I have been to multiple Gen locations, and this was by far the worst location I have visited. Unfortunately, the host was very rude when we asked if we could add one more person to our party. I would understand if this had been an inconvenience on a busy day, but the restaurant was nowhere near busy, with only about four other parties in the entire restaurant at the time. We also received the wrong meat multiple times throughout our meal, which made the overall service even more disappointing. Aside from the service, the restaurant itself was very spacious and clean. I've had much better experiences at other Gen locations, so this visit was definitely disappointing in comparison. read more

We enjoy the AYCE bbq at Gen. The meats are well marinated and we enjoy the variety that they offer. I docked 2 stars because they are always understaffed at this Mountain /view location. We came here for lunch and there was no wait - however, it took a good 10 minutes before we were seated as there was only 1 person working the whole restaurant - He was our host and server and also bus boy when needed. We love the bonchon they have at the table in particular the kimchee and the cucumber pickles. We love the spicy pork bulgogi best. There are 3-4 types of marinated chicken, meats and a bunch of appetizers. We ordered the jap chae, mandu, Double dragon (new), fish tonkatsu from the appetizer menu. Prices have gone up but it is still pretty reasonable for what you get. The double dragon is crispy deep fried shrimp. Has a bit of a coconut flavor. The tartar sauce that comes with it was just ok. I think a sweet chili sauce might be a better complement than the tartar sauce. We like coming here for lunch/dinner but they need to get more help. read more

Got here on a Saturday right before the dinner rush to avoid a long wait. We had already joined the Yelp waitlist, and when we walked in we were told we were second in line, but somehow became third while checking in, which was strange. People who came after us were also getting seated before us. The restaurant was clearly very understaffed. A lot of people were leaving when we arrived, yet we still had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated. No one seemed to be managing the flow properly, and dirty tables were left sitting uncleared the entire time. I only saw two people working in the kitchen, one nonstop slicing meat and another making sides. They seriously need to hire more staff. Plus, the space felt very outdated. The floors looked worn down, and the entire restaurant could really use better ventilation and a full renovation. Once who I believe was the restaurant manager stepped in, everything suddenly became much more organized and the staff seemed more efficient. Dined here recently with some friends to celebrate a buddy's birthday on a Friday evening. For a party of 7, initially we had planned to use the Yelp Waitlist feature to join 30 minutes prior but realized that afternoon that for parties 7+, you actually need to call the restaurant for a reservation. I called the restaurant 2hrs before our desired time and was glad a reservation was available. I also requested a table with two burners with our larger party. We were all seated promptly at check-in at a large long table with two burners. It took a while before our waiter showed up to take our drink and orders. We opted for the premium AYCE for an extra $20/person which made it $50.95/person. The meats were fresh and came out pretty quick. They gave us plates of "rice paper", similar to the flat rice noodles at Asian restaurants. The thinly sliced wagyu and short ribs were great! The green tea salt went well with the rice paper and grilled meats. The premium also includes one drink - some of us ordered a pint of Kirin while others went with Soju. The restaurant was clean and spacious with plenty of parking out front and back. While the premium did give us access to the selection of wagyu meats I'm not sure if it was worth the $51/person. Like others have mentioned, a few items we ordered were also missed and we had to them multiple times... items like extra kim chi, kim chi fried rice, etc... the mandu we ordered never arrived. A few different experiences of asking for something like spoons for the salsa for the carnitas. They never appeared for the next 30 minutes. They have the employees but I think the manager needs to stop passing free shots of soju and manage the restaurant a little better. I declined the soju btw, we don't drink Alcohol. The other Gen would have been double. The entrance doors are pretty hard to open. There is a lot of air holding the doors shut. Must be their large exhaust fan for all the BBQ being cooked by patrons. There is a comfortable waiting area and we witnessed one of the hostess catch someone trying to sneak into a table and go ahead of the line. She was very polite and professional about it. Once we were seated they gave us a table with enough room for my legs as I'm 6ft 4. Love to Strech my legs. We were asked to scan the QR code with our phones to see the menu and order we did. As you can see all the food we ordered. The food was really great. Loved everything. We ate everything we ordered. Cons: we had to ask 3 different waitstaff for vegetables. The waitstaff seemed confused at times and even though we were seated near the kitchen it was hard to get their attention. Suggestion: ask for more napkins when you order food. You're going to probably use your hands at some point so it would be good to wash your hands before you eat. One thing that's very important and shows how organized and clean a restaurant is, is the restroom. The men's restroom had water on the floor when you walk in. It was slippery. The whole restroom near the urinal and toilets was water on the floor. However I did see one of the prep cooks wash his hands with soap and water. A definite plus. Food quality. Our third time dining in roughly two weeks at the third location!!! I called several times during business hours and left a voicemail during non business hours hoping for a call in return as a party of six to reserve the large table. We were seated at two different tables near each other with a serving walk way in between. Our servers name was Nairy, I was with five hungry men, four of them had no idea how the key worked. I explained to them and assisted ordering for them. I was worried that Nairy was so young and was going to be an inexperienced server. Nairy brought her experience and her A game, providing top notch service!!!! Nairy made sure to assist with those small details that make the experience more enjoyable!! Alcohol was flowing through the men, she took her time making recommendations for them choosing words like HIGHER QUALITY ALCOHOL... this translates to more expensive and makes the company more money.. My boyfriend and I went to Gen Korean BBQ to celebrate his birthday, and we enjoyed our experience with a few caveats: 1) they forgot our sides a few times (for corn cheese and potato salad), 2) the grill change time was a tad long, so we were left inhaling the smoky fumes for a while, and 3) the host left after putting us on the waitlist and after a new one arrived, he seated multiple parties that arrived after us immediately. I don't think this is necessarily the fault of anyone, this location does appear to be understaffed. It didn't make our dining experience downright unforgivable, the food is great. I like the new bulgogi fries and I appreciate that our server allowed for me to try it in a smaller portion than anticipated on the photo preview! Love the brisket and beef belly here, definitely the best cuts of meat that I can eat over and over again. I always have to get the salad, some potato salad, and some japchae on the side to balance everything out. My boyfriend got a lemonade as well. Overall good, the meats didn't take too long to come out and we managed to end the night with a bang! PS: If you pay with a Costco gift card, you should bring cash to tip. Honestly, Gen was one of my go-to spots to get cheap KBBQ around the Bay Area. There were multiple locations around the South Bay, but nothing beat the Mountain View location since the servers were nice, the portions were filling, and it was ALWAYS busy. However, times have changed and Gen really went down hill. My husband and I came last night because he really likes Gen for KBBQ and we both enjoyed the spicy tofu soup here previously, but last night really changed our whole experience. This location was not busy at all. We were able to walk up to the counter, tell the hostess how many were in our party, and we were seated right away. I didn't catch our server's name, but I can't fault her for anything tbh. Since we've been to Gen a handful of times, we already knew what we wanted. Price for dinner is now $30.95* (this can change) and they have a premium menu for $20 more per person. I was like meh, we don't really see anything that's enticing on the premium menu, so we stayed with regular dinner price. My husband and I ordered the following: -Brisket -Pork Belly -Pork Cheek -Cheese Tonkotsu -Mandu -Korean Pancakes -Galbi -Beef Rib Finger -Spicy Tofu Soup -Beef Belly** I'll mention a comment about this at the end -Rice -Rice Wraps Honestly... where to I begin lol MEATS: -Brisket: If you saw how sad this plate was in real life, you would be appalled by what you got. You used to get an abundance of brisket, but I understand that with COVID + inflation, you have to cut back a bit. We HARDLY got anything on the plate and it was lack luster. Even cooking the meat was unpleasant and it was SUPER dry. I DON'T recommend getting this here because it's not worth it at all anymore, and brisket is typically the #1 most ordered!! -Pork Belly: Our table did not have the best heating plate. The flame went out twice and we got a HUGE slab of pork but the table did not heat hot enough to cook it. My husband and I looked at each other and we were like.. it's like 0.5" thick LOL HOW CAN WE COOK IT IF OUR TABLE ISN'T GETTING HOT??? It was still raw by the time we were switched to a different table, so we didn't end up eating it. -Pork Cheek: This one took just as equally long, but this was ok when we were able to eat it. The portions are SUPER small for this. -Galbi: This was probably the top meat of the night although they gave us thinner slices. It didn't take up too much time to cook, but the marinade was alright for the most part. A bit thinner in sauce, but decent. -Beef Rib Finger: these were decent too. Thick slices, but small portions as well. They only gave us like 5 pieces of this and it took awhile to cook based on our table. -Beef Belly: initially our server said they were out of beef belly, but magically had it at the end of the night. We only got like 4-5 thin slices and when we cooked it on our table, it definitely shriveled up and turned into a chip. Not the most pleasant experience with this meat. APPETIZERS/SIDES: -Spicy Tofu Soup: Unfortunately they changed the recipe for this!! It was more filled with zucchini than tofu, no shrimp as part of the soup base, and it was not as spicy as before. It was still good, but not as before. Sad because we thought this could be a saving grace to our meal, but we were disappointed as well. -Cheese Tonkotsu: Honestly this was reaching to point where it was almost burnt. The cheese inside the pork was ok. The meat was somewhat juicy, but the breading was a bit more toasted than usual. The sauce that's paired with the tonkotsu was too strong of a flavor for the pork cutlet. Super disappointed with this. -Korean Pancakes: I kept seeing this one being brought out and wanted to try this out. This was probably one of the best things I've tried all night. The pancake itself was mochi like and the filling inside was a thicker paste that had some cinnamon notes to it. Definitely a saving grace, but not enough to get me to come back. Honestly disappointed at the experience I had last night at Gen. The food was so lackluster than other locations and it didn't seem as lively anymore. this is the worst Gen experience I've had, i mean Gen is a low bar in general since its company tradition to understaff the restaurant, not feed their employees, and service quality is not a priority. I did not get even all of my first order, sat there for 30 minutes absolutely dumbfounded with nothing on the table, no water, empty beers, without all of the usual accoutrements that the meal is supposed to START with and just left cash and left. It's hilarious how downhill Gen restaurants have gone, they used to have 2 hour waits for them when San Jose was the only one and it was a good time where the servers put in a great nights work with the necessary support staff and weren't juggling 12 tables very poorly with their managers acting as food runners. I don't care about the money, it's the idea that this brand displaced a lot of independent korean restaurants when they became popular and this is what we ended up with, just about the worst service you can experience in any restaurant with the promise of a ton of food that never really shows up. read more

Been to Gen at various locations multiple times. I almost always complain about service to my husband. Whether it's the waiter forgetting something or taking super long to get to us. Today was not the case. I went at 3pm with my daughter for a late lunch/early dinner.Our waiter Cynthia was amazing. When we placed our first order she checked 3 times with me to make sure the order was correct before leaving. After leaving our table I saw her run around tending to other tables and then grab everything we ordered (minus meat) in one trip. Throughout our meal she was attentive and fast. She is literally the only reason I am giving 4 stars it would be five if the food was better. For appetizers we ordered japchae and the mandu. The mandu was good and crispy, but the japchae was a little bland. For meat we ordered brisket, Kalbi, and the pork belly. The brisket wasnt great with not much fat making it dry and tough. Kalbi was OK. When we return to this Gen location I can only hope Cynthia is there. read more

1 star for the manager, Johnathan, and his EXTREMELY and EXTRAORDINARILY unprofessional attitude to the point of yelling at a 75 year old customer. If I could give zero or negative stars, I would. Unfortunately, the other waiters and waitresses were hard working and professional, and the food was tasty as always, but the manager's behavior was so egregiously inappropriate, which is what is causing this 1 star review. Let me start of by saying my family and I are huge fans of Gen, and have eaten at numerous locations all over. Overall, we have had positive experiences that result in us continually coming back for years! Today, we came in and got in line to sign in with the host. There were two groups in front of us. The host told each group, including us, to just wait 5-10 minutes, and that we would be seated. Each group tried to give a name/group size but the host said it was not necessary; and to just sit and wait. All 3 groups sat around the chairs and entrance, and we all waited. As we all sat there, other groups came in and got in line to check in. The original host had walked away, and was replaced by someone else - later found out to be the manager - Johnathan. Johnathan started seating each of the new groups immediately (leaving behind the 3 groups that were seated and waiting). After watching several groups (3-4 groups) get immediately seated, my mom (75 year old) went to Johnathan to ask what happened and why the other groups (including us) were all told to wait but groups coming after us could be seated first. Johnathan proceeded to YELL and SCREAM at my mom, who is visibly elderly. He yelled so loudly that people in the back of the restaurant heard this and turned to look. Johnathan's behavior reflected a serious lack of judgment and respect, and it significantly detracted from what should have been a welcoming experience for all guests. Johnathan's verbally aggressive and demeaning behavior was inexcusable, a blatant disregard for professional norms, and utterly unacceptable. We later found out he was the manager, which was shocking that someone could be a manager with such low levels of professionalism. I want the owners of this establishment to be aware of how Johnathan's conduct falls well below acceptable hospitality and management standards. One thing I appreciate about this location and all the other Gen's is my daughter who has food allergies can have a safe dining experience. If you have a gluten/soy allergy, just order the non-marinated meats. We like Brisket, Beef belly, and pork belly and rice. If you're worried about cross contamination, I recommend to wipe the inside wall of the grill before the grill gets too hot. Unfortunately there isn't a sauce or dip that is allergy friendly. Not even sriracha. Long wait times to get seated, long waits between rounds, server nowhere to be found, forgetting items in my order, under whelming portions sizes. I get that these things happens, but it seem like these things always happen at this location. For wait times, my assumption is this is a staffing issue. So i can't really get upset because I know how hard the restaurant industry works and how much they have to deal with. However we didn't get our waters until halfway through our first round of meat so that was a little irritating. In regards to forgetting things in my order, something was forgotten at least once per round/order. I asked for a few items in the first round and didn't get it until the 3rd round. I also got large portions and small portions of the same exact order in different rounds which can get a little annoying. Personally i don't mind the wait to get seated. I do however wish the wait times between rounds wasn't so long and that I didn't have to continue asking for the same things over and over because they were forgotten. I came in on a Tuesday at 5:00pm and they were not very busy- the hostess came to seat us and asked us if it was the first time we have been here and we had newbies with us so we said this was our first time. This was the second time we had David A as a server and he couldn't have been better. Despite it being a busy Saturday night, he did everything with a smile and nothing was a problem for him. Hostess Abby is the worst, worst experience I've ever received. This restaurant discriminates against people of color. I requested to be seated was told it would be 20 mins, multiple parties arrived after me and were seated before me. While waiters looked my direction and turned around. My husband and I were the only ones seating in the waiting area and the hostess was avoiding eye contact she was more worried about washing plates than making sure we were seated. I asked when I would be seated and was told they paged me, but I did not receive a text/page then I was met with an attitude and a "well I don't know what to tell you." Loved this Korean all you can eat bbq. Only $21.99 for lunch the best value you can't find anywhere. Service was little slow because of short staffing. Meats were very good and appetizers were delicious. Definitely will return soon. read more

Excellent Korean bbq. Wait time can get a little long. The service is quick though. When you're ready to order they'll take your order down. You don't feel like you're getting ripped off. The vibes inside are nice too with the blue lights. read more

Service was good. Ambiance was nice. It was a Tuesday evening. Pretty quiet. However, my son and I added $20 each to get premium because I like wagyu and short ribs. It was very not worth it. The first wagyu, I told the waiter, this is too fatty, and very different from the picture. The second plate, they cut it bigger, and I peeled off the fatty. It did taste but too much work. Then I tried Angus brisket, it was very dry. The only thing I like was short ribs. $117 for two people. read more

Excellent service. We came in on a Friday evening with 0 wait time. The ambiance was nice and the servers were attentive and checked in if we needed anything. Food was amazing, personal favorite is the beef belly, brisket and bulgogi. Katsu cheese was definitely a crowd favorite. read more

Service was ok but the overall experience is the worst ever. Today we went there and the front desk told us delivery was delayed. They emphasized most missing items were appetizers and the delayed item would be there in about one hour. So we still decided to get in. After sitting down and we started to order, we were told most all-you-can-eat items are unavailable: no sea food, most beef were gone, essentially there were only pork and chicken. After the first round (one plate per person) we decided to take more Hawaiian steak but after total of 3 plates we were told they were all gone (we have 5 people so 3 plates isn't that much, given the plate size is small). We then ordered some more sliced beef brisket but what we are pretty sure what we got were pork not beef. After a while the entire menu only has #4 (the so-called beef brisket but in fact pork) and #9 (beef bulgogi) available. It's awful that only two out of 30+ items on menu were available. We then asked when the delayed items would arrive, and they said it took an hour for the items to arrive and it needed another hour to defrost. WTF?! Why didnt you tell this upfront? They were just treating customers as idiots. We ended up ordering more #4 and #9 but soon we were told #9 were all gone and we can only have #4 which we don't like. The overall experience was so bad I strongly recommend people to stay away from it. read more
