I needed to have my gas tank release cable replaced on my Honda CRV and called around to lots of places. George's was able and willing to do it sooner and cheaper than anyone else. When I picked up the car, hours earlier than they had anticipated, they said the part was on back order everywhere, so they got creative. They made their own gas tank release cable with spare parts and replaced it, better than new. They also saved me about $120 on parts. They are a small local business with exactly the kind of sweet and polite folks you hope for. So kind and so helpful. Also, you have to love a business that has a shop dog just hanging around. George's is THE place to go to get your vehicle repaired. Best prices and service in the Greater Grand Rapids area...hand's down. We have taken 2 different vehicles there for them to fix and they not only repaired them, but saved us money both times. Yes...there was a bit of a wait to get the repairs done, but when you use the best word gets around. I'd rather use a garage that is BUSY than one that isn't. Look at it like a restaurant...you stay away from the ones that aren't busy because either the service is bad or the food sucks. The wait is well worth the service and cost at George's. read more

My roommate referred this place to me as you can't beat tried and tested word of mouth reviews and yelp! George's is a dutch family run business since 1965 which is always a good sign, because you can trust you'll get an honest evaluation and solid workmanship . This is no fancy dealership type service joint (thank god because I'm sick of feeling like I'm gonna get ripped off by mechanics all the time!), but Jos the owner super down to earth and real and has by far the best price ($35) anywhere I've previously been for a synthetic oil change! the owner is personable and I was referred by the past General manager of Harvey Lexus. He said this is the place to have your car fixed. When I saw the location it looked a little rough, I mean not shiny bright lights and snazzy, it is low key but so is the price. My son has a Pontiac Aztec that we bought with 130,000 miles on it and it now has 200,000 and running fine. I take it there every 6 months for a look over and fix what need to be fixed. This is usually an invitation for a mechanic to make a lot of money doing things that aren't needed. They don't do this, I trust them and that is why I keep going back read more

Terrible service. My car has been there since the beginning of February, 3 months now, with very little attempt at fixing it. I have called several times, and stopped in several times, and they always promise that they will get on it and call me no later than the next day. I went there based on reviews, and because the previous owner had always had it serviced there. I can't believe they can get away with this and still be in business. my 2006 land rover had a hard steering problem.i assumed it was the power steering unit and i replaced it myself.that did not fix the problem at all.so i took it to george's and it was fixed in one day for under a $100.if they were dishonest i would and could have paid hundreds of dollars for that service. read more

The first time we showed up Jos was fair to us and replaced the cabin air filter and t-stat...than...When the problem was still not fixed we immediately returned...than...Awful service! Went because of the reviews. 29 days total with my car sitting 98% of the time and never got fixed. My husbands car 10 days--never even took the time to bring it in or dig up the part for us. Many phone calls..no returns. Many stop in's and promises of letting us know! Total let down! Both vehicles we finally had to say "GIVE ME THE KEYS!" :( read more

George is very knowledgeable in European cars... but unfortunately, he is a one-man-show so scheduling and completion can suffer. Also, too many ppl coming in and out of shop area. Thoroughness can be an issue especially since juggling too many balls. You have to stay on top of your repair schedule to get your car back. read more

I bought a used car here that Jos said that he had worked on himself and that everything worked great... i got it for a couple hundred below bluebook value so i thought i was getting a great deal. Again Jos swore everything worked. I took a test drive, seemed to be fine. He had no insurance on it so i didn't take it on the highway. It wasn't hot so i didn't turn on the ac and i figured the low fuel light meant that it was low on fuel. not the case. so the ac system was completely shot, $300 in parts already, not to mention labor... the fuel gage did not work at all, which i thought ok... ill just fill up every 280 miles no problem, but on this car when the low gas light is on the cruise control stops working. And this was a car he said he did "ALOT OF WORK" on so he supposedly knew it well. It also clearly was in an accident as the driver side door howls badly when on the highway and the front end is all over the place... 'oh well' he said. [not to mention when you need to talk to him you have to stand in the doorway for 30 min while he talks to his other mechanics... seemingly teaching some of them how to fix cars, shouldn't they already know? } One of his other mechanics [toothless JIM] also had my work van for over 3 weeks. I was leaking radiator fluid somewhere mysteriously and it needed a new catalytic converter, transmission fluid change with filter, and new differential fluid... 3 weeks later, still not repaired, still no diagnosis as to where the fluid was leaking... and it turns out that that mechanic had no personal vehicle and was using my van for his personal transportation home.... and elsewhere!! really?! and he smoked heavily in my van as well leaving a disgusting stench. It also looked like he was hauling personal stuff in the back and it smelled like feces infested mothballs.... I had to go to his house and pick up my van that was still leaking and no converter installed, of course nothing else on the list was done... he first said that he was waiting on a "more affordable part" to come in and that he received it 'yesterday' and was putting it in 'today". When i stopped by his house at 6pm [when he said he would be there.... he showed up at 7:30, driving my van of course] when asked about how the converter went... he said he "hollowed it out so it shouldn't be a problem anymore"... which means he fixed my clogged converter by cutting out the inside of the converter... not putting a new one in. And then he said "oh before you go we better put some more radiator fluid in before she overheats......... It took everything in me not to take a tire iron to his head. Jos is a nice enough guy, but the lack of professionalism and honesty is appalling, not to mention his staff are complete idiots. If you sell a car you should tell people the truth and when something comes up broken that you said worked, you should fix it for free, especially seeing as you are a mechanic with a shop and you supposedly fixed everything already. Also when Jos takes a vacation the whole place shuts down because he can't trust his workers to run the shop, ive met quite a few people who have waited weeks for him just to look at their cars, the lot is full of cars that just sit and don't get worked on. They are too busy drinking beer in the shop. If you do go there... make sure toothless Jim DOES NOT work on your vehicle, he apparently can't see that well and has zero skill for diagnosing anything. If its a tire or a break pad i guess he can do that ok : ) I immediately took my van back to where i have been taking my fleet for years. Belle Tire on alpine... i know, its just a tire place... but much much more. They are real pros there with integrity. In 30 min they had my van diagnosed, i needed a new radiator and hoses... simple right? Fixed in a day. And when they said it would be done by 4 and they ran into a snag that would take longer, they called immediately [at 2] and rescheduled my picking it up an hour or so. They also helped me troubleshoot a few other complicated issues ive been having that Jim just didn't have the education to understand....[engine oil and trans oil cooling systems] Whats also great about Belle Tire is your entire service record is read by them every time you bring in your car and if something they fixed a year ago is having trouble again, they fix it for free. It was "under warranty" they said... I like hearing that. Cars are not all grease and monkeys, it actually takes an educated, certified mechanic to understand these things... and fix them properly. You get what you pay for and you pay for what you get. read more

This is the best mechanic I have found since moving to Grand Rapids. I first tried Community Auto and after shelling out $1000 and they still could not diagnose the problem I no longer trust the sparkling clean and fancy places. Jos (owner of George's) is extremely helpful and a really nice guy. Always quotes the best price and is up front and honest. I have been taken advantage of so many times at auto repair shops and I have never felt this to be the case at George's. Had it towed to George's with the understanding that it would be several days until the car could be looked at. Almost fell over when I got a call the same day that my car was ready. I give this mechanic a five star rating--I too had trouble getting through on the phone---so I went directly to the business...The phone just happened to be down --due to some outside wiring problems-----I have known him for a long time and have high regard for his work ethic. He was my parents mechanic for years and he is honest and fair. Yas has always treated me and my wife great. He is always quick to diagnose our car problems and doesn't over charge us for other things we don't need.
