Someone else noted they have been sold to PE, and it is clear they are now pushing unnecessary procedures (more on that at the end) and treating their clients badly. Their 5 star reviews are from years ago, and I would have given them a similar review when I started with them. I began with this practice 3 years ago, and felt confident in Dr Balin. A combination of personal matters and lack of insurance kept me away for ~18 months. When I went back in July, things had clearly changed. I was asked to fill out new patient information, which I found odd, but I'd been away for a while so, ok. Then, despite having done so in the past, they wouldn't file an insurance claim for me, and said I had to do it myself. It requires codes and whatnot that I didn't have. They said they would provide those, and yet I was emailed a copy of my charge receipt, and had to follow up 2x to get the detailed information. I was kept waiting for over 30 mins when I finally approached the reception desk and asked what was happening. Previously someone would have come over to tell me what was going on. I was barely acknowledged (no eye contact whatsoever), and told my hygienist was running behind. Ok, so you have a job you don't like and you're surly, I can understand that. When I finally do get to the treatment room, there is no acknowledgement that I had been kept waiting 45 mins. (there is a reason I'm detailing the wait -- it's not just the poor client relations) I am there for a routine cleaning. I have had very good teeth all my life, and I take good care of them. So she does some xrays, makes comments to herself but not me, then tells me I need scaling and planing, not just a routine cleaning, and they will start it today. I said, I know what that is and I'm surprised I need it, I don't know if my insurance will cover it, and so I don't want to start it today. She calls in Dr Balin, who says yes, it should be done; your teeth are in good condition but there is bacteria up in the gums. She leaves, then the hygienist says ok, we'll get you prepped. And I'm like hold on, I just came in for a cleaning, I'm not prepared to start on anything today, and can you just do the cleaning? She starts getting all emotional, 'it will be my license if we don't treat you properly,' and basically refuses to do the cleaning, raising the chair to get me to leave. And I don't get out of the chair. I tell her again, I came for a cleaning, I was scheduled for a cleaning, and I'd like a cleaning. Then she tells me she is running behind and doesn't have time to do the cleaning. WHAT??? You kept me waiting 45 mins, you (and Dr Balin I assume) have time to get a scaling and planing underway, and now you can't do a routine cleaning? I remain calm and remind her she kept me waiting 45 mins. She then goes back to talk to Dr Balin. I hear whispers, but not what was said. She comes back, total change of personality, all sweetness and light, and does the cleaning. No one follows up with me about scheduling the scaling and planing, nor do they try to schedule another routine exam and cleaning. It was all very strange. I'm finally writing this review because I just got to another dentist (recommended by a friend) who told me there is no way I need a scaling and planing, nor am I having any signs of gingivitis or early periodontal disease. I sent my xrays in advance (thankfully I got them from Rittenhouse Dentists with only 2 phone calls) He noted that my teeth and bone are in excellent condition, gums are healthy and have some recession but that is to be expected 'at my level of maturity' (61yo). He said some practices work the system so they can bill insurance for a more costly procedure that isn't needed. He shook his head and noted that experiences like mine are why people hate dentists. Between his commenst and the other reviewer's discovery of the PE ownership, my experience now makes sense. Do yourself a favor and find a dentist who cares about clients and the dental profession overall, and not just money.

To Whom It May Concern,…read more I am writing to express my deep concern regarding a recent experience my daughter had during her dental appointment at your practice. Our family has been receiving care at your office for years, myself, my daughter, and my son and we have always appreciated the quality of service. Unfortunately, this recent visit fell far below the standard we've come to expect. When scheduling my daughter's appointment, I spoke with a scheduler on two separate occasions the same day. I was advised to confirm with her new insurance provider whether the visit would be covered, which I did. I then called back and relayed the information I received from the insurance company. At that point, the scheduler took the insurance details to input into your system and proceed with your internal verification process. At no point prior to the appointment was I informed that the visit would not be covered. My daughter was accompanied by her grandmother, who signed a form at check-in without understanding that it was an agreement to pay for a visit that was not covered at all. It was also not explained to her. While I understand that miscommunications can happen, my concern lies more with how the situation was handled during and after the appointment. During the visit, the dentist Dr. Yalch had my daughter call me to discuss a filling and its cost. It was during this call that I was first informed the visit was not covered. I reiterated that she had her insurance card with her and that I had spoken with someone in advance to confirm coverage. Despite this, the conversation with Dr. Yalch quickly became unprofessional. His tone was dismissive and rude, and he ended the conversation with "whatever," which I found highly inappropriate. I calmly ended the call and informed him I would handle the matter with billing and that the filling would be completed elsewhere. My daughter, who is 17, was left feeling extremely uncomfortable. She later told me she felt judged and spoken down to, as if she could not afford the care. This is unacceptable, especially for a minor. Additionally, the receptionist at checkout was reportedly rude and dismissive. Although the dental hygienist was kind and made my daughter feel at ease, the overall experience was distressing. I had requested, through the hygienist, that the bill be mailed to me, as has been the practice for years. Despite this, the receptionist insisted the full amount be paid immediately. I sent my daughter $250 via Cash App to resolve the matter in the moment, but I want to be clear that I am aware of patient rights and that it is entirely reasonable to request billing by mail. As a nurse with over 15 years of experience 10 of which have been with Penn Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, including 5 years in leadership, I am deeply disappointed by the lack of professionalism and compassion shown during this visit. I know the standards of care Penn upholds, and this experience did not reflect them. I will be completing the Press Ganey survey and any other feedback opportunities I receive. I hope this message is taken seriously and used as an opportunity to reflect and improve. No patient, especially a minor, should be made to feel disrespected or uncomfortable in a healthcare setting.

I've consistently had excellent experiences at Penn Dental Medicine on 40th Street and feel…read morefortunate to have found this practice. Because I grew up with quality dental care from trusted family friends, I come in with high expectations, so I don't say this lightly. The care here is outstanding. My first experience was in the student practice, which I genuinely loved. Appointments could sometimes take longer, but the level of attention, collaboration, and oversight was impressive. The energy was fantastic, and it was clear there was a real commitment to doing things the right way. After an insurance change, I moved to the family practice upstairs, and my experience has remained just as positive. The facility is modern and spotless, and the team is kind, professional, and highly knowledgeable. What stands out most is that the guidance always feels patient-first and academically focused, not profit-driven or inclined to recommend unnecessary procedures. It's also worth saying that many people have understandable anxiety or even phobias about dental work, and no practice can completely eliminate that. Dental care can be uncomfortable, but that shouldn't affect how a practice is judged. Sometimes, the most uncomfortable treatments are also the most important for long-term health. In my experience, Penn Dental Medicine handles that responsibility with genuine care, professionalism, and integrity. Across the board, the hygienists are thorough and careful, the dentists are approachable and clearly very knowledgeable, and the fillings and minor procedures I've had here were excellent, fairly priced, and accommodating with scheduling and payment plans. Over time, I've learned a lot as a patient here, and my oral health has improved through better at-home routines. Everyone is friendly, the staff reflects a diverse range of backgrounds, and the whole practice takes care seriously in the best way. I plan to stay loyal to this practice as long as I'm in Philadelphia. Thank you so much!

I sat in the chair for almost 45 minutes and still had not seen the Dentist. In anger, I told the X-ray Technician that I was leaving. She asked me to wait for a minute, and she would see how much longer I would have to wait. She came back and told me that the Dentist was cleaning another patient's teeth and that I would have to wait for anther 15 minutes! By that time, I was boiling mad because I left work earlier and still was not seen by the Dentist. The mannerisms and lack of professionalism was so DISCOURAGING. That's what happens when you go to a dental office in the hood, plain 'ol GHETTO! I would never recommend anyone to that place because they simply don't care. Do yourself a favor and find a REPUTABLE dental office. I should've taken heed when I read all of those NEGATIVE REVIEWS on their website about this place, but I gave them the benefit of doubt which caused me wasted time and effort in trying to have a cavity filled. LEAVE THIS PLACE ALONE UNLESS YOU LIKE WASTING TIME AND BEING IGNORED BY THE USELESS STAFF!!!
