We were faithful customers at Mamma Rosa's, but when they closed down in '21, we were left in the lurch and without a neighborhood Italian joint to call our own. We just quit going out for Italian other than for tomato pies, but now we've begun actively looking for a place to enjoy simple Italian food--outside of the ubiquitous tomato pies. Gennaro's was our first stop, with the menu definitely reading more New World Italian than Old World. We started with a couple of appetizers: The Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms in Scampi sauce and the Antipasto Salad. I'm not a fan of Antipasto salads (I've a three item max addition rule for salads and tomato pies), but my wife enjoyed it. It was your standard antipasto salad for the area--perhaps more generous with the meat and cheese than the last one we ordered up the street at Papa's. The stuffed mushrooms had a good flavor, and although the sauce didn't really hit me as Scampi (the garlic wasn't really there), it was still good on its own, and I'd order it again. My wife ordered the Pork Chop Giambotta, which she truly enjoyed. It was a thick, good sized pork chop covered with a sauce that included potatoes, sausage slices, and sautéed peppers. The menu said that the peppers were hot and sweet, but they were pretty much 99.9% hot peppers. If that's an issue for you, I'd make a point in mentioning it to your server first. My wife doesn't do spicy, but luckily I was there to find a home for the hot peppers, and she said she'd order it again if we returned. My Veal Saltimbocca, however, was a letdown. The veal was overcooked and had lost its tenderness, but most surprising to me was that it was very different from the standard version I've known for years. Had I read the description more carefully, I'd have caught the fact it was in a tomato demi-glace rather than the white wine and butter emulsion I know and love. Also, the ham that was used was not the thinly sliced prosciutto one normally sees, instead it was a thick slice of something that I can't honestly tell you was prosciutto or not. The use of spinach instead of a sage leaf wasn't a complete shock, as I've seen that before. Overcooked veal, the prosciutto mystery, and tradition straying aside, the flavor almost bordered on being alright, but it definitely wasn't what I'd hoped for when I placed the order. To add insult to injury, I asked for pasta as my side, and was given a couple choices--I chose the linguini and got served a dente-less spaghetti. When I asked the waiter (who was otherwise extremely conscientious and attentive) if they were out of linguini, I was told that there's really very little difference between the two, which so blew my mind that I just shrugged and ate. While we were there, we could see that there were many people who acted like regulars enjoying their meals, and many of them were also eating tomato pies, however, we're on the hunt for a place that's going to satisfy our need for an Italian place that provides beyond the pizza oven. I'm up in the air about a second shot--my wife was much happier than me with the location (which means we'll likely go), but I'll definitely ask our server more questions about what I'm ordering next time to avoid any surprises. read more

Absolutely fantastic! We celebrated our son's college graduation here, and I cannot say enough good things about the fantastic food and service we received at Genaro's. The ambience is smart casual, and not fussy, but with food and service that you'd expect at a place that charges double the prices. All of the food was top notch. Standouts are the artichoke heart Francese, mozzarella en corrozza, and fried calamari appetizers; and chicken Italiano, chicken marsala, and salmon Neapolitan mains. Their tiramisu and tartufo capped off the meal perfectly. If you're in Trenton or Princeton, Gennaro's is worth the drive. read more

Disclaimer : This review is based on a take out order. I selected the Veal Sorrentino. The Veal Sorrentino sounded mouth watering by the ensemble cast of ingredients listed on the menu (prosciutto, eggplant, mozzarella, light marinara-white wine). Overall, this dish was very disappointing, I couldn't taste any flavor in the meal. Once again, the spaghetti from an Italian restaurant was lackluster as well, this is like ordering a wonton soup from a Chinese restaurant and it not meeting your expectations. We tried a gluten free pizza as well, my girlfriend enjoyed it. I can only describe the pizza being almost like a cracker. This is not neccessary a bad thing but think flatbread pizza, not the type of pizza where you get a nice chewy bite. At $50+ plus dollars between the two items I can say I am glad I gave it a shot but I would not bring home take out from here again, I would give it a try in person though and reevaluate after the experience. I visited this restaurant while meeting up with former coworkers who live in the area. After checking out some reviews, I suggested it to the group and made a reservation, which made getting a table quick and easy. It's a small restaurant, with a separate side of the building dedicated to takeout. The server was friendly and very accommodating to everyone in our party. After looking over the menu, I chose the Chicken Francese. Bread and olive oil were brought out for the table, which was a nice touch. The entrees come with a side salad, which was a great way to start the meal. You can choose between pasta or vegetables and potatoes--I went with the vegetables and potatoes. The entrée was delicious and perfectly seasoned with the Francese sauce, and the chicken was cooked just right. I've had Chicken Francese at several places, and this was easily one of the best I've tasted. Overall, this is a great small Italian restaurant in the area. If the takeout tastes as good as the dine-in food, I'd definitely be happy to bring it home as well. read more

It is a curious thing that I live only a few minutes from Gennaro's yet almost never find myself dining there on my own. Perhaps it is because the meals I have there are so strongly tied to business dinners that my subconscious now associates the place with productivity instead of pleasure. That said, these dinners occur every few months, and I have rarely left disappointed. Our gatherings usually follow a familiar rhythm. A basket of bruschetta appears, accompanied by a simple salad that does its job without fanfare. Soon after come the main courses: ziti, chicken parmesan, and a steak dish, served family style, along with a medley of vegetables to make us all feel marginally virtuous. The food is reliably good, hearty, and satisfying. Every so often the kitchen's enthusiasm for salt outpaces mine, but never enough to spoil the evening. Dessert brings an assortment of pastries and petits fours, which make for a civilized end to the meal. Service is always friendly, professional, and attentive without hovering. The private back room where our group meets is comfortable and well-suited for conversation, a small haven where ideas are exchanged and plates are emptied at roughly the same pace. Four stars because nothing is perfect, but Gennaro's comes close enough for government work. If I ever start dining there on my own, I'll consider that a personal milestone. read more

Went to Gennaro's for dinner while visiting family in Hamilton. We made a reservation, so we were seated immediately after entering. It's a pretty nice restaurant, and it was pretty packed. Service was a bit slow, it took awhile before someone came to take our orders, though they did provide water. Our waitress was friendly and answered any questions we had regarding the food. But it did take long for our food to come out. I got to try the Potato Pizza, the plain Tomato pie, the shrimp scampi pasta, and the artichoke heart francese. Pizzas were OK. I've definitely had better Trenton Tomato Pies in the area. The shrimp on the shrimp scampi was overcooked, but the sauce was good. The artichoke heart francese was an appetizer, but it was my favorite thing. It could have passed for chicken francese with it's excellent texture. read more

First time dining at Gennaro's with another couple. The restaurant is nicely decorated, warm and cosy on a chilly night in early January. What you can expect. Online the restaurant is listed as BYOB. However, upon arrival we were informed that it was not BYOB, as they now had a liquor license. Okay then, please update your website. The server James was good, but not great. He failed to tell us that a salad came with the meal until after the four us had ordered soup, which was a separate charge. It was not a soup or salad choice with meal and nowhere is it listed on the menu. Lentil and a hearty chicken noodle were the soups of the day. Two of us had the lentil and two the chicken noodle. Both were served piping hot, and very tasty. The entrees were a decent portion and all were good, but not outstanding. The hot Italian Bread was very good. Usually don't find good Italian bread at many of the Italian restaurants in the area. This was an exception. Overall, I would rate it 3-1/2 stars out of 5. read more

Gennaro's is nestled in a strip mall on the Robbinsville/Hamilton stretch of Route 33 where there's no shortage of Italian eateries. I would say compared to other area restaurants, they got a bit of an edge in ambiance and atmosphere, which makes them ideal for date night, getting together with friends, or a family meal. They were decorated nicely for the holidays on a recent lunch visit with festive music playing. Meals start off with complimentary bread which is always a decent way to begin a meal. We got a variety of items including garlic bread with cheese, a personal tomato pie, and a chicken parmigiana sandwich. There were no weak points as all the items were fresh and flavorful, prepared using quality ingredients. The garlic bread was delicious and cheesy without being overly greasy. I am not the biggest fan of tomato pies as it's not in my wheelhouse for preferred style of pizza, so I'm not the best judge of them, but all the ingredients were flavorful. It could have used a little more crisp, but was decent nonetheless. While the fries were average, I liked that the chicken parmigiana sandwich had a decent cut of chicken as lots of restaurants have the thinly sliced variety that's mostly breading. The accompanying tomato sauce was robust and meshed well with the chicken, cheese, and bread for a satisfying meal. While nothing was particularly exceptional, the food was solid Italian fare, which is high praise in this area where almost every shopping plaza has a pizzeria/Italian restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We'd definitely return to Gennaro's and recommend them to others looking for Italian cuisine in the Robbinsville/Hamilton area. read more

Great Italian option for small groups! Parking available on both sides of the restaurant. Dining enters from one side and take out the other. Restrooms are unisex and well taken care of! You can dine inside or outside in the patio. There is a private party room inside as well. We got a personal pizza and baked cod. It was quite a bit for the price point! I order from Gennaro's quite often. Tonight I ordered from them and waited an hour and a half after Inordered. I called and was told the driver delivered the food to the wrong address and gave the people my food. so you couldn't call me. They said we can put in another order new order. i said no and asked to money to be put back on my card. I gave that driver more than 20% tip. Gennaros is a mainstay for our family, we absolutely love it! The ambience is so cozy and intimate, the food is consistently amazing, and the cocktails are divine (my faves are the summer spicy anguria/watermelon marg and the pistachio martini? Chef's kiss!).
