Thorough, caring, informed, approachable, friendly, knowledgable to do so many things many GPs don't or won't do. Sad- i have to say he loses a star. Not because of Dr. Cox, but b/c of the office staff. In the end, it's fine, but there's always an upfront mess to get a simple answer. I know they are a busy office, but damn, theres like 7 office bitties in there. And chit-chat is fine, but if the office is slammed, i dont want to see your goddamn pink Razr attached to you or anywhere near yo' desk. Get to work, answer the phone, and call your Project Runway peeps AFTER you punch out. I still love the Doc- he's great, but he deserves a better, more mature staff. read more

Our entire family sees Dr. Geoffrey Cox at South Oaks Family Medicine. We first started seeing him when we moved to Austin in 2003, and even though we now live on the other side of Austin, we continue to use this practice and Dr. Cox. We have never had such an attentive, thorough, and personable family physician, and we can't imagine going anywhere else. Dr. Cox's staff is always able to work us in for a same day appointment, generally with him, but if not, with another doctor or nurse practitioner. The office's nurses are also to be commended. They are wonderfully friendly and nice, and there is very little staff turnover, which is so helpful and reassuring. We have found Dr. Cox to be intelligent, thoughtful, caring and attentive. He is very open and flexible in his treatment approaches and well-informed about new and emerging treatments. No matter what may be wrong or what sort of treatment you prefer (natural, homeopathic, etc.), you won't feel awkward at all; and you will find Dr. Cox to be very knowledgable about a variety of treatment options. Never have we found a primary care physician so willing to listen to us and to involve us in the process of making choices about our healthcare. Although we had always used a pediatrician for our son, this practice and Drs. Cox and Stiegler both came highly recommended to us, and so we thought we would try it. Our son trusts Dr. Cox completely and feels very safe in his office, and we've been delighted at the advantages that come from all seeing the same physician. He knows our family histories well, and he's always well informed about what is going on in our lives -- being sure to check in on all of us whenever anyone visits. And in our time with Dr. Cox, we have seen that he and his office staff work equally well with children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly. All in all, I know Dr. Cox and South Oaks Family Medicine care about our family, and I wouldn't be happy entrusting our health to anyone else. read more

I think I am in love with Dr. Cox. Not only is he easy on the eyes, he has a great bedside manner and is SUPER thorough. and I love that his office uses EMR (electronic medical records). He is also well networked. When I told him that I couldn't remember my Rheum's name, he asked me to describe my Dr. He knew immediately who I was talking about. And the medical care itself was spot on. I had a keyloid (huge raised scar after surger) that itched so bad that I had scratched the top layer of skin off. He got me taken care right there in the office with a steroid shot. It worked! Not only does it not itch anymore, but it shrunk and is now a normal scar! I didn't have any issues with the office staff. It only loses a star for me bc I have to drive to Oak Hill. But I guess that is the only sacrifice I have to make to see a great family Dr. read more

He is the BEST DOCTOR I've ever gone to. Won't ever change doctors. So much knowledge and integrity

In the past, I have had to wait between 60-90 minutes (time in waiting room and patient room) to see Dr.Cox. This was about 4 different visits. Very frustrating! But, against better judgement, I decided to give it another try. I had a scheduled appointment, but the office called a week ahead of time and asked if I could come in the next day. I agreed to come earlier than planned and when I arrived, the lady at the window shuffled around paper and after 4-5 minutes finally looked up at me and in a hostile way said "do you have an appointment?!". I replied yes and she very unpleasantly replied again with "sit down and I'll be with you soon". If she was crazy busy it would have been one thing, but I was the only one in the waiting room and no one other patient in sight at the time. Another woman in the office came up and shared that the first Lady was usually just the 'checkout person'. The second lady was very pleasant, but first one needs serious customer service training. Bad start, I could easily overlook that...but then it got worse with sitting in the waiting room for almost 40 minutes. I only saw one other patient come in the door during that time and they were called in within 5 minutes. The rest of the time, it was me alone in the waiting room. I finally told them that I would be leaving. I was told to wait a minute and then was told that I should be next and Dr. Cox was behind due to giving flu shots (to who??!!) --there was none else there! And why did they ask me to come in on this day instead of my scheduled appt if he was so busy?? As I left, I decided I would never put myself through that again--never going back there! This next part is what made me decide to share my experience with others. A week later, I got a bill for 'no show' for my frustrating time in Dr.Cox's office. WHAT?! I called and the insurance person said that Dr. Cox is the one that decided to bill me--since they told me I should be next when I shared that I was leaving after 40 minutes of waiting. I wondered what 'next' meant since I obviously was 'next' for 40 minutes since it was only me in the waiting room all this time??!! I wasn't about to wait 5, 10, 20 or who knows how many more minutes. The insurance person said he was busy today and should hopefully call me by tomorrow. Once I had to call this office for a Rx refill and was on hold for 25 minutes and finally hung up. Surely there are doctors offices that value their patients more than this. read more

Dr Cox and Dr Russel (same office) are the best doctors I have ever been to. I went to them for years and only stopped because United Healthcare kicked off individual plans in TX so I had to get Vista Insurance. I hope they accept my insurance soon so I can go back there... even though the office is far from North Austin, I have sent my family and all of my friends to them and they are very happy with them as well so it's worth the drive! I never leave there feeling like I have wasted my money or time. Thanks for being awesome! read more

My daughter had her first appointment with Dr. Cox just last week. We had been seeing another Dr. at Austin Regional Clinic but hadn't been back for her 15 or 18 month check ups because we were so frustrated with the service at ARC and were desperately looking for a new pediatrician. I found a recommendation for him on a natural parenting website and we made an appointment soon after. The receptionist was very friendly over the phone when I called to make an appointment, I also ended up talking to his nurse to make sure they accepted non-vaxing/vaxed patients. She was shocked that I'd even ask as she said that is totally a decision left up to parents. She was super nice and informative, and let me know all about their policies for appointments and no-shows, etc. She also said that one of the 4 Dr.'s in the practice are always available after hours for phone calls and questions. I was so ecstatic about this because it is partially why we stopped going to ARC! At my daughter's actual appointment last week we were greeted by a friendly receptionist. The wait time was a little long and they seemed pretty busy, but soon we were in with a nurse who was great with my little girl. The worst part of the whole appointment is that we waited probably about 45 minutes in the room until Dr. Cox actually came in. At first I was angry but then figured it probably wasn't intentional. When he finally did come in we gave him a smile and he was SUPER apologetic and thankful for our understanding him taking so long. He was absolutely great with my daughter and she took to him very well. We refused all the vaccinations except for the flu vax because they have the preservative free one. He respectfully asked me why we chose not to vax, gave me his arguments on why we should, was very friendly about it, and promised to still love us if we still didn't vax. When we still decided not to he said he had to let me know he disagreed, but it was okay. I totally loved his take on everything. He made me feel very comfortable about asking questions and didn't make me feel crazy for having the beliefs that I carry. He is also super pro-breastfeeding and seems to be a high supporter of extended breastfeeding; and also he is the first pediatrician to tell me he and his wife ALSO co-slept with their children. AMAZING! My cousin who is a Dr. has been telling us from the beginning to get our daughter out of our bed and into the crib so I was very shocked and happy to hear the opposite from Dr. Cox. The best part of Dr. Cox and his practice (and what caused me to get on yelp and write this review) is that you can call after hours and actually talk to a real live doctor! We called tonight and promptly were connected with a call center who took our information and told us Dr. Cox was available for calls. He called us back quickly and was very helpful and comforting. He was not quick to prescribe any medication or recommend over-the-counter medicine like I'd experienced with other after-hour calls to ARC. In the past I'd get a nurse from out of state who read to me from a book! Another awesome thing is that he made me feel welcome to call anytime, no matter what- exactly what a mother of a toddler needs to hear! I would definitely recommend Dr. Cox to anyone. It is great that he is at a family practice so anyone can go, not just kids. I plan on scheduling my yearly check up with him sometime in the near future. Great family doc for my wife and newborn. I have yet to get sick and need him, but still go to all apts with my wife for our son. No complaints about the staff either. We have BCBS PPO and all claims have been filed as in network, timely and correctly to my knowledge. Dr. Cox has an excellent bedside manner, his office seems to always run on time and he never rushes through my wife's MANY questions. He has also made a an excellent reco for a specialist that my wife needed to see and now loves. read more

He is someone that remembers you from the last visit and doesn't treat you like the "next one" for the day. I highly recommend Dr. Gox. He is our family doctor and is just as nice as can be. I had no issues with the staff at all. I did have to wait more than 10 minutes, but I think that is to be expected when you go to the doc. I didn't feel rushed at all. He answered all of my questions (and I had lots) and gave me some free samples to try. Dr. Cox has been my family doctor for a long time. Dr. Cox himself is a great doctor, but in the past I've had serious issues with his staff. Luckily, I haven't had any issues with his office recently (I'm writing this in 2012). The good: Dr. Cox is a great doctor. He takes a holistic approach to treatment: he really listens to you, he figures out the root cause of your problems, and he really tries to give you a good solution. Plus, his "bedside manner" is great. The bad: He's only a great doctor if you can get an appointment with him. He is sometimes booked for months in advance. Because of the issues I've had with his PA and nurses, I wouldn't book an appointment with anyone in his office other than him. But in 2009, his PA made a mistake on an order form, which nearly cost me a lot of money. When Dr. Cox found out, he set it straight. Then I started getting bills for services that were already paid for. Every time I called them to remind them about the error, they'd research it and tell me I won't receive another bill for it. But sure enough, I'd get another bill for it six months later, and I have to call again and plead my case. There were debacles over nearly everything I did with his office previous to 2010. In my recent dealings with him (2012), I've been happy with his services. I hope that my recent success dealing with him is due to the fact that his staffing issues have been resolved. read more

I first came to Dr. Cox because another doctor said I was depressed, there was nothing wrong with me and I should be reading Harry Potter. Basically calling me a hypochondriac. Fed up, I was ready to be defensive until Cox discovered that I not only had gall stones, but they were infected and needed to be removed. Since then, yes, office staff has come and gone. I don't know if you realize it, but a doctor's office has to be 100 percent on the ball all the time. I know it is getting better because I've been seeing Cox for a lot longer than 10 years and find that recently, his staff seems more professional and on the ball than any place I've been. He makes changes as needed, seems to keep up with both technology and with medicinal practices and actually _listens_ to his patients. Definitely a rarity these days. I've heard horror stories about doctors so distracted that they ask the same question three or four times and don't seem to hear the answer. Cox is WITH you when he's there and in the moment, his attitude atypical because he's pleasant and communicates with you in terms you can understand, doesn't talk down to you and welcomes a dialog about alternatives and possibilities. He doesn't sing, any more, but I think that's because of the complexity of information sharing and a responsibility to keep everything up to date ALL the time - something that takes every moment of his day to handle (and then mentally process and report). Complex information is nice to be able to review, but the documentation, review and reporting process is also more complex and extremely time consuming, particularly because doctors these days are content providers as well as diagnosticians and have more accountability than ever. I feel lucky to have him as my doctor. Simply, excellent doctors are hard to find. So hard that I come all the way from Bastrop, Texas to see him (a 45-minute drive WITHOUT traffic) and the trip is always worth it. Oh, yeah. My usual doctor was out of town, My bronchitis turned worse, into pneumonia and I was told to go to another doctor or emergency clinic. I chose Dr. Cox as our family physician because he is known to be attachment parenting friendly, an alumni of my husband's alma mater (gotta support fellow Owls), and I live close by. He has a great bedside manner. He's chatty and friendly. Five stars for that. I've been unimpressed with his actual medical services, though. The first time I saw him for a specific complaint -- a knee injury -- he told me I had a torn meniscus and gave me some rehab exercises. I had to follow up with other doctors to tell me what my problem was (there was no tear, just muscular imbalances). He often doesn't know answers to my medical questions, which is fine. My ob/gyn often doesn't either. But she looks into them and her nurse calls me back once she has an answer. Dr. Cox will say "I don't know that" and leave it at that. Another time I had to get a medical release for my son to attend school. I absolutely could not get them to sign a paper saying my son was healthy enough. I dropped it off in person and within a day no one had any idea what I needed/requested. The last several times I've gone to see him or his PA, I've had to wait in the waiting room for over an hour. And these were not even end-of-the-morning or end-of-the-afternoon appointments. The staff gives me the usual vague "oh, it should be soon" but then half an hour will go by... nothing. It's bad enough that doctors' offices don't respect patients' time, but they don't even give you the courtesy of being honest. I love my ob and my son's neurologist, and I know I'm going to be in their offices for 3-4 hours every time I have an appointment because of ridiculous wait times, but I put up with it because they are great doctors. I'm sorry to say I don't think Dr. Cox is good enough to be worth the hassle of blocking out my entire morning for a scheduled 15 minute appointment. read more

Unfortunately we can't go there anymore because they don't accept our insurance but when we did go there, I seriously was so over the moon with him and his staff. He is awesome and when we went there for my son having ITP, he immediately knew what it was and the next day sent us to Dell Childrens with an awesome hematologist and got him fixed right away. I hope one day they will accept our insurance because I would go again in a heart beat!! We went there for 3 years and I hope to go back again!!! read more

I was so impressed with him and his demeanor that I immediately changed my personal physician. He is extremely polite, attentive and always has a smile. I'd rate Dr. Cox 6 stars out of 5 if the Yelp system would allow it...... But the administrative staff than manages phone calls, scheduling, etc.... gets ZERO points! EVERY time I've had to contact Dr. Cox I have to go through a mindless hold process. I person that eventually picks up the phone seems exasperated - then places me on hold.... Which then can last more than 10 mins. I've just shared my experiences with "Donna" (Office Mgr). She acknowledged there are problems - asked me a few questions re: whether I (as a long time patient of Dr. Cox's) would prefer an 'automated' call processing system. My response is that it's up to them to figure out what would work best - but that the current system is BROKE!!! read more

My husband had been happy with Dr. Cox for a couple of years until he was seen for chronic headaches. He was prescribed medication to take daily without getting to the root cause. He decided to see another physician and found out that daily neck exercises was the answer and hasn't had any headaches since. read more

I've been going to Dr. Cox for about three years. He's no-nonsense yet friendly and he cares about the patient. He's current in the field but is willing to say he's not sure. Sometimes he's a fraction busier than I would like, but I've never been rushed out of the office before I'm done with my questions. Meanwhile, Dr. Russell has served as an excellent back-up if/when needed. Finally, I've NEVER had a problem with the staff, from the front desk to the nurses. Dr. Cox is a great doctor. Very professional and up to date with medical knowledge. Also, Dr. Smith, in the same office, is awesome. Both great bedside manner. Office staff: All but the billing lady, Cynthia, are Great! She, (Cynthia) is rude, unprofessional and a poison to the clients in that office. I have spoken to her three different times. All three times, she would smile and say insulting, rude remarks to me. I would hope that she wasn't having a bad day on all three occasions. The other ladies in the office are so nice and helpful. Not a fan. I had such high hopes, but it didn't work out. I went to Dr. Cox wanting to find out if I had any food allergies. Dr. Cox refused to do allergy testing and told me to just eliminate food that I think I might have issues with. I don't feel it is necessary to have an extremely strict diet if there is no reason to. I was just hoping to get some answers and I was basically blown off. On top of that, Dr. Cox strongly recommended I move my prescriptions from Walgreens to HEB. I agreed bc I go to HEB all the time. Big mistake - they take FOREVER to get your prescription bc there is always a long line. Once I finally got to the front, they only had one prescription, not the 2 that had been ordered. I called Dr. Cox's office and they said that they see that Dr. Cox ordered it, so they didn't know why HEB didn't have it. I asked if they could just send it again bc there was obviously a miscommunication. They agreed, but said that it would be a $5 charge to ME because they were having to do something extra for me. How is this "extra" to make sure that the prescriptions that THEY ordered were actually received by the pharmacy?!? I was already unhappy with Dr. Cox, but the charge to clear up a prescription miscommunication between the doctor and the pharmacy (that was not my fault in any capacity) was what broke the camel's back. They came across to me as a nickle and diming facility who only cared about money and not the patient. read more

I am a new patient of Dr. Cox, though my Father is a longtime patient. He is a very sincere Doctor and really listened as I described my issues. He also understood I was one of the uninsured and wrote his prescriptions so as to take best advantage of the local pharmacy's programs. I have been to and had many docs in Austin over the years, and Dr. Cox is stellar in comparison. Also the location is easy to get in and out of, plenty of parking and hill country views. Dr. Cox is great, but I do have to agree, his office staff doe's seem a bit confused and befuddled by the simplest of questions or requests. read more
