David, the groomer at Gems, convinced me over the phone that he knew how to groom Miniature Schnauzer's. As you can see from the picture, he cut all the fur from her legs, couldn't cut her skirt straight, and darn near turned her into a hairless dog. He completely shaved off all of her chest hair and made more bare spots atop her head, chest, and neck. I had given him written instructions not to cut her long eyelashes..he cut them off anyway. And to trim the outline of her ears but leave the outer ears, not shave them. She was then to the Vet here, and she said that David didn't even pluck the inside of her ears, nor clean them.

Our dog at Gem Crest Kennels for over three weeks last year

We tried a local" doggy resort " three times, the last time we saw our dog being neglected on the video cam. So, for our next trip, we visited about six different places, before we settled on Gem Crest Kennels. We like Gem Crest because it's very clean. We saw some very expensive dogs such as French bulldogs being boarded there. That impressed us. There's usually someone at the front desk and we see other people around. We like that our dog is not mixed in with other dogs. There's someone around 24/7. The manager has been there for years. They usually answer the phone when you call. The owner lives on the property. She's a former breeder and has owned this place for 50 years. They have indoor /outdoor runs. My dog can have his own bedding. They take the dogs out several times a day to run around on their grassy acres. We boarded our dog there for 30 days last summer and he came back happy and healthy. The staff posted pictures on Instagram for us. We boarded our dog there again in September for 12 days no problems. And we're going to board again next month . I can tell you by far this is the most professional place that we have found to care for our miniature schnauzer. My dog literally cannot wait to go with the staff as soon as I bring him there. These pictures were taken by staff after our dog had been there over three weeks. Thank you to Spencer and all the staff!

If I could give this place zero stars I would. My parents left their 10 year old terrier here to be boarded and while he was in his crate, another dog who was on leash with a staff member walking by attacked his nose through the kennel. Yes, my parents' dog was IN his crate and got attacked! Clearly the bars are much too far apart in their kennels. This was complete employee negligence and could have been avoided but these employees are not trained whatsoever. "The manager" Spencer met me and the dog at our local vet where he had to go under light anesthesia and get the lacerations on his nose cleaned out as one was very deep. $800 later...Gem Crest took zero responsibility for this happening despite this being their fault. They don't set up their dogs for proper living conditions while being boarded. Horrible business practices. Stay away if you care about your pets. We will never be back.

We've been boarding for 10 years. They are always professional and kind. Our dog can barley contain herself when it's time for a "sleepover"

These folks like pets AND humans. Easy to work with. Particularly like the spacious kennels with at least some connection to the outdoors.

We were told he was healthy. He wasn't. I brought Blue in for a weight check 3-4 weeks after his checkup. He had lost nearly a pound in that time. He wouldn't eat. His behavior had changed. No one followed up on my concerns. I called River City Vet a few days after the weight check because Blue was lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink. We were told they didn't have time for us. I took Blue in to West Vet for IV fluids every day for 3 days. My husband was out of the country and made an emergency flight home from Japan while we struggled to keep Blue alive so he could say goodbye to his favorite human. Blue died in our arms on Easter Sunday, a few hours after my husband got home. He was only 6 years old.

Before we entrusted The Dog House with our dogs, we first came and checked the place out. They have 4 main indoor dog areas. One for large breed dogs, one for medium, one for puppies, and one for senior dogs (they may also have an area for small breeds? I know they take dogs of all sizes). They have separate stall kennels for night time as well as crates if your dog is a jumper (ie: would jump over the stall wall). They also have a grassy outdoor area for the dogs to run around outside (with real grass, not fake turf that can be found other places). The indoor areas are mostly cement floor and cinder block walls with a wooden gate for going in and out. The senior dog area is the exception. Catering to older dogs who would rather be comfortable and sleep, more than play, they have dog beds and soft, comfy couches for them to lounge on. They arranged for us to bring the dogs for a half a day, so they could test them in the sleeping areas (decide if the stall or crate would be better), and see which area would be best for them during daytime social hours. They don't charge for this and I love that they place dogs individually, based on personality and temperament, not merely size. For example, Scout (our Irish Setter), is large. She is by all accounts a large breed dog. However, her temperament is super mild and she does't really have an alpha bone in her body (I've seen her go belly up submissive for small poodles). They opted to put her in with the medium dogs, which was awesome as it kept her with Boomer, who is her very best friend, and allowed her to play with dogs who are a little more her style when it comes to romping. The dogs play as much as they're up for all day indoors and every hour or so outside. Their prices are reasonable (given the level of care) and the dogs are always supervised during play. At night, they only have to go 6 or so hours before someone is there to let them out in the morning (mine go longer at home!). We decided to have them stay. They cared for them for 4 nights and we couldn't be happier. Our dogs came home happy, healthy, and exhausted from all the play. I will definitely use them any other time we are needing overnight care. I also will likely partake in their daytime daycare on occasions when I know, due to our schedules, that our dogs won't get much exercise/play time. Get to it!

I signed up with the video cam and checked daily for proof of life. It would be really nice to get updates of daily activities as well as additional services paid for; i.e. walks, hikes, kong treats, etc...we got nothing. In addition, when we picked up our dog on the second boarding I had to ask for the blanket I left with our dog. When they brought it out they said that the blanket got wet from a water dish while our dog was playing with a toy in the kennel. When I got home I discovered that the blanket was actually soaked in urine. It makes me so sad to think that my dog had no choice other than to relieve himself on the blanket...something he would never do. On the first boarding, his dog bed was wet but I chalked it up to a kong treat he might have gotten. I normally do not write reviews but was so disappointed with the care that my dog got that I felt compelled to share. This place came highly recommended to me...unfortunately I can't say the same.
