Turns out all the pipes and valves associated with those were old and filled with decades of gunk. So we had everything replaced per their recommendation, which they thoroughly explained before proceeding. They even showed us the pipes after they disassembled so it was clear they badly needed to be replaced! Their pricing was transparent, and we were offered options before they proceeded on the different jobs. Workers (Edgar, Daniel, and one other tech) were friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and left our place clean. They responded to my work request incredibly quickly. They arrived on time, and I appreciated a heads-up notice when they had an ETA with the names and photos of their technicians. That made me feel safer. I wish I read more reviews before booking this place. I had a slow draining sink that they charged **$650** to clear. I had time pressure to get it done that day so I just paid it but it was a total rip off, even if they did snake the pipe. Said it was bc the p trap under the sink was small and offered to update the pipe to a 1 1/2 inch .. for $750....!! Insanity. The guy fixing it was Heron who was great to work with in itself but this business is a total rip off and will not use them again. Also the company is run chaotically by AI agents that create a confusing communication and coordination experience. I should have seen that as a red flag but I was swayed by the overall company rating. TLDR; customer service is run by agents and scheduling + coordinating was terrible. They also use some kind of AI operator so it was impossible to call him while he was at my property and my phone of course thought it was spam. They are not Genteel by any stretch. We had used Genteel a few times in our SF property over the years. We know they charge slightly above other plumbers, but we were okay because we thought they did good work at slightly above rate pricing. Responsive and nice folks. Well, this recent visit took a weird turn and unfortunately, it was not satisfactory. My husband called them because of an emergency a few weeks ago. Our upstairs bathroom sink's handle (one of them) broke off and water was shooting up the ceiling. He tried to shut off the shut-off valve under the sink, but it was stuck, so he had to run down and shut off the main to the house. When Genteel came, they did fix the shutoff valve, but they started adding all types of costs that drove the estimate and final bill up to $2550+. The kicker was that they essentially sold us a new faucet for $800+ and because the cost was mounting as additional issues was "continuously being found", my husband put a stop to it and just paid them $2550+ and told them to leave. Long story short, the main issue wasn't fix, but they did fix the shut off valve and other valve knobs. Sorry if I'm putting wrong technical names as I'm not familiar with all their vocabulary. The real issue is we have a new faucet we couldn't even use because they didn't even connect it due to another set of problems they now found in the wall after they connected the faucet. Hmmm. We eventually got another plumber to fix the wall issue and finally connect the use of the faucet at reasonable costs. I feel like Genteel package themselves well and they are no doubt great at what they do, but unfortunately I am appalled by their crazy pricing. This time I had what I believe is a very standard plumbing need - a kitchen sink that needed hydro jetting - and Genteel refused to give any kind of quote or estimate without a $149 visit to the house. While they apply this cost to the cost of service if the customer chooses to go with them, this tactic just pushes the customer to accept whatever quote. As they would not tell me if their prices would be competitive with other quotes I had gotten, I went with another plumber. We have been very pleased with Genteel plumbing on the whole, over the last few years. We just had our annual draining of the water heater today. Joan and Daniel, were, as usual, professional, courteous and knowledgeable. We have worked with them, and probably most of the team, over the years. It's too complicated to write up in great detail but they had solved an "on again / off again" issue of excess water coming out of the overflow pipe by adding an expansion tank. We had our doubts that is what was needed, and had explored PRV valves, contacting the Water Dept, having inspectors out, etc. But it has not dripped for almost a year -- so that issue, fingers crossed -- has been resolved. Are they high end? Yes. Are they skilled? I guess. Are they honest? Well, let's talk about it. The big winter storm in December flooded my bathroom light well since the pipe from the drain was clogged and it caused the water to seep through the walls of my bathroom and garage. I asked them to clear the drain and change the P trap. It happened to be raining at the time. They cleared the drain and put a panel on top of the light well to keep the rain from coming in through the edge of the light well. They went up through the skylight that went up through the inside of the house to the roof which was not very high and pretty safe. So... I get a bill for $5800 to clear a drain and put a temporary panel on the roof which didn't take more than 45 minutes. One hour max. Yes you read that right. I asked them if they were going to change the P trap like I originally asked and the guy at the office with whom I was dealing said oh sure and made it sound like he was doing me a favor to change it. They told me at the beginning when they gave me the outrageous estimate that they could "include" what work was necessary as part the bill. Keep in mind they did not break down the labor or material costs. They only gave me the general estimate. I never worked before with a company that didn't break down the costs. These people sounded unethical to begin with. They did change the P trap but I thought that the total bill was still excessive for the work done. Now dealing with the very weird guy at the office was very discouraging to say the least since he tried to sound polite while justifying the excessive cost involved. Their title "Genteel" does not match what they represent in how they conduct business in my opinion. Their plumbers were polite and professional but dealing with their management is like getting stabbed with a bayonet and a smile. I tried to reason with the weird guy at the office and he tried to convince me that what they charged was reasonable. He said snooty things like "We are a real company" whatever that meant. I guess he was trying to say that overcharging people was somehow justified because they were a 'real company' and were of quality compared to 'other' companies. It goes to show what possible low opinions they had of other plumbing companies. I guess it was my mistake for accepting the terms although I thought the estimate was flexible from their wording of "we will adjust the cost for whatever work will be done or fit the cost to match the estimate" or something along those lines. I don't remember the exact words but it was basically saying that they would adjust the cost is what I understood but since they do not break down costs showing the materials and labor involved it was suspiciously deceptive in my estimation. The weird guy at the office said at one point: "they risked their lives going to the roof because it was raining" and other nonsense that didn't justify the costs. He then later retracted that statement because he knew he was exaggerating. I do not recommend them at all. It's hard to find a decent, honest plumber or electrician or any tradesman or contractor. Maybe I'll stick to the mom and pop types who seem to be more honest. By the way, they used my hose for the roof and then stole my nozzle. Nice work. read more

Not recommending this company. Most of us need a plumber to be up front and trustworthy because we have a leak and need the problem solved. Daniel came out and said with great confidence that my soaked bathroom floor indicated the leak was coming from a leaking wax seal and their standard rate to replace is $694 (very high for less than an hour's work). After completing the work he proceeded to, in his words, "thoroughly inspect everything" to be sure the leak was resolved. He quickly found a very slow leak coming from the toilet shut-off valve, so for $300 more he could fix that. Genteel Plumbers helped me fix a very hard to find leak today in my property that was behind walls. My technician was Heron and honestly him and his partner were the most helpful guys I had during my whole issue since I had a couple people coming over but none of them were very helpful in explaining me step by step how the diagnosis was going to be. They explained me how for this particular issue diagnising it was going to be the key, meaning where was it exactly and what were the best areas (walls) to open up and in what order to try to find the exact source of the leak. They kept the place extremely clean while opening the walls and kept me updated with every single finding until the root cause was found. They also were very proactive on signaling other areas that didnt have a leak now but were in bad shape and needed maintaince now rather than later.
