If you want travel information they have brochures and employees that will help you their hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. they even have orange juice that you can sample for free as well as grapefruit juice. They also have picnic tables on the side of the building It is a nice spot to stop at especially if you're traveling a far distance.

Desk clerk can't do anything for us because he is the only one there. The beds were comfortable and the A/C worked. That's about the only positives. I always thought Holiday Inn Express hotels were overpriced and have tried to avoid them whenever possible. They claim the higher price comes with a higher standard of service. This experience has done nothing to change my mind. That's for sure.

Inside is a small welcome center with some information about Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach. Along with that are some news articles about the history of the area. What is not present is a bunch of displays of things that are further away. I have been in a fair share of welcome centers for towns, and a lot of them have multiple stands with information about towns and areas well outside of the local town. This one is kept neat and tidy, with a pair of attendants that are knowledgeable about the area. The site is that of the old train station, and you can see that in the architecture of the building. This was one end of a line that used to extend all the way to Cedar Key, crossing Florida, and was originally built to ferry goods from ships from one side of the state to the other in order to avoid having to sail around the tip of Florida. The line was completed in 1861, which was just in time for the US Civil War to start and interrupt operations. After the war, the company operating the railroad restarted operations, but failed by 1866. After that the railroad changed hands a number of times, but maintained operations until 1932 when the Cedar Key end of the line ceased operations. There are still parts of the line still in use today.
