian restaurant and order italian then you are in for a delicious treat! The ravioli is fantastic, the chicken mushroom fettuccine sooo good and you are served plenty! Pizza is super good! with great ingredients and tradition. Rating on taste alone, the pizza was gross. The sauce has this strange taste about it. I think maybe they use too many herbs and not enough salt. Also, the dough is really under baked. Thin crust usually has that...you know, crust? Well not this one. It's more like rubber. Deep dish wasn't impressive either. Once again, dough was under baked, and the toppings just taste off. Not spoiled or anything but something is just different. The calamari was not fresh but the mushrooms and tiramisu were tolerable. I came here with my parents during a family vacation when I was about 10 years old, and we all remember having a good time and great food. So when my mom and I were in the area last weekend we were excited to be able to go back. Unfortunately we probably won't be visiting again. The service was good and our waitress was really nice, otherwise I would have given this place a 2 star rating instead. She was cheerful and gave us refills quickly and often. The food however was very disappointing. I had the bay shrimp and linguine and it had virtually no flavor. My mom had the manicotti which was okay. Our meals included a bread basket, but it only had 2 really small pieces of bread and that was it. We could hardly believe our bill came to $50! Maybe we just didn't order the right entrees, but we just didn't feel our food was worth that much. read more

Everything was gross. I sent back the first dish but the second was worse. They gave us some weird sweet Mayo and sub par marinara with our cold mozzarella sticks. The bread was stale. My salad had one lone slice of zucchini on it and shredded carrots. I questioned if they thought zucchini was cucumber. The dish I sent back was the special consisting of salmon linguini in a red sauce. It was spaghetti with salmon in it. A very odd combination. When I saw salmon linguini I had assumed it would be in a lemon caper or garlic cream sauce, it being fish. No. It was the weirdest dish I think I've had in a restaurant. I ordered Alfredo next thinking that's super easy and hard to mess up. I was wrong. It was bland and flavorless. No offerings of salt and pepper. I couldn't eat it either. He got the deep dish pizza. Which was just ok. Their was enough cheese in it for 3 pizzas but hardly anything else. We ended up taking our $26 dollar pizza to a homeless man who probably was disappointed as well. I feel bad saying this because I get businesses are struggling, but it was so unbelievably terrible I just don't know how they stay in business. read more

I rarely leave completely negative reviews, but I have to here. I went expecting great things from a neighborhood Italian restaurant that appeared to be here some time. I ordered the cannelloni and tortellini combo with garlic bread for $14.25. I was asked if I wanted salad. Yes I do! I thought it might come with it.... wrong. Ok. Fast forward. Home. Hungry. Totally shocked. 2 small cannelloni with (I know! I counted the suckers!!! There were so few!) 13 tortellini in a sauce that looks straight from a can! Garlic bread has no garlic and is the same size as a ladyfinger biscuit. Insult to injury; the butter??? Isn't butter! It's a small container of "whipped topping", in other words: edible oil product. They charged $2.00 extra for a salad out of a bag. Not a grape tomato in the bunch. Should the bag salad not be free with this sub par cast of characters? I say: who cares? Go to Safeway, buy 2 cans of Chef-boy-R-Dee, whole loaf of yummy garlic bread, salad to go.... feed everyone. I will not be back. Not enough food for a grown man. I was expecting to be wowed for a restaurant in business this long, and had high expectations- took a friend here who wanted 'great Italian food' and it was just ok. Most of all the dishes lacked flavor - I had a mushroom linguini dish that tasted like basic olive oil, mushrooms and pasta..and the presentation was sloppy. I even had to add salt. My friends lasagna and spaghetti was basic tasting he said. I would have assumed that an old restaurant as this would have at least amazing basics- on top of it, the wait staff seemed confused and stressed. Had a fabulous meal at Geppetto's tonight! We're in town for the eclipse and couldn't have asked for a better dinner! They even had an eclipse pizza! I had the tortellini and cannelloni and it was amazing! The meal came with garlic bread and salad and they serve crispy breadsticks before your food arrives. Came here after reading all the reviews. We were not disappointed. My wife had the chicken marsala with spaghetti and meat sauce I had the combination lasagna and raviolis with meat sauce. We each had some soup I had the minestrone she had the tortellini noodle. We enjoyed some of the house Chianti. We were very satisfied. If we were here again we would come back. After attempting to eat at 2 other Italian style restaurants with no success, I landed here. The server was attentive and food was good for what you paid for. The owner introduced himself and the staff were all polite and outgoing. I got the impression it was under new ownership. This is a family friendly restaurant and a good place for kids. Let me start by saying I've been coming to this place since I was a kid with my folks back in '74, back when it still had windows on one side, original owners worked every night, and a guy would come to your table and play the violin on weekends. In a lot of ways it hasn't changed since then; different faces and the live entertainment nixed. Reading many of the bad reviews I can tell people might not get Geppetto's. If you're looking for a brightly lit open floor plan, Oregon laminated thin crust only pizza place, with plenty of benches for the little leagues - this is not the place for you. You might be looking for a beer and pizza place, like Paddington's or Wallery's. This is wine and pizza - kids are more than welcome, but the place isn't set up to entertain the kids while worn out parents take a breather. It's not a fine wine place either. The place is set up to drink wine like the Italians drink wine - in place of water; inexpensive and abundant - with a lot of interesting discussion involved. Think of Geppetto's as three different themes that overlap; pizza, Italian food, and bar in an old school Italian restaurant. This place had Calzone before it was popular elsewhere, great ravioli, good spaghetti, (Italian spaghetti is more of a side dish than the main meal it is in the states). The pizza is unique as far as Salem pizza goes. Thick crust isn't bad, I just prefer the thin. I noticed they changed it a little a few years ago, maybe in response to a reviewer that might have gone there thinking it was Pietro's. Too bad, but it's still good. I hope they never change. It's the closest thing to natural relaxed ambiance without artificial corporate manufacture Salem has. This might be why out of towners like it so much. The closest place, in terms of atmosphere, I've found to this place is Matt's Burger's in St Paul Place, MN. Go here as a couple or a group of friends. Relax, drink some wine, and start the conversation criticizing the decor. Either order the pizza or go Italian ala cart with coffee and dessert to finish up. Everyone leaves having had a good time - even if they aren't sure why. read more

Defiantly not the worst place I've eaten, but would I go back, NO. We were really excited to try Geppetto's because the ratings weren't THAT bad, and the Spaghetti Warehouse downtown, is not a favorite by any means. We walked in, it was dark and a little confusing. When you walk in, there is a counter that is set up to place orders, we thought maybe it was an order and pay up front then pick your seat kind of deal, but then the hostess popped her head out of the kitchen and asked if we were dinning in. The tables were covered in vinyl table clothes like grandma has, and they were SUPER sticky. There were two dirty forks under our table and several broken crayons... We asked the waiter what she recommended and she said the sausage carbanara, so that's what my husband got, and I ordered the lasagna & spaghetti combo with meat sauce. He ordered the tortellini soup and I the house salad ranch on the side, and two waters. She brought out the soup and salad 10 minutes later (mind you they were not busy at all, guess that should have been our sign!) the soup was chicken broth and tortellini's nothing else, my salad was romaine lettuce, pickled carrots and croutons, smothered in ranch (remember I asked for it on the side?) I didn't say anything because it took 10 minutes just to get the soup and salad. Fifteen minutes later our food came out... read the description of the carbanara, onions, garlic, fennel sausage.... none of that was in there, the sauce was very bland, no onions, no garlic, their idea of fennel sausage was ground pork with a itty bitty pinch of dried fennel.... The lasagna and spaghetti were not at as bad, the meat sauce was bland, but luckily there was s&p on the table along with crushed red pepper flakes. We never got refills on our water, the waitress never came to check on us once she brought out the meal. Would I got back? No. Would I recommend this to anyone? Maybe to someone who enjoys bland food? I know it sounds like a harsh review, but in the end you should enjoy your food experience and we did not, had I read a review like this I wouldn't have even walked it. read more

It doesn't look like a whole lot in a strip mall along Lancaster. Even once you walk in, it looks like the kind of pizza place you would take the kids after a baseball game. Alas, was tres disappointed. The NY steak was thin and a lot of gristle. More mushrooms than previously. I asked for no bread (it wasn't very good) and asked for more of the wonderful garlic red potatoes. I got the no bread, but didn't get more of the potatoes. Then she asked if we wanted a box to take the uneaten meal home in. What for, it is tasteless now it will be as bad at home. Customer service is BEYOND fantastic and the food is ok. The environment is darling, and the art is cute but fitting. I had the lasagna which was ok but nothing to write home about. My date had the evening sausage special and he enjoyed it. What sets this place apart is the quantity sizes, over the top good waitstaff, and clean spaces to eat. Came here for lunch the other day. We had been trying to come here for quite some time but for some reason it was always closed when we stopped by. Anyway it was finally open so we came in for lunch. The place is kind of dark and you walk toward the back of the restaurant past the enclosed bar area and the pizza counter to get to the seating. They had a lunch buffet that was was VERY reasonable at $6 I think it was. The buffet wasn't very large, a small salad bar with maybe a dozen toppings and then a hot bar with 2 pizza types, and about 4-5 other items including chicken breast, scalloped potatoes and other misc items. Overall I thought the food was good but a bit on the bland side but I always find buffet food to be a bit bland. There was enough food there for me to eat and find something I liked. But don't go in expecting Izzy's or Hometown, there is a reason why it's so much cheaper than they are. Our server was extremely nice and was quick on service. I wouldn't be much more than half through my drink and he was refilling it. This guy is what made the meal. read more

This place hasn't changed much in the 20 years I have lived in Salem. The pizza is very Chicago. The sauce is powerful and quality. The house signature sausages are perfect. The daily buffet is small and good. Not sure why the scalloped spuds- must be a tradition. The salad bar is also small, but you can make a great salad from the items. The waitress hasn't changed in twenty years either. She remembers who you are, and always efficient. Their food is not mass produced stuff like some of the other Italian restaurants. read more

First, the prices of their food is priced way to much. I got mozzarella sticks for $8.50 for 7 sticks. That's about $1.21 per stick and these sticks are short, crappy, have been frozen and just warmed up a bit. The pasta is seemed to be made in a giant pot and just kept warm for hours upon time and is placed on horrible thick sauce which will become hard after minutes of sitting on the table. This restaurant is the shittiest place I've ever eaten at, I would prefer McDonald's but that's just me. I highly recommend not going to this crappy place, they will rip you out of your money, food quality, and just your appetite. read more

We didn't get the whole dining experience because we ordered from home for deliver. The only positive about the experience was the food came earlier than expected. First things first, their online menu does not list any prices so one must guess at the cost of their meal. Irritating, but we wanted to try some place new so we went for it. Second issue, the dinner entrees say they come with "soup or salad, and bread with garlic butter." Be warned, if you chose salad there is a $2 up charge not mentioned anywhere. Our two plates came to 30 some-odd dollars. I ordered the Sausage Carbonara and my partner got the Three Cheese Manicotti. Both plates were extremely bland. The onions and garlic that were supposedly sauteed with the sausage on my dish were nonexistent and the cream sauce tasted simply like cream and nothing else. The salad that came with it was not much more than a bagged salad mix and the bread was two slices of cold hard bread with a pat of butter. So overall, they are overpriced for what you get and its very underwhelming in the flavors. I gave them an extra star for their prompt delivery. read more

This is the first time I've been there in about a decade. I really had reservations as to whether or not we were going to be able to find a decent deep dish pizza in Salem. But that's what we were craving and we found Geppetto's. We did call ahead because the website mentioned that it would be 40 minutes to prepare. The pizzas were just coming out of the oven as we arrived. This was not your average pizza. The manager was so helpful and friendly and the pizzas were really delicious. We will be back. read more

Early in the month, Sept. 2017, I was pleased to have lunch at Geppetto's. The pizza of the month was ready to be introduced, STEAK & BLEU, we loved it. Everything a terrific pizza should be. I really like this adorable restaurant, the atmosphere is happy, the service is friendly and the price is right. How good can it get?
