If you are traveling TDY to Fort Eustis - congratulations you will more than likely be forced to stay at General Smalls. -Comparable to low to mid grade hotel -Rooms have small fridges microwave and stovetop BUT not all rooms equipped with cookware dishes or utensils -General condition is worn and dated -Beds have zero give and are extremely firm no padded comfort here +Free coffee +Self service snacks +Centrally located Normally Air Force Inns are better than other lodging - but in this case it's time to turn this place to IHG and up the game.

Below is the story of Major General Robert Smalls (1839-1916) taken from The (Fort Eustis, Virginia, USA) United States Army Transoprtion Museum. https://transportation.army.mil/museum/index.html Robert Smalls was born a slave on Ashdale Plantation at Beaufort, SC on April 5, 1839. His mother was Lydia, a house slave, and his father an unknown white man. At age 12, Smalls' owner sent him to Charleston to hire himself out. He worked as a waiter, lamplighter and dock-worker, and was allowed to retain $1.00 per month of his pay. He taught himself to read and write. At age 18, he negotiated with his owner and thereafter retained all but $15.00 per month of his pay. He was hired as a deckhand on the rebel steamer PLANTER in 1861 and later became its pilot. On Christmas Eve of 1858, he married Hannah Jones (pictured left), a hotel slave maid, and had three children. He mastered the seafaring art, and as the de facto pilot of the PLANTER, he transported guns and ammunition for the Confederate cause. On the morning of May 13, 1862, long before sunrise and while the ship's white officers still slept in Charleston, the 23-year old slave pilot Robert Smalls smuggled his wife and three children aboard the PLANTER (pictured right, circa 1861 loaded with cotton) and took command. With his crew of 12 slaves, Smalls donned the clothing of the PLANTER's confederate captain, hoisted the Confederate flag and with great daring sailed the PLANTER past the other Confederate ships and out to sea. Once beyond the range of Confederate guns, he hoisted a flag of truce and delivered the PLANTER to the commanding officer of the Union fleet. Smalls explained that he intended the PLANTER as a contribution by black Americans for the cause of freedom. The ship was received as contraband, and Smalls and his black crew were welcomed as heroes. Later President Lincoln received Smalls in Washington and rewarded him and his crew $1500 for their valor. THE PLANTER Built for commercial use at Charleston in 1860, the PLANTER (pictured right) was a 300-ton side-wheel steamship. She was armed with a 24-pound howitzer, a 32-pound pivot gun, a 7-inch rifle and 4 smooth-bore cannons. The PLANTER had served as headquarters ship for General Ripley. She was a valuable ship because she could carry as many as 1,000 troops, and her shallow draft gave her freedom throughout the coastal waters. Robert Smalls was transferred to the ironclad KEOKUK (pictured left) for an ill-fated attack at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 7, 1863. KEOKUK suffered almost 100 shell hits at or below the water and sunk to the bottom. Smalls survived the KEOKUK attack and was transferred back to the PLANTER. He was given official command of the PLANTER and made a captain in the US Navy. He served in this position throughout the war. Above, a line engraving published in "Harper's Weekly", January-June 1863, pages 264-65, depicting the Federal fleet off the harbor mouth at the time of the ironclads' attack on Fort Sumter, 7 April 1863. U.S. Navy ships specifically identified include NEW IRONSIDES (second from left in the ironclad formation) and KEOKUK (ironclad furthest to the right). After the war, Smalls (pictured right, circ 1871) returned to South Carolina to enter politics. He served in the South Carolina Senate from 1868 to 1870. In 1875 he was elected to the US Congress for the first of five terms. Smalls' record as a congressman was progressive. He fought for equal travel accommodations for black Americans and for the civil and legal protection of children of mixed parentage. He was one of six black members of the South Carolina constitutional convention of 1895. After leaving Congress, Smalls served as U.S. Collector of Customs 1889-1911 in Beaufort, SC. He lived in Beaufort as owner in the house in which he had been a slave. He retained his interest in the military and became a major general in the South Carolina militia. In 1879 he was restored to Navy pension rolls by a private congressional relief bill signed by President Harrison. In 1900, he was awarded an additional $5,000 in prize money for PLANTER because the ship had been undervalued during the war. Robert Smalls died of smallpox on Feb 22, 1916, and is buried in the churchyard of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort, SC. There is a memorial bust of him in front of the African Baptist Church in Beaufort.

Nice place to stay at Ft. Eustis. Check in was quick and there is small snack shop in the lobby that has coffee. Nice and quite.

I'm talking walls vibrating, eardrums taking damage, zero ability to think, work, or exist like a functioning human being. If you have small children trying to sleep, a work call to take, or literally any reason to need a quiet hotel room after 8:30 PM, walk away now. But here's what pushed this from "unfortunate" to completely unacceptable. I spoke with the front desk staff, a girl named Tori, who informed me without a shred of apology or urgency that this happens every single night. Her exact solution? Accept it. That's it. No offer to move my room. No call to management. No acknowledgment that this is even a problem. Just a shrug and "yeah, this just happens." That is not hospitality. That is a staff that has completely checked out and a management team that has allowed a nightly disturbance to become normalized instead of addressed. Hampton Inn markets itself as a professional, reliable stay. What they are actually delivering at this location is a front desk that will tell you a shaking hotel room is just your problem to deal with. Hilton should be embarrassed this property carries their name. Stay somewhere else. Anywhere else.

She reads over the printed confirmation sheet...says it doesn't help her, she has no rooms booked and tells me that its not her problem. After going around and around with her, she refers me to Expedia. While standing at the front desk, Expedia calls her, tells her that the rooms were booked, they attempt to provide her confirmation #s, etc. Same result, she doesnt have any rooms booked and it isnt her problem. The HIE closed and the Mulberry took over use of both buildings. However, the staff reported the newer building that once housed the HIE will soon be a Comfort Inn by Spring. The Mulberry is right off the Ft. Eustis Base making it very convenient for those visiting the area. We have at least an annual swim meet on base and this location works out perfectly. Parking is not an issue unless they are sold out, then it is tight. The lot remained clean on our two day stay. The trash can by the door was kept tidy through the weekend. The exterior of the hotel is well maintained and a Christmas wreath adorned the front of the building. No issues with check in and the price was definitely right, some where around $75. Staff was nice and helpful. This is a no frills type of property, so don't expect a lavish lobby. However, it was well kept up. The room on check in was clean. It came with a refrigerator at no additional cost which was appreciated. However, no microwave and most likely they could accommodate if one was needed. The bathroom is ridiculously small, but everything worked. There were plug-ins around for electronic devices. Bed sheets, pillows and cover were in good shape on the two standard beds, however I did not find them comfortable. There is also FREE WiFi which is always welcomed. A FREE hot breakfast is offered in the older Mulberry property. I found it adequate for the price point of the hotel. The area was kept up and clean each day. Staff was in the area, but no advert chatting with guest which is always welcome by me. The property is clean, staff friendly, price is surely right. I am at a 3.5, but rounding down due to the bed not being comfortable for my taste. In my opinion the current rating of a 2 is not correct at all and consider them on par for price point. I will most likely end up here, or the new branded Comfort Inn when opened.

Upon arrival, we were told that the mobile key feature wasn't working and hadn't been for over a month. We then go to our room and put our stuff down because we needed to run some quick errands before stores closed. Upon arriving back at the hotel I began to do my normal process of checking the bed etc. I found that there was what appeared to be either blood or someone had something cheesy in the inside comforter layer. Which meant either you didn't wash it or you need to just throw it away. Either way disgusting! We decided we would just sleep on top and call the front desk in the morning because we were too tired from traveling and running errands. The next morning we awake and decide we'll take my showers etc before calling down so we could be ready to meet up with family. To our surprise, there was hair in the tub and then when my husband cut the shower on, it began to back up like it was flooding. After taking a half shower, he called down and asked to change rooms. He was rudely told we couldn't because they were sold out and that it would have to wait. He then expressed that we were at the hotel for several days. Then the lady said she would send maintenance but we would have to wait. He told her that was unacceptable and when he asked for a manager, she then said it would be 20 mins. Maintenance showed up with a serious mean mug on his face like he was beyond irritated that he had to come and do some work in our room. After evaluating the situation, he stated he needed to grab additional tools and he came back and fixed the issue. Overall, I give this hotel a 1 out of 10 and only because zero isn't an option. The hotel has been my regular go-to whenever I visit Yorktown, going on for about 10 years now. The amenities and the reasonable price make a difference. There's an indoor pool, a hot buffet breakfast included in the price of the room, there's wi-fi, a decent fitness center, and a functioning business center. Under Hilton's reservation system I was able to select my room the day before I arrived and was able to use Hilton's app to download the key to my room a couple of hours before the posted check-in time. The same thing was true when I checked out - tapped the app and my receipt was emailed to me within the hour. Nearby, there's a Burger King, and there's a Subway across the parking lot; there are also moderately priced restaurants and bars and a full-service grocery store and Virginia ABC store within a minute or two walking distance. I usually ride on Amtrak to get to Newport News from D.C., and the recently opened station is gorgeous. Lyft and Uber are well-supported, and I was able to schedule an early Sunday morning Lyft for about $25 for the 20-minute ride from the hotel to Amtrak (it costs less than that if you don't need to schedule in advance). Upon arriving at the hotel, I was recognized as a Diamond-tiered Hilton Honors member and offered snacks based on that status. The front desk staff members have consistently been welcoming, courteous, and helpful. I sampled the breakfast offerings, which included both oatmeal and grits, biscuits and gravy, and waffles, in addition to bagels, muffins, cereals, eggs, sausage, fruit, and yogurt. Front desk was friendly and texted when our room was ready to check-in, around 1:00pm, which was great. Our room and bathroom were clean (shower, toilet, sink), comfortable bed and pillows, great balcony view as advertised, and a TV, coffee maker, microwave, and fridge. These came in handy, as my little one is always hungry for snacks throughout the day, so we saved money on heating up some microwaveable Mac and cheese, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc. for lunches. Also, hot popcorn on the balcony at night was lovely. The pool and grounds are very pretty; think Magnolia trees, crepe Myrtles, wrought iron chairs and a gazebo. My little one enjoyed the pool both evenings before our awesome dinners at Yorktown Pub (a York County institution). Pool towels are available, too. We met the owners, who live on the property, and they couldn't have been more pleasant; very personable people. The complimentary breakfast was perfect for us, too. English muffins, bagels, pastries, fruit, cereal, yogurt, juice, milk, coffee, etc., exactly what we needed to start each day. The lobby is beautifully redone, and the owner said that's their vision for the rest of the hotel. I was a bit apprehensive reading some bad reviews, but it was exactly what we wanted and we had a great stay. I look forward to going back and seeing how the rest of the renovations turn out. Also, as the only hotel on the water there, their prices are totally fair. You can walk to everything, have a parking spot, and again, a beautiful view. Don't let the bad reviews fool you; it's a lovely hotel.
