Yes, you probably did a double-take on this and it is a peculiar post. You may not notice them, but "generic peanut stalls" are on a lot of sidestreets, walkways, and sidewalks in most high-traffic areas in the city. So what can peanut stalls possibly have of any importance here in this city of 30 million or so hardworking and constantly snacking citizens? (I think I just answered my own question) Well, there are times when I'm either getting off the MRT station, or idly waiting for a jeepney to come along, and sometimes there's a "random generic peanut stall" nearby. For a measly P5 to P20, you can buy anywhere from a pocket-sized brown paper bag to a pouch of any one of four different types of peanuts. There's the "Adobong Mani", or peanuts roasted in the shell, the "Hubad" or "skinned" kind, and two more versions that are much spicier versions of the two, which even come with red chilies. You're probably thinking, "Is that even safe?" I'm thinking yes, it should be, since health regulations for food vendors in the city are quite stringent, and either millions of Manilans are in the clear, or we're all fighting something. Anyway, I've had a bag of peanuts every now and then for years, and I've yet to manifest any symptoms of Food Poisoning or any other nasty bug. As for side effects? I dunno, maybe impaired writing ability coupled with delusions of grandeur, but I have no idea of confirming. Oh, I almost forgot... probably the only plausible side effects from eating these peanuts is one, high blood pressure, since they sprinkle Ajinomoto on them, and two, acne breakouts, no thanks to the liberal use of cooking oil. Gordon Ramsay's meme comes to mind ("There's so much oil on this dish, America wants to invade the plate!") So why even bother with this? For me, the occasional bag of peanuts from any of the many stalls in the city is a lot of things, an opportunity to tune out, sate an "oral fixation", hang with some workmates during a break, and it's a throwback to when I was a kid at school. I remember having a couple while hanging out with my friends after class, me with my peanuts, them with their smokes. Wait, that still happens when I'm with my smoker officemates...! read more
