Our dog does well in a traditional boarding facility like Gem Crest. I'm deducting a star because it's a gamble with the staff. Sometimes they are friendly, other times they have a tone and attitude. I want to be 100% they want to care for my dog while I'm away and their attitude makes me think that my dog and me are an inconvenience. . I also think they would benefit from setting up a reservation system so boarding date can be revised and confirmed by both parties. This may drive up the cost of boarding but it may save miscommunication. read more

My dog was boarded with Gem Crest. As part of the intake, the staff was told that my dog required medication 2 times a day. The staff said that was not an issue. Upon picking my dog up, it was obvious that they had not provided my dog his medication as evidenced by the pill bottle and the check sheet they provided. I was charged for all services rendered and the lady at the front desk was absolutely one of the most unpleasant people I have ever dealt with. With in 12 hours of my dog being home, he died in my arms. I attribute this directly to Gem Crests horrible care and lack of providing him his medication as directed. I will never bring another animal to this place and I would urge anyone else from ever using this facility. I had used Gem Crest multiple times over the last 20 years and I can say with certainty that their service and reputation is nothing like it use to be. read more

Our dog was boarded for a week and was returned to us in bad shape. His back was injured requiring a vet visit and pain meds. His nose had an open sore and he lost weight to the point that his ribs and hip bones were protruding. We almost didn't recognize him. We will never put him through that again. read more

I made an appointment to drop my 2 chihuahuas off here. The day of drop off the front desk girl honestly seemed like the light was on but no one was home. She was a ding dong and I felt truly worried leaving my dogs there for 6 days. She had them placed in a kennel directly across from a lab who was barking non stop, my one chihuahua got scared and went out the doggy door in her boarding area and was shaking in the corner. I didn't want them to have access to free time out the outdoor run because they are so small (5lbs).. she didn't seem to think this was an issue as I was truly concerned. I brought a pack of unopened potty pads and requested they had a clean one in their pen. The potty pads were never opened. My boy dog wears dog diapers since he's a senior. Usually I change his pad 3 times a day.. there were 6 gone for 6 days. I came to pick my dogs up on 12/24 since I was told they were closed on Christmas. Got there and the same front desk girl says "oh did you come back early?" Ummm no.. it's always been the 24th because I was told you are closed on Christmas. Then she couldn't do math and tried to over charge me by $35.. until I corrected her. She rolled her eyes as if she was annoyed that she couldn't do math. I honestly won't board here again. My dogs came home safe and fine but I don't necessarily think they got the level of care I've received at other facilities. Just my 2 cents. read more

left my English mastiff for 5 days and when I got him back he was soaking wet, smelt horribl, was lethargic and depressed. his nails were all broken and his paws were swollen. his scrotum, was red, swollen, and bloody, like he sat in his feces for days. Please take your dog anywhere else., I've called and left messages, no one has ever returned my call. I spent hundreds of dollars at the vet on medication's and care because of this place., and my dog is traumatized. read more

David, the groomer at Gems, convinced me over the phone that he knew how to groom Miniature Schnauzer's. As you can see from the picture, he cut all the fur from her legs, couldn't cut her skirt straight, and darn near turned her into a hairless dog. He completely shaved off all of her chest hair and made more bare spots atop her head, chest, and neck. I had given him written instructions not to cut her long eyelashes..he cut them off anyway. And to trim the outline of her ears but leave the outer ears, not shave them. She was then to the Vet here, and she said that David didn't even pluck the inside of her ears, nor clean them. read more

Customer service is 1/5 stars. Left an online inquiry, heard nothing back after a week. I called after a week to follow up on the inquiry and the lady on the phone wasn't nice, acted as if I was an inconvenience by calling. In a rude tone she said "what inquiry are you talking about, we obviously didn't receive one". I said I put an inquiry in through their website. She then apologized that they missed our inquiry and let me put a reservation down over the phone. I asked if I could bring my dog in and come look at the facility before we decided to keep that booking slot. I asked her if we could come whenever and bring our dog, she said "yes of course come anytime before 6 and we can show you around, and you can bring your dog too". My husband and I show up with our dog after I got off work and the front desk says lady says condescendingly "what do you need". I said I was advised to drop in to see the facility. Front desk responded "well tours are over at 4pm so I don't know what you want us to do". I told her I was just doing what I was advised to do by the phone call. She did let us go back and look at the kennels quickly. From that quick tour I was very discouraged with the kennels, you had to crouch down onto your hands and knees to view the kennels. They were small like 3 feet high and 5 feet wide and made out of thick concrete blocks. Each kennel has a doggy door that they can open/close to let them outside freely during the day. That aspect was nice. Although in the kennel, my 55 pound lab wouldn't have been able to stand up or move around. They were dirty kennels. The customer service and the cleanliness of the kennels were enough for us to cancel our booking and not proceed with them in any way. Either they are understaffed or stressed but no way to treat a customer like that. I wouldn't trust them with caring for my dog if they would treat the dog owners so poorly. My gut told me they would probably forget about our dog since they seem to have too much on their plate. Not a well ran business, no structure in place for employees. read more

We tried a local" doggy resort " three times, the last time we saw our dog being neglected on the video cam. So, for our next trip, we visited about six different places, before we settled on Gem Crest Kennels. We like Gem Crest because it's very clean. We saw some very expensive dogs such as French bulldogs being boarded there. That impressed us. There's usually someone at the front desk and we see other people around. We like that our dog is not mixed in with other dogs. There's someone around 24/7. The manager has been there for years. They usually answer the phone when you call. The owner lives on the property. She's a former breeder and has owned this place for 50 years. They have indoor /outdoor runs. My dog can have his own bedding. They take the dogs out several times a day to run around on their grassy acres. We boarded our dog there for 30 days last summer and he came back happy and healthy. The staff posted pictures on Instagram for us. We boarded our dog there again in September for 12 days no problems. And we're going to board again next month . I can tell you by far this is the most professional place that we have found to care for our miniature schnauzer. My dog literally cannot wait to go with the staff as soon as I bring him there. I can't believe that they put my two black Miniature Schnauzer's up on their website. What you're seeing, the groomer actually "skinned" my dogs. I was assured that they knew how to cut Schauzer's, and yet, they had so many cuts that were down to the skin itself! And too, I had made an appointment to bring them in early in the morning. They; "Couldn't get to my dogs until 4:30 p.m.. Really? My dogs looked like crap after the male groomer butchered their coats. I know a good cut when I see one. But when I see nicks with blood because he skinned them! Horrible. I would never put my dogs through that again. Friendly staff, but what good is that if your dogs are abused? read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. My parents left their 10 year old terrier here to be boarded and while he was in his crate, another dog who was on leash with a staff member walking by attacked his nose through the kennel. Yes, my parents' dog was IN his crate and got attacked! Clearly the bars are much too far apart in their kennels. This was complete employee negligence and could have been avoided but these employees are not trained whatsoever. "The manager" Spencer met me and the dog at our local vet where he had to go under light anesthesia and get the lacerations on his nose cleaned out as one was very deep. $800 later...Gem Crest took zero responsibility for this happening despite this being their fault. They don't set up their dogs for proper living conditions while being boarded. Horrible business practices. Stay away if you care about your pets. We will never be back. read more

We've been taking our incredibly nervous rescue dog to Gem Crest for daycare. He's really scared of new people and the have been AMAZING with him. We are so thankful for the kindness they have shown our dog, who isn't always the nicest due to his fear. 2 Scottish Terriers, they were there for 1st grooming at this place. Gem Crest is close to my home and I've used them before for boarding so I was hoping this would workout too. They were there 6 hours. When I picked my pups up both had their butts shaved bald. They are so uncomfortable now, hair will take time growing back but it's like sharp pins attackiing them. Tail is to be carrot shaped but its cut super short "pencil thin". If you have a dog that needs a specific cut this place will disappoints. Oh yes, they have a book that gives line by line directions on how to cut, trim etc. dogs. read more

My 2 dogs were there for 3 days last week. When I picked them up, the girl had had diarrhea and it was still on her butt. Her eye was draining. They smelled. And I just spent a lot of money to find out they picked up kennel cough there even though they had the vaccination. I cannot recommend this facility at all. read more

I'm a wildland firefighter and kept my dog at their facility for two week periods from may all the way until October and They took such good care of him! He has all the ladies there wrapped around his paw and they genuinely seem to care about all the dogs that come through. They made it super affordable and always answered my questions when I'd call to check in or was missing him. Definitely recommend this as a safe place for your pups to go! read more

I live in the neighborhood of Gem Crest Kennels and have been bringing my golden retriever there for grooming for the past 8 years. My golden is extremely hairy and tends to be very nervous; in other words, she is a lot of work. Gem Crest employees always do a fantastic job and are pleasant and helpful. We took our two Labs to Gem Crest in July 2018 with complete and current shot records. They both came down with Kennel Cough a few days after we picked them up. They do not socialize with other dogs in our neighborhood. We called Gem Crest to inform them and Spencer just said "Oh boy." I boarded my Cane Corso at Gem Crest for a week. The staff was friendly, efficient and helpful. They took an active interest in my dog and treated her like family from the minute i walked in. I paid extra for the additional daily playtime with a staff member. Their prices are extremely reasonable. I was able to bring her giant bed, favorite bone and food. We've been taking out dogs there for 23 years and have been nothing but pleased with the care they have received. The staff is gentle with the dogs, terriers which can be a little wild! The dogs have never resisted their handling. The staff always recognize who I am calling about and seem to have a particular affection for them, which is much appreciated. Recently we have begun to take advantage of Gem Crest's grooming services and have been so please when we pick up the dogs. They are so nice and clean and look great. Of note, due to residential zoning codes, the kennel must close, on the dot, at 6pm. Otherwise they risk being shut down There is no wiggle room. We too have raced with the clock to get there on time but know, no dice after 6pm. You just have to keep this in mind. read more

We boarded our lab at Gem Crest Kennels on Goldenrod Ave. in Boise while we made a trip to Washington to buy a new house. She is 3 1/2 years old, and has never been boarded before. On the way home to get her, I ran into strong storms and high winds in Oregon, then road construction in Boise on the way to get her. I called them twice, and told them I was doing my best, but in case I was 5 or 10 minutes late, I would still like to get her, and I would pay for an extra day if necessary. They said "okay, as long as you are not more than 10 minutes late." I arrived at 6:07 (seven minutes past their closing time. I drove up to the gate, and the lady was just about to lock it. I asked her to please let me pick up our lab, and I would be glad to pay for a whole extra day. She said, "No we close at 6:00." I asked her again, to please let me pick her up, and told her about the storms again, and road construction. She was literally too lazy to take 5 minutes of her time to get my dog for me. I was in tears. I had allowed plenty of time when I left Washington, but it took an extra hour due to bad storms and road construction. I told her her that I would tell everyone I knew, and write reviews on internet and facebook. She acted unconcerned, so I am following through on my promise. I will definitely be waiting at her "gate" when she opens it at 8:00 a.m. in the morning. Unfortunately, due to her laziness, our dog has to be boarded an extra day. I am extremely disappointed. In every job, there are times when you have to work five or ten minutes late, but this lady is definitely unwilling to go the extra "inch" for her customers and pets. read more
