I've gone on a couple ghost tours in other cities and loved them. After reading the reviews for…read moreFayetteville, I was really amped for a tour and booked one for a friend's birthday. One thing I didn't like was you weren't able to buy individual tickets online, you had to purchase 2 or more -- thus making it difficult for me to tell party goers to buy their own ticket. I understand why, but it was also a little inconvenient. We had a group of 6 and then 2 other people accompanied us. Unfortunately, it is currently June and hot as balls here. We also booked right when the governor made it a requirement to wear masks due to COVID, so policy for the tour was you must wear a mask... even if you're outside walking. If you don't have a mask, you have to buy one from your guide and they're $5. Lame, but whatever, keep everyone safe, right? Well, the tour started at the Fayetteville train station and went from there. I honestly feel like it would have been really interesting had our tour guide been more enthusiastic. He was very hard to hear, even with a megaphone, but also didn't really have a good practiced script and kind of stumbled through the entire tour, leaving me questioning how well he actually knew the information... then basically asked for tips at the end and left us feeling obligated to give him something. Would I take another tour from someone else? Perhaps. Is it worth the gamble? I'm not sure. I just didn't feel the magic, sorry!

Even though we didn't book until 2 hours before start time they were very accommodating. The only reason I'm not giving this tour 5 stars (I wish 4.5 was an option) is that there were some communication issues between the cafe and the tour company. Clients of the tour thought we would get 30% off of food and the cafe staff seemed to have no idea what we were talking about. Overall though, if I were in the city more than a day I would have definitely tried another one of their tours. Wonderful experience!

I lucked out and found a parking spot at Tap Room. It is a small lot, so it may fill up quickly. There is another lot behind the building to the side or street parking is available. There was a street market, so it was harder to find. I did double-check that I could park at the bar when I checked in for the tour. Restrooms are available inside, and food and beverages can be brought on the trolley with a few exceptions. I liked this tour as we got a history lesson while the trolley was moving, and then we got to get off at different stops for a new perspective and not just looking out the windows. I still enjoyed looking out the windows and took some photos from there that weren't part of the tour. St. Agnes Hospital was our first stop. The stone hospital was rebuilt and opened in June 1909. It was during the Jim Crow Era for black citizens, as they were not allowed in white hospitals. We also stopped at the Heck-Andrews House. We learned of a secret tunnel and that there used to be a baseball stadium where a parking lot sits today. Devereaux Meadow was a minor league baseball stadium. I never knew a grand "Castle" (the original Meredith College) once stood near the Executive Mansion. It was a hotel and state office buildings at one point, too. It's wild that it's just a parking lot now! We got to see one of the trolley stops of the Glenwood line. It took people to Bloomsbury Park. It had electric lights at the trolley park. There was even a roller coaster, carousel, and a dance pavilion. Heather was an amazing tour guide and shared her knowledge and love of the city with us. I look forward to taking more tours with her.

My first Raleigh food tour was a great introduction to Raleigh and how I learned to get around in Downtown Raleigh. So since then I always try to find a food tour while traveling. Even though I've taken the Raleigh tour multiple times it has not been the same exact tour as the restaurants rotate so the route changes. Taste Carolina has tours in Raleigh; Durham; Hillsborough; Asheville; Winston Salem; Greensboro; Chapel Hill; Charlotte and Wilmington. Besides Raleigh, I've been on the Hillsborough tour; Durham tour and Wilmington tour. The only tour that wasn't up to par with the other Taste Carolina tours was the Wilmington tour. I do not recommend that tour. The website is easy to use and book the tour you want to take and you can list any food restrictions or food allergies. They try to accommodate. Then you are provided a starting location and parking suggestions. On tour day, you meet your guide and you are off exploring the town as well as discovering restaurants you might not have heard of before. Back when I started these tours, my palate was limited. These tours exposed me to foods I never would have ordered. Some I loved and others not so much but that is all part of the experience to try new things. Generally there are about five or six stops on the tour. You will be given your dish then usually the chef or owner comes out and tells you about the dish and the history of the restaurant. On my last tour I took the Durham tour a second time. At the stating point, the guide had the route we'd be walking on a map with all the restaurants we'd be stopping. I learned some new areas in Durham and went to new restaurants. I regularly eat at several restaurants I was introduced to on the first Durham tour. I've tried to take the Asheville tour for years but the weeks it runs never meshes when I am in town. March will take me on the Greensboro tour though. This was recommended to me by someone on my Durham food tour.
