Our hosts were friendly and efficient and the breakfast was excellent and included croissants, fresh fruit salad, toast with various spreads available and of course full english cooked breakfast. More expensive than some in the area but otherwise hard to fault. Would happily return if visiting Bath again.

Everyone was quick to respond to questions about the food/allergies and also about the bedroom set up. When we arrived, the team was welcoming and allowed us to set up a little bit early as we had hired a private room. The private room was expensive but it was a holiday weekend so understandable. Everyone was very happy with their food. Our large group ordered a variety of à la carte and set menu items. Most of the party had the beef shin and loved it. The burger was absolutely delicious too. The desserts were a good size and not too sweet at the end of a big meal. The food was reasonably priced but the sides of veggies were a bit ridiculous. We paid £14 for a few pieces of broccolini! The ambiance was great though and it was just the perfect place to throw a surprise party. There is no parking at the Angel, but there's a big car park about a 5-7 minute walk away (pay when you park). There is street parking much closer, but it got very busy after 10am and the roads are very small to navigate if you're not used to driving in this area. The hotel rooms were so quaint and cosy (very Harry Potter vibes). We have some very tall family members who had to crouch down a lot but it definitely added to the ambience. Our only bad experience and criticism was over breakfast the following morning. The service was terrible (it was not the same team as the previous day) and they were not particularly friendly. One breakfast came out about 30 minutes before the rest. I then went to ask if there was a problem and suddenly all the rest came out, but every dish was extremely cold and had clearly been sitting on the side as the sauce on the eggs benedict had set. We would have sent it back but as it took so long we only had a few minutes to check out of our rooms once everyone had finished. This would have been a 5 star review otherwise. As we were leaving, some of the lunch staff from the day before were coming and immediately greeted us again. Much better customer service! Overall a great experience but definitely let down by the morning staff.

I had the vegan tempura starter, eggroll main (which I'm still thinking about), and the plum rice pudding dessert (which I sadly had to share with my partner). I'd eat all of it again. And again. And again. My partner had the scallop starter (on specials menu) which he describes as "divine". And he loved his lamb main so much that he actually started to pace his eating to make it last longer. Ambiance is beautiful, service is spectacular. With two starters, two mains, a pudding, and a bottle of prosecco, our bill was just over £80 - for the quality, we'd gladly pay that again in a heartbeat. I'd very happily come back to Lacock every time I'm back in England just to eat here.

The Angel Hotel is a former Georgian coaching-inn, now rated three AA stars. It has 32 en-suite guest rooms, plus a Lodge at nearby Abergavenny Castle. The restaurant has an AA rosette, with an award-winning wine list. The Foxhunter Bar has an open fire, original wood panelling from the early 1900's, and interesting old paintings of Abergavenny.There's a good range of beers like The Reverend James and London Pride, plus guest beers, and a half-dozen wines by the glass. Special mention must be made of their superb Afternoon Teas, with scones, cakes and pastries, served from 3.00 - 5.30pm, with is proper bone china and linen. For £6.00 you may have tea or coffee with a small selection of cakes, or freshly-baked scones with jam and cream. For £9.80 you get the pastries plus a selection of sandwiches:Black Mountain smoked salmon, Marinated cucumber and cream cheese, Home-cooked ham, and Egg mayonnaise with cress. Weighing in at £14.80 is the Champagne Tea: copious amounts of all the above plus champagne. The Angel has been awarded membership of the prestigious UK Tea Guild and for 2008 an 'Award of Excellence'. The Angel is one of only six hotels outside of London to have achieved this accolade. The Tea Menu runs to about 6 pages and is a really good read, describing with great affection the wide choice of leaf teas available. The hotel claims currently to be refurbishing their bedrooms. If you intend to stay there, make absolutely certain you ask for, and get, a refurbished room, because the older ones are shabby and unkempt. And the restaurant? Some seriously good food, much of it sourced locally. For Lunch expect £20 per head, Dinner double it; plus wine, from an excellent list containing several by the glass and half-a-dozen half-bottles. The room is L-shaped and the staff, whenever I wanted them, always seemed to be 'round the corner' out of view; and I counted SEVEN of them. Perhaps they were expecting a big lunchtime, but it didn't materialise. They reminded me of the proverbial London Buses - you wait for ages and then 2 or 3 came round the corner simultaneously. But no real complaints - better to have than not to have!

Also, the hotel claims to offer secure luggage storage for guests and yet I returned to find an unattended lobby and guests' belongings just out in the open for anyone to grab or tamper with. When raising concerns with hotel, verbally and in writing, they offered nothing but slight platitudes and defensive rhetoric. Zero mindfulness of customer service. In short, avoid. Bath has much better to offer.

The suite had two bedrooms, which was nice for a family, but being a Georgian house, there were quirks. The floors were very uneven, to the point that I would feel vertiginous walking around. The bathroom had uneven water pressure where the temperature fluctuated wildly, and there was not enough counter space for 4 people. There was a nice sitting room but definitely not enough closet space. However, the location is so lovely. It's about a block from the Pulteney Bridge and also a block from a full sized Waitrose. It's a short walk to the train station, Bath Abbey, and the Roman Baths. Staff is friendly and generally competent. The front desk staff was a little confused and slow, and, while the rooms were generally clean, I don't advise that guests look under the beds or behind the furniture, as those are very dusty (ick). I love that they leave biscuits to go with tea daily and that they actually replenish everything on a daily basis. Those biscuits were life savers for my jetlagged children whose stomachs were not yet on UK time. I contacted the hotel a couple times before we arrived. They were not able to help with arranging for a babysitter (they told me to Google "Bath" and "babysitter"), but they did give me good information about a wheelchair rental for my husband. I would consider returning here on a future visit.

Breakfast is plentiful and relaxed overlooking the greens, and it's a nice getaway location for multiple occasions. You can get here by bus if you want to walk a lot, but it's advisable to have a car. Golfing is the main event here if you're not getting married (or combine for a double-pop). We had a nice stroll around the entire walking route (you can finish it in an hour), and overall we enjoyed our stay. We'll hope to return next time in town.

The view from our room of the 18th hole of one of the site's two golf courses was very much appreciated, in addition to the view of the River Severn and the Severn Bridge. The room was spacious and quiet. In addition to the comfortable double bed we were provided with ample lighting, a large desk, a chest of drawers, side table (unfortunately found to be quite dusty), comfortable armchair placed to take advantage of the view (which I took full advantage of, relaxing with a book and a coffee first thing in the morning after my swim), several large and clean mirrors, and a bedside table each. The wardrobe with sliding doors contained several hangars, instructions on how to obtain dry cleaning services, an iron and board, a large electric fan, and a good-quality hairdryer. Above the chest of drawers and facing the bed was the large flat screen television, upon which a range of options were available (including the opportunity to purchase recently-released films). We were provided with a selection of tea and coffee in our room, along with a small but clean kettle. At one portion of each item per-guest we felt that we could have been spared having to contact reception in order obtain more. The bathroom provided high-quality facilities above the level of essential. So many hotels no longer have bathtubs, so the opportunity to enjoy a soak was very much appreciated. However, I cannot help but mention that a used bottle of complimentary body lotion was found behind the shower curtain. As neither of us are accustomed to feather pillows and prefer the support of a foam pillow. A quick call to reception and we had a couple of decent foam pillows sent up. The soft and spacious double bed, the comfortable temperature of the room, and the tranquillity of the surroundings made for a wholly restful night. The pool, although relatively small, was perfectly adequate for a few laps before breakfast. Both the sauna and steam room were clean and spacious. Although I didn't pay it a visit, the gym appeared to have plenty of modern equipment on offer in a pleasant atmosphere. The changing rooms were clean and provided secure digital lock mechanisms on spacious lockers, hairdryers, ample space in which to change and private facilities, and complementary toiletries. The breakfast buffet was fantastic in terms of the availability and quality of items. There is something to suit a great many tastes here and the staff seem only too happy to accommodate any special requests. I made the mistake of leaving behind a treasured jacket and was very pleased to find the facilities team had located it and dispatched it in the post to my home address.

The "kitchen" seems to rule the roost here as almost every question is met with "let me check with "the kitchen." "The kitchen" must be an omnipotent presence because the staff usually has a bit of trepidation when going to ask "the kitchen" questions. They have a small selection of items on the dining room menu and the food is not excellent and any deviation from items on the menu are strictly frowned upon. The menu does not change from day to day. Luckily, you may order from the bar menu in the library. This menu does not change either, but it does break up the monotony. We tended to enjoy this food more, but service was slow and inconsistent . Breakfast is the better option when dining in the dining room. The staff for the most part seems to operate with little or no training. They NEVER filled the water glasses. That's your job. They NEVER poured the wine, again, that's your job. This hotel seems to lack strong leadership. We had two rooms. The Queen Elizabeth room has extremely low beams. If one is over 5'3", one WILL hit their heads. We had to go to the front desk for ice to put on head bumps more than once. The third floor is for the most fit as there is no lift. Yes, I know we were staying in a castle and it was not going to be perfect, but for the price one is paying here, you expect first class service. Having said all of that, the gardens in the back are lovely, the visage from the front lawn is beautiful and the staff, though poorly, trained are friendly. Liam in the library area was very friendly and helpful. They need to have a rotating menu. The options in the nearby town are few to dine. It is possible to have a rotating menu, we also stayed at other manor houses which had wonderful menus and well-trained staff this trip.

The rates per night were a bit steep, but I justified it because "how often do ya do something like this?" So we did a night with dinner and breakfast included. Getting to the castle wasn't too bad we rented a car and made the journey into town. Parking is available and I believe they also have a charging area for EV. We checked in and were taken to our room, Queen Margaret's room. The employee was kind and explained some of the amenities like the complimentary gin and the common areas of the castle. We changed and went to explore, there was a wedding the night we were there so I feel like our exploration was cut a bit short since areas were reserved for them. We noticed there was a scale available in the room, but it needed a new battery so we asked at the desk for a replacement and was informed it would be done at turndown service. After walking the gardens, we went for drinks and played some of the games available in the sitting room/lounge. It was a bit unclear as to how to get bar service or the other amenities advertised. Having done research before it felt like there were things to do but upon arrival it was hard to figure out what we were able to do. Dinner was excellent; while sitting in the lounge you're served some almonds/olives and canapés where you place your order and then you're brought back into the main dining room. There is plenty of food even without the formal 6 course meal but it really is a fancy experience and the food is true art. We made an assumption that turndown service would happen at dinner but upon returning to our room- 2 to 3 hours later, everything looked the same. The shower was incredible and the bed was nice. You're provided with a fan which was helpful. Breakfast was a bit disappointing after the dinner we had the previous night- not sure I would need that component again. At check out I was given the invoice for one of the wedding guests, we had to refund that amount and charge the costs for our room. Looking at my statement the charges aren't equal so that's mildly concerning as well. Overall, Thornbury was still a cool experience for the bragging rights of staying in Henry VIII's castle, but I don't think I need to do it again. I'd come for the dinner but maybe skip the overnight stay.
