Our group entered the restaurant wearing motorcycle vests. We were not loud, disruptive, threatening, intoxicated, disrespectful, or causing any problem whatsoever. We were simply customers who happened to arrive on motorcycles and wear vests. That was apparently enough for the manager on duty to decide that we were not welcome. There was no clearly posted notice at the entrance warning motorcyclists that motorcycle vests, club patches, or similar attire were prohibited. Had there been, we could have simply taken our money elsewhere without wasting anyone's time. Instead, management waited until we were inside and then made a judgment about us based entirely on how we looked. Call it a dress code if you want. When the rule is not posted and is suddenly enforced against people because of what their clothing supposedly represents, it looks a whole lot like profiling. And that is exactly the problem. You do not know someone's character because they wear a motorcycle vest. You do not know their profession, their military service, their community involvement, their family, their accomplishments, or the kind of person they are. You certainly do not know whether they will be a good customer. Hunter's Lodge apparently decided none of that mattered. For the record, the waitresses were excellent. They were friendly, professional, apologetic, and clearly uncomfortable with the decision being made by management. They deserve absolutely none of the criticism here. In fact, they handled the situation with more courtesy and professionalism than the manager who created it. The criticism belongs squarely with management. If Hunter's Lodge has decided that "certain" motorcyclists are not the kind of people they want in their establishment, they should have the courage to put that policy on the front door where everyone can see it. Post the sign. "Motorcycle vests not welcome." "Attractive motorcycles outside, but riders wearing patches are not welcome inside." Whatever the policy actually is, own it. What you should not do is operate an open-to-the-public restaurant, allow people to walk through the door believing they are welcome, and then single them out because someone in management does not like what they are wearing or what they assume it means. We will never spend another dollar at Hunter's Lodge. I also strongly encourage every motorcyclist in the area to remember this experience when deciding where to eat, drink, gather, or spend their money. There are plenty of locally owned establishments that welcome motorcycle riders and understand that the quality of a customer should be measured by how they conduct themselves--not by what is sewn onto a piece of leather. Hunter's Lodge has every right to choose the atmosphere they want for their restaurant. And the motorcycle community has every right to choose establishments that actually want our business. After tonight, that choice is an easy one.
