I was quoted more than $1000 to replace a garbage disposal. The guy said he couldn't see prices on parts alone. His quote was for labor and parts. He also said they don't even make that brand anymore (they sell them at HD I later found out). Interestingly, the quote is the same whether the job takes one hour or 5. Make it make sense. Was quoted the same price to replace a valve, face plate and shower head in my shower. They call it a "rebuild" so it sounds more involved. Another guy told me that they wouldn't clean my steam boiler due to its age and I should consider a new one. And then began the incessant texts and phone calls to upgrade my boiler, requests to leave a five star review, and friendly check ins in case I had questions. Sometimes it was a human, sometimes an AI that was no help anyway. They checked the box to keep my cc on file on the form I signed without my permission. Now I have to call these jokers to get it removed when all I want is for them to lose my number. In short: Their prices are too high and you need a restraining order to get rid of them. Gem took advantage of us and our situation. it was the last week of that winter cold spell and our furnace pilot light blew out and we could not keep it lit when trying to relight it. We had no heat for several days. We scheduled a non emergent appointment with Gem to come out to take a look. The tech immediately said he believed it was the thermo coupler. he told us it would be 1100.00 to replace. We had no idea what the part or labor cost would be. We reluctantly decided to move forward with the repair because again we had no heat. The tech was there 20 min top and that included the time he went to the truck to retrieve the part. The next day I was explaining our situation to a family member and he was livid. He had some knowledge about the general costs of these parts. He did some research and we learned the thermo coupler is one of the cheapest and easiest parts to change. the part should cost somewhere between 5-50 dollars. We were charged 1120.00 dollars. I called Gem to inquire and I was told there was nothing they would be willing to do. At best this visit should have cost no more than 350-400 dollars. We rely on these companies to give us fair prices. We were completely taken advantage of. Customer service was unapologetic and kept reiterating there was nothing they would do. I am taking the time to share my story because I don't want to see anyone else being taken advantage of. After sharing this story with everyone we told, many said the would never have called Gem because they are big crooks. Some of these people are contractors. I am considering calling the Better Business Bureau and the local news station. It is very upsetting. read more

Extremely angry at the fact that their A/C tech took advantage of a situation..I had to go to work and my wife was home when he arrived over an hour later than they projected. He (Jason C) never told her much it was going cost to change a Capacitor on a Amana A/C condenser. He changed it, gave her the bill and left! We expected $150 service fee, but the whole bill came out to $1010!! For 15 minutes of work, for a Capacitor that costs $16 on Amazon or $31 at Ace Hardware... the exact same Capacitor! That is a huge mark up and completely unnecessary on taking advantage of a woman. If he would have told her how much it was going to cost? She would've said absolutely not, I have called to complain and spoke to a Shirley (she was nice!) but so far nothing has come out of this situation. I will be contacting the BBB and maybe even go further. I have noticed that on many reviews this has happened before to many people that deal with GEM, they completely lost my trust and respect and of course my business. I will not stop until this is resolved! I will rewrite my review every day if I have too! This can't happen again and should not happen to people who put their trust in a business that supposedly has integrity. It's been 2 weeks now! Do not call GEM for your plumbing needs. They make their money by overpricing a project so that your options are to either pay 3X more than market price for the job or if you don't accept their high quote, you still must pay them $150 for a 2 minute visit. I called GEM for a faucet valve replacement (30 minutes max) and was quoted over $750. Had many replaced prior for $225. Was told they don't base their quotes on time but by some other formula. They will not provide estimates prior to arrivng at your home. Once they arrive at your home, they will quote an extremely high price so that you are stuck (either pay it out of desparation or they take $150 for a 2 minute visit), either way, the homeowner loses with this company. Over the past week, GEM has set up 3 appointments to review central air work I need done and has not showed up for any of them. I have spoken to their customer service team 3 times and the last 2 times, they promised to have a manager call me. NO CALL ever came. I've relied on Gem multiple times over the last five years and they've always come through. Each time, they were very responsive, helpful, and proved worthy of my trust. Unfortunately, that's all changed with my most recent experience. I called them for a plumbing repair. They came out and did the work, but the price seemed high, so I asked for an itemized bill, which the plumber said would be emailed to me later that day. No itemized bill came. I then called three or four days later and was told they don't provide itemized bills and instead use "task codes." I asked to speak with someone who could explain the charges to me, as it appeared from my research that the part they installed cost ~$50 and it only took about 1-hour to install, but they charged me $1189. I was told that "Ron would call me back soon." It's now been a month of me calling them to get an explanation, them telling me I'll receive a call back, and then ... nothing. I've not received a call back from Gem once in over a month. 5/12/24 -- I spoke with Melissa; she said Ron would call me back. He didn't. 5/19/24 -- I spoke with Kimberly, who then escalated the issue to Angela. Angela said Ron would call me back within 48 hours. He didn't. 6/3/25 -- I spoke with Diane, who said Angela will call back within 24 hours. She didn't. 6/9/25 -- I spoke with Rick, who said Ron was in the office that day and would certainly call me back the same day. He didn't. read more

I contacted GEM Plumbing & Heating for a gas valve replacement on my furnace. I was billed more than $300 for them to look at my furnace and tap on the gas valve. They then quoted me over $2,500 for a gas valve replacement. When I asked for an itemized breakdown, they refused as they use "flat rate pricing". Given the urgency with colder weather approaching, the pricing felt excessively high, especially based on industry averages that also account for my area. I have mixed feeling about GEM. I have called them three times and used them for repair twice. First time I called it was for a leak in the bathroom. It was causing a waterspot on the ceiling. They came over and wanted to cut the dry wall open. I thought they would have some little pipe camera unit to check but they did not. I sent them on their way. $99 service fee. No big deal. I ended up doing the repair myself and didn't have to cut the drywall out. Second time I called was to install a little baseboard heater for the crawl space. It was also to remove an old heater and also to reroute a 120volt outlet. The two electricians that came out were very nice. The cost was $1000 which I thought was fair for a crew of two for 3 hours of work. Third time I called was to tack a loose shower valve. The drywall needed to be cut out and the shower valve reattached to the stud. I bought an access panel that they installed. It took about 20 minutes and the cost was $550. A bit steep but atleast I didn't have to do it. I called them to ask about a wax ring replacement for a toilet. They told me 555+99 service fee. Now that's crazy. That is nearly triple most plumbers are charging. I called Woods Rooter and they did it for $200. So yes GEM is expensive. They are easy to contact and responsive but is that worth 2 or 3 times more? Hired GEM for their electrical services. Was told when we booked the appointment, there would be a $99 fee just to show up? We did agree to that fee, but assumed if the service was booked, the price would be reduced by amount? The answer at arrival as no. But we chose to continue. The electrican, who arrives was very personal be. He & his help underst*& got right to work. The job price came from their iPad. To install a fight, fan job was $592! Total $691. We paid, they left. Later, we looked at job from other side. There was a grap left where they cut too much. Called GEM office & they didn't want to hear it. Put if off on Mark who is just a few months away from retirement . Mark came with spackle & looks much better now. read more

BEWARE!!!! Ryan sold us a new boiler. Ryan and the installers told us that Gem Plumbing would take care of the paperwork to get us the $500 rebate from RI Energy. I had to call twice to get to find out that we did not buy a high efficiency boiler and did not qualify. To make matters worse we were told that Gem AND the North Providence Building Inspector needed to come and inspect the install. I made an appointment for 8 - 9 today 2/16/2024. I called at 9am to find our where they were, was promissed a call back, never got a call back, called again at 11am was informed that they would have the tech call me he was in the next town over. Tech called me at 11:15 he was in East Providence. That is not the next town over, but it is a drvie over the Washington Bridge that is currently damaged and traffic is being rerouted. Tech shows up at 11:55 without the building inspector he told me that the North Providence biulding inspector only requires photos. SO the installers could have taken the photos, I could have taken the photos. BUT NO I had to sit here for 1/2 a day lose 1/2 a day of work because of of Gems incompetence. I have used this company for several of Their svcs. Electrical, plumbing and hvac. I had them install two brand new high efficiency heating systems in one of my homes 2 years ago and they are both faulty, leaking and rusting on the outside from the standing water that is sitting in the bottom of the units. Gem refuses to even take my call anymore after a year of pleading for them to honor their workmanship. They refuse to even service the unit anymore because they can't figure out what the problems are with two separate but identical heating units Last few times I called they told me they didn't have any hvac technicians, they had all left the company. Seems the ownership of this company doesn't stand behind their work Once they get their money don't count on any further help from them. Btw. I was Grossly Overcharged!! At the beginning of Thanksgiving week, I returned home from a business trip and noticed my mini Split heating system was not getting up to the set temperature. Another HVAC company referred GEM. The tech was friendly and diagnosed the issue.... low pressure= low refrigerant. He didn't offer to do a leak check, but instead suggested I fill the system with the necessary refrigerant - R-410A. The price he quoted was $312 per pound. I immediately did a web search. In addition to finding out the average retail charge for this refrigerant was about $ 80-90 /lb. I also saw that you could buy a 5 gallon container of this stuff for between $200 - 300 per lb. SO... even if the $300 for 5 gallon price is wholesale, they are still marking it up over 5 TIMES!!! I asked him to put me in touch with his manager to negotiate price, and of course, no one responded. It was 2 days before a holiday weekend, so I had to choose between the hefty price or no heat over the holiday. I paid it. The heat worked ok for 2 months, and started to fail again. I hired an HVAC company that is certified to work on my brand of system. It turns out that most mini split systems aren't a "gas and Go" kind of system. There is a detailed procedure when diagnosing. A leak check was performed, 2 small leaks discovered, and repaired. The cost of the R410a from this company...... $55 per pound!!! GEM is price gouging!! I learned an expensive lesson. Contracted for the installation of a propane heater that was to be installed on May 24. Gem sent the wrong crew , as another manager had walked the premises to gather a stock list. When Gem employees arrived they did not have the unit to be installed and had to call around to find it; weren't sure how to install it once they got it. It was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and they were from the Cape side of the bridge and were upset they were sent over the bridge to Wareham. Once they started they realized the did not have the proper materials to finish the job so had to leave it unfinished. Came back on May 31, did a few more things. Installed the gas lines outside my manufactured home skirting, when I asked to have it placed inside they refused. Then told me they couldn't connect the heater as it had to be done by propane people who they would contact. Called propane company Monday June 3 , they had never heard from Gem. I scheduled an appointment to have the heater connected June 10; propane guy shows up and asks if site has been inspected. I don't know so have to call Town inspector only to find out permit was pulled for wrong address and no inspection was done. Now propane guy can't connect unit and it took me 30-45 minutes to get a Gem representative on the phone to complain. Still waiting for a phone call. read more

We called a few Plumbing Services and found that GEM was the best fit. Even though they were not the "Cheapest" They were definitely the ones for the Job. My 91 year old mother contacted GEM earlier in the day and they were very patient with her. Nick and Brian were sent from their Drain Service team to take care of a sewage backup that we had. I am a DIY'er and I was going to attempt cleaning the pipes myself but my mother wouldn't let me. "Too many things could go wrong". She was so right. Roots got into our pipes and they they needed to be cleared away. A camera system to check the pipes was clutch. Nick was even nice enough to share what he was seeing. Ultimately a horrible day for my mom but Nick and Brian saved us. Also, I have to mention that Nick and Brian cleaned up after themselves and made the house exactly like it was when they entered. My mom especially loved that. You have to realize this wasn't your ordinary job. These guys worked their butts off for 4+ hours.(not a simple pipe clean-out). Run far away from this company. There prices are outrages. The two times I called they were 2 to 3 times as expensive. They did not produce a detailed invoice. When questioned they said they are a flat rate company. Very very shady. If you do consider them, get additional estimates and you probably will not hire them. We were having a water filtration system put in and their flat rate was 12 thousand. So we went to C ulligan and paid 6500. Before that were were quoted 18K for a 10 K generator. When my split ac/heat units weren't working, I called Gem. They did warn me of a $200 fee to come for service. I agreed. my system wasn't working. They did no exploratory questioning. The service man arrived over an hour late. In TWO minutes he diagnosed problem as a simple wrong setting on the remote, and tagged an additional $200. So $400, for a 2 minute service that could and should have been handled on the phone. He admitted that he's called for this several times a week . A real racquet . Terrible so they pocket $400 a pop for a simple push of a button. If I wanted him to perform routine maintenance, it would have been an additional $400. Outrageous! Two stars is generous. read more

When I called Gem Plumbing and Heating, I thought I would be getting someone that could do plumbing and heating as the business name implies. They could do neither. They were very honest about it though. I'll give them that. Our electric water heater kept tripping the breaker. I called Gem. They were very nice on the phone. They told me it would be a $99 service call fee. I could test to see if it was just a faulty breaker myself but, $99 so I don't have to mess around with electric and water? A very fair price. They came out the next day. Very courteous. They spent 12 minutes verifying that the circuit to the water heater was good. That was it. Their conclusion as worded on the receipt "found possible faulty hot water tank". Is it faulty or not? I asked if I needed a new water heater. The response I got was "We're just electricians. We can have a plumber come out". "Roughly how much would a new tank cost?", "We're just electricians". They couldn't even tell me how much it would be to send out a plumber. Since the furnace also produces hot water and the water was still coming out fairly hot I asked, "Is there a way to turn up the temp on the furnace?". You guessed it, "We're just electricians but, we can send a furnace person". TOTAL CHARGE FOR 12 MINUTES OF WORK? $325 That's right, the $99 is just to drive the truck to your house. It doesn't include any work. That's about $27 per minute. It took them longer to fill out the paper work. I even had to put them on MY wifi so they could do it. Maybe I should charge them for that. I'll only charge them $25 a minute so, about $500. So I guess I would have been charged another $99 plus whatever else for a furnace person to come out and turn up the heat then, if the water still wasn't hot enough, another $99 plus whatever else to have a plumber come out to replace the water heater. The invoice I got doesn't even have a breakdown of what was done. Just one line that says they cashed my check. Is that even legal? They couldn't even tell me how much it would be to send out a plumber to tell me if I needed a new water heater or not. I should have put this on my charge and disputed the charge. read more

They bought out a nice family-owned company that I had been using for plumbing and heating, with reasonable prices and good service. So I called for a repair. New policy: $199 just to show up, double the usual charge in this area. Then they won't start until you sign away your life on their shiny new iPads. They tell you it's "flat rate", not hourly, but of course they can't estimate that until they come to your house and diagnose your system, for an additional charge. Bottom line, the bill was about double what it would be if it was parts + hourly labor. read more

Bloody awful. Unfortunately, zero stars isn't an option. After having spent over $900 to this company in the last 6 or seven weeks, my furnace still isn't right. The guys who came to service my water heater as part of my annual service contract did nothing, because the drain valve is plastic vs. brass, and all they tried to do as part of their plumbing "inspection" is sell me more pricey services. It seems every possible solution to my furnace issue involves another big expense; it's all trial and error apparently. 15 years ago, they were great, giving us a hardship discount on a much needed furnace when times were tough for us. I hired Gem, based on what most Rhode Islanders defer to when hiring a professional- a company's ability to saturate the market with advertising! To replace the electric heat system, we hired Gem to replace 900 sqft with gas boiler and central air. the lower level- about 400 sqft was heated and cooled with a single split air unit inserted in wall. Total cost was $19,500. The electric work was underestimated and I agreed to pay an additional $1500. even though contract was signed. As it's said " Nice guys finished last." The worst mistake by Gem was being unreachable when I tried to contact them in a panic to find out where the gas meter was to go...as NG workers stood around with machinery, ready to go. Ultimately, based on BAD advice by National Grid, meter put in wrong place, causing a myriad of problems to follow. Do as not to lose the reader to petty detailing, I add that Gem also knocked out part of my power for 2 days; fell through bedroom ceiling and harassed me about a $900. balance that their accounting office insisted wasn't owed. . It actually was owed and I regret paying it, for all the aggravation, They also failed to install, as required by law, a light in the attic and ignored my request to replace a. condensation line AND gas line rotting away after 3 years. read more

They absolutely refuse to give you the courtesy of a return call. I've been waiting a week to hear back from the plumber. I also called and asked to talk to somebody in management. Several years ago my husband was working in another state and only home on weekends. We developed some issue with our furnace and we had a service contract with Gem. I called and a serviceman came out, took a look at thefurnace and said it needed to be replaced, at a cost of $11,000 to $13,000. It just so happened that a gentleman from an appliance service was there repairing my microwave. He suggested that I get a second opinion of the furnace replacement and gave me the name and number of another Heating and Cooling business. I called the number and they sent someone out quite quickly. They repaired the furnace and charged me $73.00. They also informed me that someone had removed a screw which caused the furnace to create a loud noise. Gem had been telling me for some t that the noise meant a very expensive part needed replaced. I called Gem and discontinued any service with them. To this day I truly regret not pursuing this issue further. I should have notified the owner of Gem to report this, the Better Business Bureau and possibly the police. I tell this story to everyone and anyone who will listen. STAY AWAY FROM GEM!
