The eggplant rolls with the walnut paste was definitely a huge surprise, I wasn't sure I'd like them but they were so good! Full of flavor, good texture and just a pleasant surprise all around. The cheese bread was just as delicious as you would imagine and was great with the beef stew. The only item I wasn't a huge fan of was the dumplings, they were a little too doughy for me but they still had good flavor.

That said, I did go to this restaurant, Istanbul Grilli, while in this city on a stopover. (I ate at a restaurant of another ethnicity using a menu the other night I was here.) They did have a buffet going when I visited. This part of the globe has really short days during the colder months and really long days during the warmer months. Thus, it was dusk when I arrived here to eat, so I don't recall if it was the end of the lunch buffet or the beginning of a dinner buffet, if such a thing even exists. There is also a menu to order from. At Istanbul Grilli, there seem to be two major serving stations: the one toward the left and further back seems to have the meats, chicken, and main dishes and the one to the right and closer to the front seems to have the salads, fruits and vegetables, and some desserts. There is also an area where things like coffee and tea get put together. Some food selections were 3 star items and some things were 4 star offerings. It was good, but it didn't rock my world. (That's probably because I keep trying to like Turkish food as much as I like Greek food.) I don't believe they had kunefe, which I really like, but they had something like baklava. The interior is clean. It's on a major street close to the center, so there are big windows all around and the lighting is good. The service leaned amicable. The price is a good value and fair for this slightly more expensive country. It's also easy to get here, being close to Helsinki's center. The Metro seems to weave across the city and surroundings in an east-west manner, so it won't get you close enough. However, one can easily hop on just one tram or bus and/or walk to reach this restaurant. These latter observations kick up Istanbul Grilli to a solid 4 stars. In addition to that, the restaurant is popular and one will see customers who are locals, probable expats, tourists, and people of Turkish and Middle Eastern extraction. If such a diverse clientele frequents this eatery, that is also indicative that it's a worthwhile stop.

Our recent visit to restaurant OX in Helsinki was a real feast for the eyes, as well as the palate…read more The restaurant serves bistro style food from ingredients from the season and the wine list features small producers also from the biodynamic movement. The small restaurant is rather new in town, located on the edge of the center and Punavuori. The ambience is warm and welcoming when we stepped into the restaurant. Fall was creaping on us and I felt very comfortable in the cozy little corner table. While waiting for our dinner company, we browsed through the list of available bubblies by the glass: Philipponat and Fleury Rose were the choices of the evening. When our friends arrived, we realized we could have ordered a bottle. The list by the glass was sufficient but nothing to get excited about. The menu gave us two options: either go for a surprise menu, or choose dishes from a la carte. Tricky, as well all wanted the tasting menu, but there were several picky people in the dinner party: my date with his dislike for sea food, my friend E who does not eat mushrooms and J, who is just picky because he can (why make up any excuse for that). The waiter was kind enough to tell us what was on the surprise menu, so that we could make our order. We went for a mix, my date choosing a la carte, and me going for the surprise. The boys ended up browsing the wine menu for a long time before settling for the Printz von Hessen 2002 Riesling. I take it as there were so many good alternatives to select from. For food we had some lovely lamb tartar, pork tongue with beetroot, cabbage soup with kale, and deep fried cod. Mmmm..deep fried, but still very fresh, and some German Spätburgunder to wash it down. However, the desserts were the best: sea buckthorn parfait with chocolate and hazelnut, and lingonberry ice cream with basil cake and strawberries. They were both delicious. The only thing I can give a negative comment about is the service. It was not bad. Not unfriendly. But the waiter just seemed exhausted with all of our questions. We did take a lot of her time with asking about the foods and wine, but still, you could take it that we were just really interested. Perhaps she did not mean anything, but we just didn't feel the love. Anyway. Great experience. Not horrible on the bank account, perhaps we paid 50 something Euros for the five course menu. Beautiful and tasty food! I can warmly recommend.

We had a three course tapas meal with strawberry ice cream for dessert. Our server suggested a bottle of Cava Pere Ventura white wine for us too. First course: 8/10 We were served three servings of small items on our plate. The first was a fish with goat cheese on top. There was definitely some superior dexterity in the preparation of this, as the fish was very precisely and thinly sliced. The second was duck breast. You could taste the distinct duck flavor here. They preserved the wiry, semi-coarse texture here. Probably my favorite of the three. Finally, there was a cup of (sorry I forget the name honestly), but it was kind of a strong, punchy green .. okay yeah it's very hard to describe without the ingredients in mind but it was so distinctive, I still remember the taste weeks later. A lil too strong for me but unique in concept. Second course: 7/10 I had the mackerel of the night. Crispy layer on the outside, pretty juicy on the inside. Good thing about the plate was that the mackerel wasn't too dry, like an average job would do. The zucchini and squash were actually the better part of the plate for me. Delicate layer of oil on top that gave it an extra hint of bouginess. Dessert: 7.5/10 Strawberry ice cream. The fruit itself was fresh and easy to chew (surprisingly hard to do well with frozen ice cream). Killed this cup in a hurry. Was it worth the price? Debatable if you ask me. This was for sure an expensive meal. But, the service was superb, and the place is a fine, indulgent place to dine. Overall, the food was fine, but it wasn't terribly memorable or life-changing to warrant a five star.
