After getting stranded in Holyhead due to the fact the ferries back to Ireland had all been cancelled for 24hrs, my friends and I headed here for a much needed drink, and what a brilliant idea.
Now, seeing that Holyhead is a port town, they are used to crazy tourist popping into their fair city and running a muck. And while there was little much running on our part, we were on a mission from God to raise a glass in every country we went to in the 36 hr period we were traveling (which thankfully was only two). We chose the George due to the very nice barman who gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner. (Not to mention the fact they had couples figure skating on the tele!!!! It was a little slice of AWESOME!!!!!!)
Naturally, our first choice was to sample the local beer. However, this idea was over ruled when we saw they had "Jugs of Joy". JUGS OF JOY, I tell you!!!!! Who doesn't want a little bit of joy in a jug? Nobody, that's who. Masquerading as a pitcher of shots, it really does add a little bit of joy in ones life after delayed trains, cancelled ferries and not really enough time to wander around the Welsh countryside.
The locals, who were all very friendly, seemed to be amused by the three American girls and one Canadian drinking drinks so fruity that for a moment I seemed to be transported out of a drafty bar in Wales to a tropical paradise in the South Pacific. They chatted with us, suggested other flavors we might sample, asked how we liked the weather, gave us some suggestions for breakfast places and joked about the wonderful Stena Line service to Dublin.
Spending an hour or so in the George really helped ease the distress of missing class the following day. If you are ever stranded in Holyhead, I highly recommend it. read more
