He experiences extreme stress during vet visits and even with medication, the clinic was unable to perform a full exam at his August 2024 visit. At that time, I was told sedation would be required for any formal exam, which I did not feel was appropriate given his age, stable health, and lack of symptoms. When I called last week to pick up his prescription food (which he was running low on), I was told I could not purchase it without an annual visit. I explained that I could bring him in, but he had no gabapentin left and asked if I could obtain some prior to the visit to safely transport him. I was told no medication or prescriptions could be provided without an exam--despite the fact that an exam was not possible even when previously medicated. I was offered no alternative solution, no apology, and was instead told to seek online telehealth care. I was also told that previous providers may have "let this slide," but that this clinic was "not breaking the law." His prescription food is not a controlled substance, and withholding both the food and short-term medication needed to safely bring him in leaves owners of high-stress senior pets with no reasonable path forward. This experience felt inflexible, dismissive, and lacking in compassion for senior animals with special needs.
