I don't fancy paying a karate instructor to spend 15 minutes at then end of a karate session that's…read more30 minutes long that I'm paying a lot of money for so that he can brag to all the kids and parents about how cool he is because he used to practice karate on his lunch breaks in high school, and he's apparently a math whiz. I would only know this if he told me... he did. He likes to brag... a lot. He brags to the whole dojo. Also a cult-Luke atmosphere. "I don't know any kids who quit; only parents who quit." So planting the seed if you "cancel" services you're a loser/quitter. That crap doesn't work on me. He likes to lecture the parents a lot under the guise of addressing "the class" I see right through his bull. I was paying $330 per month, but that's not all! Wait! There's more! There's a $29 fee sign up per child. There are tons of other fees. Tournament fees, test fees... $60 here, $80 there, $50 for this... it's extremely expensive and it didn't even work. I spent thousands of dollars in less than a year... over $3,000 in 7 months, and that doesn't include the months that they charged me after I said I wanted to terminate my contract. My contract was up. I was on the fence to renew due to the expense, the schedule, and it wasn't really accomplishing what we wanted to accomplish. When it was time to renew, I asked Angela if my boys could keep attending the same class because I only had a small window after school to be able to show up. I told her that I would only renew if my boys could stay in the same class. I overheard the conversation she had with Michael (because I was sitting on the floor since there is never any seats to sit in). He said it would be fine, so I renewed my contract for 7 more months. 1 month later, this happened: He gave a speech to the whole dojo. Parents and children included (another lecture to the whole "class" but he was really directly addressing ME). It was right after a "test." Both of my kids passed their tests and belted up. So he decided to make an "announcement", I guess. "If you have two kids in the same class and one of them passed their test then they are going to be in a different class now and you need to figure that out. I have a family who have 8 kids in 8 different classes so figure it out." It was obvious to me he was addressing me since I was the only human being who had two kids in the same class. If he wasn't cool with that- it would be fine, but he never said that. He said he was cool until I signed the contract and then all of a sudden he wants to call me out in front of literally everyone because I literally can't be in two places at once. I never showed up for a class after that, but I still had to pay over $1,000 which was a loss. Also, why do we need to teach 5-year-olds how to break someone's arm? That's weird. Like, I get "kick here; kick there." Do your blocking set. Do Form 1, etc... but why? Why would a 5-year-old ever need to know how to give another child a "spiral fracture" in their arm?? It's weird. He was SO JAZZED to teach a bunch of kids how to give another kid a spiral fracture in their arm. Odd. Kindergarteners! Scared mouse of a wife charges bookoo bucks for photos, another upcharge. She puts her photos on shirts & (over)charges for that as well. Very cult-like atmosphere.

The evening classes that I attend are taught by lead instructor, Ray. Although I only train in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Karate classes are also offered here. Onsite gym access is also offered with Gold membership and access to the Orange facility is also offered with the Gold membership. Muay Thai practices typically consist of a warm-up such as jump rope or jumping with conditioning drills in-between, shadow boxing, learning technique by hitting pads, bag drills with punches and kicks and sparring at the last 15 minutes of practice. The workout is great for me as I'm in my 50's and I don't have any aspirations to compete. I attend 2 - 3 times a week, evenings during the week and sometimes Saturday morning. It would be tough to get that high intensity workout by just going to a gym. The staff is is friendly and helpful. My only opportunities for improvement are more clinch training is needed on Monday or Fridays and the mats could be cleaned more frequently. Four stars!

My 6-year-old ended up with ringworm 2 TIMES after attending class, I'm extremely disappointed with…read morethe cleanliness of the facility. This is a kids' program where children are rolling around on the mats all day, sweating and making constant skin-to-skin contact. Hygiene should be an absolute priority. Simply giving the mats a quick wipe with a soft cloth is not enough. Mats need to be properly cleaned and disinfected regularly with products and procedures designed to prevent the spread of things like ringworm and other skin infections. After this experience, I seriously question their sanitation practices. When parents trust you with their children, providing a clean and sanitary training environment should be the bare minimum. I would strongly recommend parents pay attention to the condition of the mats and ask about their cleaning procedures before enrolling their kids.

This isn't a glorified (Steven Segal Above the Law) class on learning how to thrash someone it's the real version of what Aikido is and takes a lot of patience and understanding to learn how to be taught on how to focus on being constructive to know the differences and be able to understand how to defend yourself. Learning Aikido is a great Martial Art and isn't like Karate, Kung Fi, Tai Kwan Do, or Boxing. Aikido teaches one on how to defend oneself from attacks and to use the others force against them to counter the timing for defense to completely thrown them off. Aikido training is based primarily on two partners practicing pre-arranged forms rather than freestyle practice. The basic pattern is for the receiver of the technique to initiate an attack against the person who applies the technique. Once the art is learned one will be confident to understand on how to defend themselves without actually trying to figure what to do it's an automatic response and gives on the control to know exactly what to do against attacks.

Huge recreation space, so many different amenities to try, overall a pretty nice recreation center…read more After 4 years of coming here to the student rec center at UCR, I've decided to write a Yelp review. There have been so many changes over the years to the gym here at UCR, mostly to try to better the place. They've moved things around, made things nicer, added more things, and overall improved the gym space but adding things like extra power racks and now they have a weight sled on the second floor. Service is generally friendly but usually whenever I ask the front desk for things, they seem lost or they act like they don't care about anything. Overall, I do think that this recreation center is a lot nicer than other the other UCs. Some of my complaints include that they refuse to have higher dumbbell limits, since the highest dumbbells only go up to 100. I know it's not in-demand to have them, but if students need to progress, you'd think they'd add more weights. I also don't like that they got rid of some of the leg machines downstairs and moved them upstairs. By doing that, you're making students become even more lazy from doing leg workouts more often and you've created a chicken leg epidemic! haha If you're coming to this gym from outside of the university, I believe that they have guest passes for $5. But if you're from UCR, I highly suggest utilizing this gym because it's included in your tuition.

They have any type of weight training you need, an indoor track, beautiful pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, and almost anything you need. The equipment is kept clean, and you can use the rooms to do floor training when classes aren't being held. Speaking of classes - they have people come and teach Zumba, Pilates, or again - anything you need. Water stations on both floors, and clean bathrooms on both floors as well. Sometimes the SRC gets crowded, but that's mostly after the New Years. If you avoid prime hours of working out you'll have no problem getting the machines you need. However, even if it is crowded, you'll still get what you need with a short wait time. If you're a student or have the opportunity to use this gym, I strongly recommend it!

This is best for the motivated student who is able to practice on their own and not need to follow the leader. Probably the fastest way to really learn the art. Students in this class are working on different things including the Yang style Long form, Guang Ping Form, Baguazhang, and the Partner T'ai Chi Ch'uan form. Small class. Monday Evenings at 7 PM is their weapons and applications class. The name is misleading as the applications are really Self Defense moves out of the T'ai Chi form and what they call Pushing Hands and Sticky Hands Drills. Weapons are taught including walking stick, short stick, broadsword and straight sword. The weapon taught changes by the quarter. Today he was teaching the stick form and partner stick form. First segment of the class are ch'i kung and loosening exercises. Wednesday night he has a semi private Beginners class for 15 minutes, which usually only has one or two students so is the best deal. Then the Beginners are integrated into the continuing/advanced class that meets at 7:15 for group exercise and form. After that each student works on what ever they need to work on. The teacher is Harvey Kurland who has been teaching at UCR since 1989 was brought in by the head of the karate dept due to his great knowledge of the art. Kurland is well known in t'ai chi ch'uan world as expert teacher and international judge, as well as writer on the art. He has had Medical Researchers at Loma Linda University do research on the effects of his curriculum. They found significant improvement in balance in seniors and those with diabetic neuropathy.
