The Moghul Tandoori Restaurant

Moghul's is a quality little curry house hidden away at the bottom of Town Street that I had never…read morenoticed until a friend recommended it to me. They don't have a booze license, but they almost encourage you to bring your own, or, as the place is surrounded by pubs and bars, you can always nip out and bring some back from any of the nearby places. The chicken korma I had was delicious, and my (much more adventurous) friend was singing the praises of the liver starter dish for the rest of the night, so it must have been something special. Moghul's don't just play it safe - they offer less traditionally stereotypical dishes such as fish and the aforementioned liver, and for this they must be praised. But most of the praise must be reserved for the prices - scandalously low for such fine cooking.

Still i think its well earned. First off remember to bring your own alcohol if you want it. Moghul don't have the licence but will happily chill and dispense anything you bring. Being right next door to a relaxed pub also makes it easy to sort out drinks if you've forgotten your own (though you may get dragged into Kareoke for your trouble!) Moghul started well, the Lassi (yoghurt based smoothie) was really well made and the various chutney's and sauces served with the starter were really nice. All the starters were impressively sized as were the nan that accompanied the main. We had some debate on the food. I'm a little easy to please and reckon mine was really nice. Very standard affair but well made and just about spicy enough for me. The foody to my right was a little concerned about the origin of his meat. I guess when you buy duck and don't recognise the taste you.... (cry fowl?) sorry. But despite reservations over the taste everyone did enjoy the food. Its a little small and on a day like we've been having recently, incredibly hot inside. But the staff were attentive (if a little dopey at times, 1 glass for the jug of water amongst 4 was funny as was the cutlery count to start with). I think for the price and given the lack of serious contenders in Horsforth that Moghul could almost warrent 4 stars, thrown into the mix in leeds it might not fair so well but for what we wanted it fit the bill perfectly.

Best. Takeaway. Ever. I'm not one for condoning poor diets,…read morebut if you're ever in need of a takeaway and you're within a 3-mile radius of Chicago's, definitely give these boys a call. Whether you're ringing up for a delivery, or stopping in on the way back from one of Town Street's numerous bars or pubs, you're assured of quick and friendly service (especially if you get served by the teenage kid with the squeaky voice - legend). On to the food then, and, as its known as a 'Chicago's Pizza & Balti', you'd expect the pizzas and curries to be something special. They don't disappoint. The curries are traditional and delicious if you're drunk or sober, but it's the pizzas that steal the show - gloriously cheesy and generously topped (infact, for the Ham & Mushroom Pizza, they seem to put a full layer of ham underneath the cheese for full coverage!). The rest of the menu is also miles beyond the competition (the burgers, fried chicken, kebabs all go down a treat), but if you want a true taste of Chicago's, get a pizza, and make it a 'Ham & Mush'. You won't regret it.

I ordered through Just Eat, and was a little unimpressed with the food arriving about 10/15 minutes later than it said it would, especially when the times given on Just Eat tend to be very generous and I'm used to it arriving before the stated time. Anyway, once it was delivered by a very friendly man, I cracked it open and was immediately impressed. I'd gone for the mixed grill kebab on naan, and the meat looked fantastic. It came with 2 little tubs of sauces too - one was a tasty chilli sauce and the other tasted like a raita that wasn't too intense. So I threw them both all over the kebab! This turned out to be a good move, and the combo worked brilliantly. With kebabs in general the sauce is all important for me, so I was already a fan once I'd tasted that! The meat was excellent too - cooked perfectly and was very tasty. The only bad point here was that one of the pieces had a massive bone in it which was pretty annoying, and I don't know if this was intentional or an accident. Either way, as annoying as it was it didn't spoil everything. Overall then it was definitely a 4* kebab, and I will be dipping in again at some point in the near future.

(Oh yeah I'm down with the Twitterverse kids). The story so far........ In a galaxy far far away....... I used to reside in a town called Batley where I was spoilt for Indian and Bangladeshi food of the finest quality but since moving to Leeds I've not had so much luck, found the odd one but they couldn't keep the standards up over 5 meals (you have to try it 5 times to know it wasn't a fluke!) but now I've found Jafran and once again I'm a happy bunny :) I actually went off takeaway curry, it was getting so bad I HAD STARTED COOKING MY OWN! They weren't up to much either lol. So I dared to delve into the world of online ordering again and paid attention to the ratings and comments rather than how many chappati's I got free and came up with Jafran and I am so glad I did! The food here is restaurant quality but at takeaway price. The portions are generous, the chappati's are so freshly made they bring a tear to my eyes and they are MAHOOSIVE!! The size of a football pitch give or take a few metres ;) Everything tastes fresh and if you ask for it to be milder they can do it (usually a good sign that they make it fresh and it's not spooned out of a massive tub that they buy in! Oh yes, we're on to your tricks, watch out lol) They are usually around 40 mins to deliver because they make it fresh, one I used near here used to deliver within 15 mins which kind of tells you something as it takes me 2 days when I cook to make anything ;) Oh and the Poppadums are like crispy angels skin they are so good! Do yourself a favour and try this place, then come back and add your comment and save me a poppadum or the kitten gets it!!

(The female delivery drivers have persistently eluded my tea tarnished tee's and jaunty good looks.) So as a man with many notches in the ol' takeaway belt I have to admit there's not many joints as good as this. The Curries are fresher than Miley's dance moves, Pack more of a clout than Mike Tyson's right uppercut/ear bite combo, and as for the chilli sauce... I get moist in my special region just thinking about it. Couldn't agree more with Chris S on the poppadum's being like crispy angels skin, and as such the naan breads are like heated quilts in which these poppadum seraphs can rest their tiresome wings. Gets a little costly don't get me wrong, and delivery can get a tad on the long side on the busier nights, but by chove it's worth it. Check them out.
