The room was nice but the check in process was difficult. We also needed to put our stuff in lockers due to the 10 AM checkout and found that process to be difficult. One of the machines did not accept card and the other had a line down the hall. Upon attempting to retrieve our bags inside the lockers, there were issues with them not accepting the code and the workers were quite rude. We asked for assistance and they were upset about the number of lockers they needed to open (as the machine only allowed you to rent one per transaction and we were traveling in a group of five). If you are staying here I recommend not using the lockers and searching for an alternative! read more

The facilities are well maintained and clean. I stayed on the 7th floor and noisy wasn't too much of an issue. Towel is not included. Bathrooms in the rooms are really small and uncomfortable to use but they get the job done. read more

Absolutely love the Generator hostel chain. This is my second and I love it. Bar and clean beds. Nice secure locker. Across street from station and so worth the price! I will always look for the Generator brand!! read more

What a terrible hostel, particularly given the "more than a hostel" price. They spend far more on advertising as a hip place than actually running a decent place. Don't waste your money. Staff was incredibly rude and non-helpful (note to self: dont work at hostel if you hate tourists), the beds and room were unbelievably cramped, the location was quasi-convenient but even wandering around I saw so many better located hostels for anything. The prices and the location are great for a hostel in one of Germany's largest and most lively cities. When you exit the main train station, Generator Hostel is basically right in front of you; ideal for travelers. I payed only 14€ for one night in an eight-bed dorm; perfect for people with a tight budget. The room was very clean and tidy; the sheets were clean and white; and the bathrooms, although very cheaply built and plastic-like, were very clean. The bunk-beds were nicely separated and the air was breathable, unlike other hostels. You also get a locker if you need to securely stow your things away. If you don't have a lock, you can purchase one for only 3€ at the front-desk. The security is really top-notch, from what I've seen. I used to work at a hostel elsewhere in Germany and we always had problems with security, especially being located next to the main train station. There is a security-guard standing in the front lobby (I believe only in the evenings/nights) and you can only access the hallway leading to the rooms, as well as your room itself, with a key-card. The staff seemed friendly, but I must say, they didn't emit a "hostel-friendliness". If I'm coming to stay at a hostel, it's nice to be welcomed by down-to-earth, open-minded, chill people, especially after having traveled a lot; not by people who are just there to earn some money. The environment in the lobby was also a bit too "hip" and modern for my taste, but that's my personal opinion. I prefer a very chilled out, relaxed, and somewhat shabby/homelike atmosphere when I go to a hostel; not a club/discotheque. Having said that, they do separate the "club" area from the bar area. Overall, I highly recommend for both backpackers, vacationers, and business-people alike. read more

Where do I even begin... This is the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Even as a last resort ... DONT stay here. 1 - the location is so dodgy (and I've stayed in some dodgy areas in lots of countries but this was really bad). It's like crack head city as soon as you open the front door of the hostel, we stayed two nights and both nights saw multiple fights out front of the hostel. Did not feel safe at all. 2 - the guests here made us feel very uncomfortable. I had to change rooms twice because the first room there were two old men who insisted on being naked in the room (I'm a 20 year old girl), the next room was again full of old men, so I finally paid extra and switched to a female only dorm.... Which had a girl sleeping on the floor. Also there were about 30 or more kids under 16 staying in the hostel at the same time, they were very loud and annoying. This is not like other hostels with like minded young people. 3 - the rooms are really stuffy (no aircon) and the bathroom is miniature. The sound from all the commotion going on in the street also carries into the room and is loud and disturbing. The only nice thing about this place was the friendly and helpful staff. Either way this experience put me off hostels for good and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! STAY AWAY! read more

I wouldn't recommend this hostel to anyone except as a last resort. Not only are the rooms much too small for the number of people, but the staff is extremely unfriendly. The whole atmosphere makes one feel like he is being treated simply as a source of money rather than as a person. After reserving ahead of time, I checked in with my girlfriend for a two-night stay and was asked whether we were together, to which I answered "yes". I was informed that we were assigned beds that they were not next to each other. I asked how strict the situation with the beds were and whether it might be possible to switch, to which the response was "the room is already full, it's your problem if you want to switch with someone else". When we got to the room, we did indeed manage to convince another guest to switch beds with us. However, the next day when we came back from our sightseeing tour we were in for a shock. All of the stuff that had been on the bed -- toiletries, a charging mobile phone, a towel, a laptop charger, etc., plus the backpack that had been in the trunk under the bed had disappeared, and another person was lying in the bed. It turns out that the person we had switched with had checked out, and the hostel staff had removed everything from the bed to which he had been assigned. We went to the lobby to ask what happened and were again treated to unfriendly/clueless staff. Luckily we did eventually succeed in getting our stuff back. However, everything -- electronics, toiletries and all -- had apparently been dumped into a big trash bag, and the toiletries bag had been left open so that shampoo etc. was tumbling around freely inside. All in all it makes one question the training/job satisfaction of the people working at this hostel when they treat guest's possessions in such a thoughtless manner. Honestly, had the initial check-in person not been so unfriendly and had he informed us that the cleaning staff would mercilessly attack assigned beds after the assignee had checked out, the situation could have been avoided. In any case, there are enough other reasons besides the unfriendly staff to avoid this hostel--the rooms are very cramped,the bathrooms are practically port-a-potty-sized, there's a very high risk of running into annoyingly loud, party-minded teenage school kids, and lots of things (key cards, electric outlets) don't work half the time. On top of that the location, while practical, is somewhat dodgy at night. Just say no to this hostel. Go somewhere where you'll be treated like an actual person. read more
