The arrived on time and the were fast, competent and carful with my belongings! I'd definitely use them again!

Mr Barr that owns this company, reached out after a negative review was left and acted as if he was interested in making the broken television right. We sent the serial number as requested. He finally reached out to my parents today and has said he would not be making it right after all. He said that because 3 days had passed he felt we didn't report it in a timely fashion. This was a new build home and my parents are elderly so we had to find a company to hang the television which was when the damage was discovered. I was kind enough to not mention the grease stains all over the brand new carpet which came from the moving truck leaking on the new concrete and the movers walking through it but now-I see no reason to be kind about it. Sir, you should know I was there the entire move and I know exactly what happened, I set up the television being installed and that was the fastest it could be done. Shame on you for taking advantage of elderly people. read more

I requested that twice prior to the move and twice during the move that they use cloth to protect my sofa from damage. After being assured by management that they would, I was dismissed and ignored during the day of the move. I directly said, you need cloth, not clear plastic wrap. Now my white sectional is torn and blackened. Absolutely ruined it. Management never called me to follow up. The on site lead, even had the nerve to brush his hand over one of the marks and told me it would clean up okay. More like scoundrels and carpet baggers than gentleman! read more

These guys are a bunch of incompetent, disrespect people who are not out to do anything but fleece you out of your money. I hired them to move a business into storage. They had no one on the job who could give any directions. It was obvious that they had little to no experience moving anything. They walked around a large portion of the day eating, smoking cigarettes and talking on the telephone. I wish I could post the pictures of how they threw my items into storage. They walked off the job after I started to complain about their lack of professionalism. The owner called and the Gentleman I hired quickly showed his true colors. They held the items they had taken out of my restuarant as hostage until they could extort money from me that they certainly didn't deserve. Then the thugs pranced around in the parking lot bragging about their outrageous behavior. I had to hire another company to move the rest of my things. Please do not waste your time and especially your money. My opinion, they are simply crooks. Worst business experience I have ever had. It was awful. read more

These guys are terrible period. Just a small sample of items they broke or scratched up with even considering fixing or replacing. Robert the owner and Sam Stevens did not even consider fixing my furniture. And these are not all of the scratched up items. This happened in March and still no resolution. I want people to know what type of company you are dealing with. Proof is in the pudding! He doesn't care about your hard earned dollars you put into your furniture. He wants to charge your CC and run to the next house. read more

Gentlemen movers moved my mother from Lexington to Atlanta. She was very impressed with their service and work ethic. I met them on the other end - in Atlanta. I can't say enough nice things concerning the men who came. They took such care with her belongs. The best experience I've had with movers. read more

These guys were polite and worked hard, Robert, the owner, is top notch. Big concerns with pieces I specifically asked to be carefully packed and protected were not even wrapped or covered, just placed in the truck. Glass shelves from my china cabinet were not packed carefully and now two shelves are missing. They did not put furniture pieces back together, just placed them in rooms. Biggest frustration was when I watched them drop a nightstand off of the hand truck, they picked it up, scooped most of the belongings back into it, did not tell me it had been dropped, and put it in the house. The top is seriously damaged. So, now I'm down one of a pair of nightstands and my china cabinet is unusable until I have new glass shelves made. read more

Rip Off! Not sure how this company has lasted 17 years as the owner states on the companies website but I guess if customers who have received poor service or received unethical practice by the company don't submit written complaints I guess the company will continue to operate as if it were a company that people should consider for their moving needs. My wife and I were provided a written estimate of approximately $1,500.00, (two trucks, 4 men) after a walk through of my home by a company representative who was supposed to have been evaluating how much it would cost to move our furniture and goods approximately 4 miles from our home to a storage facility. My wife and I boxed up virtually all of our home goods that could be placed in boxes in an attempt to avoid additional charges by the moving company. We also purchased our own boxes, wrapping paper, bubble wrap and tape. The movers didn't arrive with any boxes or additional items one would expect professional movers to have. We were given a time and date that the movers would arrive at our home but shortly before the move we were asked by a company representative to change their agreed arrival time to approximately 2 hrs later after our initial agreed time. The movers that arrived were polite and respectful while in our home (Gentlemen). Due to the 2 hour delay one of the movers said they had to leave to get back to the office and all our property that they had placed on their trucks would have to be transported to the storage facility the following day and they would have to take our items that were on the trucks with them. We hated it but we had little choice but to allow the movers to leave with our furniture and other items and return the following day and meet me at the storage facility which was approximately 4 miles from my home. The following morning 4 of the same movers from the previous day arrived at the storage facility with our property. However while moving items within the storage facility it began to rain so a couple of the movers said they would wait to see if the rain cleared up before they continued moving our home goods. If the rain did not stop they would have to move the items within the storage facility another day. The rain did clear up shortly later and the movers were able to move the items within the storage facility. Once the move was complete I was told by one of the movers I owed them $2,800.00. $2,8000? How did you come up with that? I was told that I was being charged from the time their two trucks left their home company until the job was completed. I was also being charged for the time during the rain delay in which they had to wait to move my furniture as well as the hours that they requested a delay in their arrival to my home the previous day. I showed them my emailed estimate from a company representative who conducted the walk through of my home but was told by two of the movers that the person who gave you that estimate made a mistake, you owe $2,800.00. To say the least I was flabbergasted. While I was asking how did they come up with the amount owed, the demeanor of at least one of the movers that were telling me what I allegedly owed them changed. The Gentlemen Movers had become the Bill Collector Movers/Enforcers (Un-Gentlemen). One of the movers became very antsy and adamant I owed more money. He said I was supposed to be charged for this, this and this. It appeared to me that the movers had significant control of how much customers are charged and had a significant stake in increasing their time worked as well as adding additional costs to the customer. My wife and I spoke with the alleged owner over the phone and told him that we were being charged significantly over the estimate we were quoted. Of course that conversation didn't change much, especially with one of the movers constantly stating I should be charged for the time they left their home base, rain delay, and time from the previous day that they were not even at home. After speaking to the owner for several minutes we ended up agreeing to pay $2,300.00. $800.00 more than the original estimate. I would not have used this company if they had gave me an estimate over the original estimate. Makes me wonder if the original estimate was intentionally given in an attempt to persuade us to use their company and later charge us significantly more once the job was completed. A 4 mile move to a storage unit was expensive. We had a budget that was blown out of the water. I would not recommend this moving company for several reasons, especially to individuals living on a budget; individuals that don't like deceptive practices; individuals that would like their movers to wear a mask while in their home; and veterans. read more

Just moved from Columbia, SC to Just outside of Atlanta, GA. And to say I'm impressed is an understatement. I moved my things from my two bedroom apartment to a one bedroom. They have my stuff loaded in the truck in 45 mins. All safely packed. They were on time, kind and friendly. We arrived to the destination at the same time and they unloaded my things just as fast in perfect condition. I spoke with a lot of other moving companies before I chose Gentlemen Movers. Sam just made me feel comfortable and answered all my questions. Didn't feel like he was trying to weasel me out of my money so I went with my gut and chose these guys. So glad I did! Thank you! read more

I would not recommend Gentlemen Movers to anyone that values there personal items, time and money. I hired them to move me from Irmo to Chapin in a very simple move. I came to selecting them for my move as they seemed very professional, sent me a formatted written estimate which to be fair was a little bit higher than the other quotes I received but felt the service made it ok I thought. That was the last positive experience I've had with them since. The day of my move they showed up at my old house later than we had originally planned and that would come into at when they gave me the invoice after everything was all completed. The 2 guys that came seemed professional although they worked very slow almost like it seemed like they were trying to pad the time. They finished up loading the truck then we headed to the new house. It took me right at 20 minutes to get there and I expected it to take them longer but almost an hour was not a reasonable time. This is the real issues happened. They were unloading the washing machine first and did drop it going up my stairs. Stuff happens and that really didn't bother me but how they handled the situation was what bothered me. The 2 guys were fighting and arguing about it the entire rest of the time at my house. At one point i come out to the truck to see how much more that have at they are wresting in the truck which is costing me more money. They finish up and one of the supervisors comes to my house to take a look at the damage and go over the bill. They over charged me on time saying they started when they left there office but again they added over an hour to the time but based off the time stamps on the phone calls from them they couldn't have left when they said they did. We did get part of the time fixed although they still over charged me time for when they were fighting and arguing and not working. We were talking about $100 worth of time they over charged me and would not correct it. They did send out a company to paid the wall and fix most of the damage to my house, the guy was able to touch up the hard wood stair case that was damaged and it looks ok and the wall is great. What they did not do is fix my $1500 washing machine that was dropped. The cosmetic damage to it, the soap tray does not go in correctly and luckily we use pods so that's not a issue but the machine is not balanced properly now and shakes violently when in use since they dropped it down the stairs. I has not had a return call from the owner or Sam who is the office manager since setting up the painters over a month ago. Do not use them, they will not follow up on issues, over charge you and even charge you more than the quote and try to hold you hostage on payment for work they did not do on time or respectfully of your property. read more

I've known Robert with Gentlemen Movers for over 9 years and have referred many clients (mostly seniors) to Gentlemen Movers for their packing and moving needs. They have always been responsive and professional and my clients have been extremely happy using them. They recently helped one of my clients move from downtown Columbia to Lexington with only a few hours notice. Gentlemen Movers is an excellent company! read more

Lack of professionalism I can deal with; I mean it's a moving company, so what can you expect? The poor management, incompetence, and shoddy customer service is what I have trouble with. I was charged more than double the estimated amount for my move to the upstate (and the estimate is in writing). At the end of move-in day when they said they were finished I realized almost a third of my items were missing, including most of my larger items. On the day they were supposed to deliver the remainder of my items they failed to show up and did not let me know until midafternoon resulting in a completely wasted day waiting for them. My belongings were handled carelessly resulting in missing, dirty, and broken items; and the compensation given did not even cover the replacement value of one damaged item. One star is too generous, but zero stars was not an option. read more

We hired gentlemen movers for our recent move. Initially contact back was slow to get a quote but they were recommended by our realtor so we hired them anyway. The move seemed to be going ok besides some hiccups on our end with closing but halfway through the move a significant amount of cash was noticed missing from our lock box and the box was opened. I had specifically locked it prior to the move. Initially Robert was sympathetic and we filled a police report regarding the missing money. We were told that the lost cash did not affect our business deal with them which I NEVER ONCE disagreed with. While they still had our belongings they demanded full payment before they would deliver the rest. Essentially holding our stuff hostage they claimed this was normal which we discovered later was a lie when they told us they did it on purpose to ensure they got paid. Again I NEVER said I wouldn't pay. In fact once they requested payment I paid immediately. We asked if the would please submit a claim to their insurance regarding the lost money. Then they became unresponsive. Today we were told they are not bonded for theft. Robert also accused US of taking the cash because we were "hard up" due to issues with closing. I will never recommend this company and I don't recommend anyone else use them. They have people working for them that have no problem stealing and the owners apparently have no issue maligning their client's character. What hurts the most is that the money was a gift from my mother right before she passed away. We will survive without it. The money was being saved to do something in her honor. But now her last gift to me was stolen and instead of this company having an ounce of empathy ( even if we never got the money back) they instead decided accuse us of stealing it. These are not kind people and I wish we never hired the read more

This is a great company. They worked with us on a tight deadline. The crew was very fast and friendly. They moved us out of the old house and into our new house. STAY AWAY! As others have reported, expensive equipment was thrown into boxes without packing supplies or order to them. There was NO communication as to arrival time or what we could expect. Mr Marye apparently sees no need to communicate with his clients or his own crew. This means that we did not know if they were going to show up on the specified date and his uninformed crew was hostile about packing. Most importantly, we stood by horrified as they broke the dining room table through sheer carelessness before it even left the house! When my friend called Mr. Marye to discuss options, he HUNG UP on him. There was no invoice. Mr. Marye simply added on charges which, of course, we will dispute. To date, Mr. Marye has not responded and we have no table for meals at our new place. This company needs to be put out of business. read more

I hired Gentlemen Movers to move my household belongings from my home and store them for a period of 3 months while my new home was being built. Little did I know that some of my things would come up missing and nearly everything I owned was damaged. They also stored my things in a facility where everything I owned and every box was infested with mice. I had mouse feces and urine on everything from silverware thrown in a box to all my clothing stored in wardrobe boxes. This is a very small statement of how bad my situation was. Every box I opened reeked of mouse urine. This all happening in my BRAND NEW home. I contacted Robert Marye (the owner) early in the unpacking process. He came to my home to check out my complaint. At that time there was only a small tip of the damages. He has not attempted to follow up with me and has completely denied any responsibility for the mouse problem. I spent the first two weeks of unpacking cleaning up the mess laundering and sanitizing everything I unpacked. It has not only cost me an additional expense (to replace the items I couldn't use) but more work than I should have had. I have lost family photos that have been urinated on and family pieces that cannot be replaced. They advertise to be a professional company but there wasn't anything professional about how they moved my things. Several items weren't even wrapped in paper but just thrown in a box. They only had to move my things from storage to my new home which was a short distance of maybe five miles. They only have a one star rating simply because I had to click at least one. I would give them a 0. read more

I dealt mostly with Michael Nicholson, the general manager. Moving is such a stressful time and Michael put me at ease. I've used the company twice now. We had Gentlemen Movers move us out of state. They damaged walls, furniture, floors, and many of our house hold items. We did every thing we could to resolve this matter with the owner. He ignored emails and phone calls. This was a 2500 square foot home, and the damage total exceeded the cost of $4,800 moving charge. We sued owner Robert Mayre and his company and won a judgment in the Pontiac Magistrates Court. However, it is unlikely we will ever see this money. (over $4,000) What saved us was video, pictures and copies of all communication with the business. Beware of this individual and his company. Moving is difficult enough. read more

Deceitful business owner. Added additional charges after initially agreeing to a fixed price; failed to evaluate the amount of furniture that needed to be moved prior to moving us; did not provide enough manpower to accomplish our move; said move would only take 2 days, but took 3 days instead; charged our credit card without informing us; left oil stains on our driveway at our new home; we had to pay others additional funds due to the unwarranted move delay; move was not what we expected. You are taking a risk if you use them! Veterans Beware! read more

We had a small move. The boxes were haphazardly packed and our preparation was negligent.....long story there. The 3 men never complained and offered to help however they could. We were not clear that the destination would result in a second story location and therefore did not communicate with the company. Yet, the movers never hurried and took great care with our things. They efficiently utilized the perimeter of the elevator to make the move as quick as possible without inconveniencing the other residents. They alerted us to a cracked mirror frame that we were unaware of so that we would be prepared if it worsened, But they took great care in wrapping it, resulting in no damage. The final invoice was quite reasonable. Gentlemen Movers is the perfect name!!! read more

We hired company for in state move. Items were a day late-many items were damaged (chairs, tables, beds etc....)including our 55" flat screen TV which was crushed (they did replace this)-items were left behind and not delivered until a week later-agreed procedures for leaving items in drawers to avoid packing and unpacking were not adhered to-unprotected light bulbs were packed with kids items and all had to be washed. Dress clothes were all thrown in the bottom of a box etc....when these items were reported the owner was very difficult to deal with, acted as if this was of our doing and even commented "what do you want me to lose money on this job". After much argument and the company already charging our card and very little compensation on their end we are now just moving on, but wanted to warn others to avoid this same situation. read more

Bait & switch pricing! The initial 'Estimator employee' provided per hour quote, then email quote provided per hour rate quote (along with a 'range' for total job), and website provides 'per hour' estimates. The quote we got had 2 men + truck for $95 per hour, plus $150 out of state fee (move from Midlands in SC to Charlotte NC). The actual total hours were 10 hours ($950 + $150). The invoice was $1500 'FLAT price.' A flat price was never discussed verbally or by the email quote, but the owner told me 'that the way he prices for out of state.' The final price was at least 25% higher than estimated. It should have been about $1100 total - but it was $1700 total. read more

Very unorganized company. We set up a move with them for 8 a.m. A few days later they called and asked if we could change to 11 or 12. We agreed and they told us they wouldn't charge us for the initial travel time. On move day they had not arrived at 1:20 p.m. so I tried to call to see what was up. I got voice mail at both listed numbers. I got a call back about 20 minutes later with an apology and a call back with e.t.a promise. We had originally asked for 3 movers, about 2:15 2 movers show up, and I ask what was up and one asked me if I had just called for the move today. They then proceeded to tell me this was a 3 or 4 man job and we would have to reschedule. I told them that I wanted them to move some stuff over and have them get the rest the next day. At 4:50p.m they were done with 1/2 our living room and 2 beds and a kitchen table . Guestimating the bill to be around 250.00 for the day I get told its 354.00 because of travel back time and 65.00 for an oversized piece of furniture. Needless to say I was angry. The next day 3 guys show up and move another 3rd of our furniture because a bunch would be 65.00 extra for weight and size. This included washer and dryer...... fridge...... . The only reason I gave 2 stars is that the movers were friendly at least. Use 2 men and a truck. read more

This company is absolutely awful! These movers showed up to our house in columbia, SC, & after a few hours of packing, they realized they needed another truck. They were originally suppose to bring 2 trucks mind you. After waiting almost 3 hours for them to return with the second truck, they were able to finish loading. They get to TN the next day, where unloading was a joke. At one point one the the men left to go get at hotel room leaving the other 3 men meanwhile complaining about how the owner needs to get them at least 2 hotel rooms. They finally finished, we signed the final bill, wrote them a check for the total amount, we tipped the guys generously, & that was it. 4 days later they said that their driver miscalculated the bill, & that we owed them $400. There was no itemized costs in the initial receipt, & what we paid was within the quote they gave us. We did not believe we owed them anymore money! Then, one night we are laying in our bed, & we hear a crack. We lifted the bed up & there were wooden support beams completely missing along with bolts as well. We thought we will call it even with these crooks, & not file a claim on our damaged bed & we would not pay this random $400 charge they say we owed them. 3 months later they contact us regarding the $400, & we try and try to call them back letting them know we do not plan on paying this bogus charge... No return call. A few days after this a charge was placed on my credit card for $416 without my authorization! The only reason they had my credit card information was to secure the move date. Please please please do yourself a favor and do not use this moving company! read more

I could not recommend this company after my experience with them. They showed up late both days that they were scheduled to work. While the moving crew were friendly and courteous they were not careful with our belongings. Every piece of furniture showed damage after the move. We were so busy with moving into our new house I neglected to inspect the furniture before signing off on the paperwork. The crew left and it wasn't until the next day I started realizing that all the furniture had been damaged. I assumed signing off on the move gave up my rights to file a damage claim. I figured I would live with the damaged pieces I had discovered. As the days went on I started realizing that not just a couple of pieces were damaged, EVERY PIECE OF FURNITURE had damage. I took pictures of all and sent them off to the manager/owner. He got back to me and promised to send someone out to have a look even though the 4 days had passed that the company allows damage complaints. I thought this was good and was impressed that they were concerned about their clients. Well this turned out not to be true. After several emails and phone calls back and forth it was obvious that this companies management lies to their clients. This gentleman had no intentions of looking over the damage and making good on his promises. Gentlemen Movers management is anything but....... read more
