I don't know how to say this without using superlatives. I was visiting Milan and stayed nearby this gelateria, and after sampling gelato all over Italy, I simply never tasted anything quite as good as Gelateria Borsieri.
I'm not sure what they do to it, but it is the best gelato I have ever had in my entire life. I've lived in New York, the Bay Area, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and no gelato I have ever had in any of those places compares to Borsieri. The ice cream is so incredibly rich, creamy, and flavorful, and doesn't taste artificial at all--every flavor we tried was just astonishing, and we ended up planning our time in Milan around being able to go here 1-2 times a day.
Particular standouts were the nocciola, the fondante (which is a sort of very, very, dark chocolate, almost black in color) the pistachio, the biscotti gelato (which tastes like a real, non-artificial, fresh biscotti, I have no idea how that's even possible) and the Cremino--oh my god, I'm not even 100% sure what the Cremino is, but I have looked everywhere online to figure out how to make it or to confirm what the hell it is. (I think it's like a hazelnut-chocolate hybrid, but it's richer than nutella or anything like that).
Gelato is served in a cup or cone with a huge wafer in the center. The presentation also gets an A+... I don't have a picture but see what others have posted. Also funny thing I noticed while I was here--there's another gelato place across the street, and I saw an employee from that gelato store come over to this one to get an ice cream sandwich, while still in uniform.
Seriously, I am surprised that this isn't listed in one of those American food shows yet, because this is a heavenly, undiscovered gem. I am literally debating whether I should go back to Milan merely so I can eat their gelato again. Yes, that sounds insane, but it's true--I am hoping to plan a vacation to Italy to stay in the Isola neighborhood just so that I can eat gelato here as much as possible.
If they could ship it in liquid nitrogen, I would spend $100 just to have a few pints of their Cremino delivered here in the United States.
If I were given the option of giving up sex for a month in exchange for being able to eat their gelato every other day, I would do it in a heartbeat. read more
