I took my Thunderbird in several years ago for a list 5 or 6 of relatively small repairs. He said that he could start it in about a week. After 2 weeks he said that he would start it next week. More time passed. I called again, got voice mail. More weeks passed, I went there and he said it would be ready in a week. Two more weeks passed. I went back, he (apologized, I think) and said it would be ready in a week. 2 or 3 more weeks passed. I went to the shop and he wasn't there. I went by again and he wasn't there. I was furious. After 4 months, I went and got the car. He was rude. Virtually nothing was done. What a horrible experience. read more

Discovered an incredible mechanic today thanks to San Diego Classic Thunderbirds Club we just joined. Genessee Auto Care on Claremont, John Martin. He loves Chevies most but the shop 4 lifts, is half old domestic and half newer cars. He is skilled and very reasonable. I went to have him go over the new Thunderbird as I took the place on the rack from a Falcon Ranchero. He fixed three Japanese SUV AC's while I was there and he taught me Few things. Highly recommend. read more

Genesee Auto Care - 1956 Thunderbird - Auto Repair Near Me - San Diego, California

After 7 months of dealing with an electrical problem, John at Genesee found it, fixed it and car is running terrific. I had John install other parts and at a reasonable price. If you have a problem with your car, John will research and find the problem and fix it. Love this place read more

EXCELLENT shop! John is the BOMB! Knows his stuff and my aqua blue bird is running like a hot-rod.

The best auto service I've ever received -- truly above and beyond! I can't express how impressed and satisfied I am with this auto center. For years, I've been searching for a trustworthy mechanic--someone who would actually take the time to diagnose the real issues, not just suggest unnecessary fixes. This guy took their time, opened everything up, carefully reviewed all the possible causes, explained everything to me clearly, and only then replaced what truly needed to be fixed. It felt like he was working on his own car -- that's how much care and attention he gave mine. I finally feel like my car is in good hands. After years of wasting money on things that didn't solve the problem, this is the first time I've walked away feeling seen, heard, and respected as a customer. If you're looking for honest, professional, and truly thorough service -- this is the place. I'm incredibly grateful. read more

Thank you John for repairing my 1997 Chevy Cavalier. I was informed I had a coolant leak when the car warmed up. Your business was highly recommended .I needed a new radiator, and you were able to get the part the same day. I couldn't be happier with the quality and value of your service. My car is running great. Thank you again. My location is San Diego, not sure why it says San Francisco read more

I called Genesee Auto Care by referral after a really bizarre a terrible 2x experience with a smog shop in Bay Park. John took the time to talk to me over the phone to give me sound and honest advice when he really had nothing to gain by doing so - my car was already repaired and I was ready to clear smog (long story). Regardless, he made me feel SO comfortable throughout our conversations and I was able to bring my car to him to look at as well as have his partner/neighbor perform my smog check. It's super hard to trust others in the auto industry nowadays but I can say that John will have your best interest at heart and lead with honesty. If I need my car repaired, I'll be back here read more

We went in for a Clean Truck Check, required by CARB. I have many heavy duty trucks and pay $60.00 for the check all the time. This location charged us $200 for a 5 minute upload to the California Air Resource Board. When I called Eddie about the price, he said that is the price for one truck. Beware, if you are looking for a CTC tester, he is super expensive! read more

I have a Jeep wrangler that has (up until recently) always been used as more of a desert/adventure toy than a primary commute vehicle. My dad and I worked on the Jeep and took it on trips up until his passing last March. This November, my main car needed to be retired so it was time to promote the Jeep! The Jeep had a check engine light on and a few other problems that had been around for a while, but I had neglected it while grieving the loss of my dad. Luckily my fiancé has been going to John at Genesee Auto Care for over 10 years and highly recommended his work. I called up John and immediately felt in good hands. I took the Jeep to John and he walked me through getting a Temporary Operating permit to make sure I could legally move the vehicle where I needed to without getting it impounded. He then worked on everything that needed to be fixed and communicated incredibly clearly throughout the whole process. I was blown away by how honest, up-front, efficient and kind he and his staff were during the whole process. It is very rare to find someone who is so incredible at their job and continuously takes care of the customer like John and his team at Genesee Auto Care. He put effort into my vehicle as if it was his own, and it meant the world to me. Automotive maintenance is so costly these days, but John kept this repair so affordable I was shocked. I cannot recommend his service and business more. I'll be taking all my cars here for as long as he'll be working on them! 10/10. If you need a mechanic, go to Genesee Auto Care! read more

I was having a very busy day that involved a lot of driving, including taking my toddler to preschool, work meetings, appointments and then picking her up. While I was on the freeway I heard something start dragging underneath my car and when I looked, the plastic panel had come unscrewed. I called Genesee Auto Care from a recommendation, and even though they were very busy and didn't have any appointments available, they told me to come in and they'd fix it for me. I pulled up and they fixed it quickly, knowing I was in a hurry, and didn't even charge me a dime!! I am so impressed with the service, and most importantly the genuine care for my situation. I have found my new auto care service shop and will be coming here from now on for any car needs! read more

John at Genesee Auto Care is my go to auto mechanic and has been for years. He's a magician at diagnosing and fixing problems, his prices are more than fair and he is honest above all. Give him a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

We purchased a classic car for my wife at the top of the pandemic, a 1964 Thunderbird. We had multiple problems with the starter that was causing aggravation and we stopped driving the car. One of my neighbors was walking by and asked why we weren't driving the car. We explained that we were on the waiting list at a different mechanic and had been for 9 months. He immediately told me to call up John and he would get everything fixed properly and reasonably. I called in and set up our appointment for 1 week later, not 9 months. When I dropped off the car I met John and quickly liked and trusted him. He called me in the afternoon and explained everything that he found wrong with the car. I picked it up 48 hours after I dropped it off and they had put the proper starter in it, repaired an exhaust leak, and fixed our leaky air shocks. The car ran like an absolute champ and John's pricing was fantastic. He found lots of loose bolts throughout the car and tightened them all up. We will be customers for life with all of our vehicles. Amazing business! read more

Helped me understand what was wrong with my car, totally honest and very fast service. Will be my go-to place from now on!

Just want to add my 2 cents and say that John and his team are the best! I have had him work on 3 or 4 of my vehicles and all the work is done well and in a timely and efficient manner. But, my favorite part is that, as a single, older mom type, I can TRUST his work implicitly. He is personable and confident and really knows his trade. I have sent friends to him and he always treats everyone well and fairly. Recommend HIGHLY! read more

It's hard to find a mechanic that is completely trustworthy as well as fair-priced. Genesee Auto goes above and beyond for their customers. They have earned my business for life! read more

John & his team are excellent. They always do a thorough job, are prompt, treat me kindly and with respect, and never push unnecessary extra work. They're always busy with a flow of customers, which means many happy returning customers, and new ones via word of mouth, too. They have more work coming their way than they can accept daily! A mark of a great business. So they don't need to push unnecessary work and don't want to, because John has integrity & professionalism and that's reflected in his team. Love this about them. Highly recommend Genesee Auto Care. I am so very grateful to have a high quality, fair & professional auto mechanic here in San Diego. Thanks, John & team! read more

I couldn't be happier with the service at Genesee Auto Care. John did a great job and price was more than fair.

If you are reading this review you are probably searching for an honest and fair automotive repair shop. This is the place you need to go to! John the owner is amazing. Myself, my daughter and my husband had awesome interactions with him. Our car was fixed in a short amount of time, reasonable price and his honest communication is hard to find! I will be driving here from now on from Alpine! read more

John is the best! I moved from Sweden to San Diego for college and have always felt mechanics trying to rip me of. Knowing nothing about cars, it's hard to find someone to trust. My friend found this place and they felt very honest, since they told her she didn't need to fix an issue another mechanic said was urgent. I've been going there for a few years now for service and they're the just great. Always very honest, friendly, affordable, and quick! read more

Awesome service at Genesee Auto Care! They squeezed me into their schedule last minute, and Ozzie even found drove my car to the Starbucks where I was waiting for it to get repaired. Excellent service and a great price. Highly recommend! read more

TRUST & HONESTY....John & his mechanics are so good & honest & straightforward that this simple review won't do them justice, they have helped me with my vehicles for many years and oftentimes John has gone way out of his way to help me out. I trust him more than any professional in any profession bar none ! John has a truly incredible knowledge base which is So Important in diagnosing any vehicle you bring him, and he doesn't forget ANYTHING, if you haven't seen him in months or years he'll remember everything about you and your vehicle when you roll in. He is an ABSOLUTE straight shooter and completely honest and trustworthy. On top of that, John and his staff are great people and fun to chat with when they're free. I couldn't be happier or have greater peace of mind that Genesee Autocare takes care of all my vehicles.. A++++ Yelp review ! read more

John at Genesee Auto Care is THE TRUTH! He's fair, honest and honorable. All the things we want in a mechanic. As a woman, you don't know who to trust under your hood. Lol John took care of me and my car is running like a dream. He won't nickel and dime you and he'll do right by you. I will never take my car anywhere else. My coworker referred me to John and her husband is a mechanic. This says a lot about the character of this man. Thank you, John!!! read more

Super reliable, communicative, friendly, and overall great service. Will be back in for my other vehicle very soon.

Great Mechanics! I had a few things done by them when they were actually *on* Genesee. I went by there today and whoops! They've moved to Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Same thing though, these guys know their stuff. Only problem is there are 3 auto repair joints in the same place, it's hard to find parking. But it's worth dealing with that. read more

My car was making some grinding noises & I was worried that something was wrong with the car's joint(s) or axle. John gave me a quote over the phone for the potential repairs but test drove the car and gave it a thorough inspection to make sure. It turns out the problem wasn't too serious & was easily fixed that day. I also appreciated how he approached any repairs on my car as if it were his own. After addressing the main concern, John recommended a routine brake cleaning & readjusting which my car greatly needed. I appreciate John's friendly, honest and professional business approach. John and his team are excellent & trustworthy mechanics. read more

The most reputable repair shops I have been to. Honest, professional and knowledgeable. Always given more than one option on how to make repairs and expert advice to help you make your choice read more

This review is long overdue. John is amazing! We found him by accident when the neighboring shop was closed, Genesee was opened and John took care of us right away even though it was closing time. Now I'm back getting my brakes checked. He is honest and will take care of you. He explains what's going on and why. There's always a lot of cars here(and there's a reason), but John makes time for you. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews. I'll be coming here for all my car issues from now on! read more

Being a female and trying to find an honest mechanic is hard work. John and his employees were like a dream come true! I came to them right before closing with a problem and they went out of their way to address my needs even with a full parking lot. Additionally they explained to me what was going on and made a plan of how to fix it. I felt comfortable that they were knowledgeable and looking out for my best interests, not trying to tell me to do things I didn't need. They definitely won a new customer today. I am beyond grateful for finding Genesee Auto Care, and will bring my car back the next time it needs attention. Highly recommended. A+++ read more

John and Rich do great work at a reasonable price. Never feel like they are trying to scam me and it probably wouldn't be hard to do as I know little about cars. I have an old car and, at one point, it needed a fix that involved taking out transmission. Cost more than car is worth and John told me that. He suggested a work-around that would keep it running if I wasn't ready to upgrade. That was 2 years ago and it is still plugging along. Definitely recommend! read more

My family has trusted this business for over 20 years. These mechanics are the best of the best and have always been honest and loyal to their customers. His expertise is unparalleled, his attitude is wonderful, he is totally customer-centric, and he really cares for your car and your well-being. He will go out of his way routinely for customers, I see it all the time. He has even taken the time to teach me about what went wrong with my car because he knows I am so interested in cars. Would definitely recommend, and will be going back for oil changes from now on. Easily a 5-star rating. read more

John and his team are honest and knowledgeable, they treated my car and myself with respect and thoroughly explained to me any issues I would need to have repaired.
