I really enjoyed my time at this beautiful campus. Located in the Garlic capitol of the world. I was attending the Police Academy at the time. I met so many wonderful people there. We would run up the hills around the campus and got in great shape..I had a lot of fun learning how to be a police officer.. We all had to wear fake cap guns all the time. We did many scenarios of real life situations. Once while doing a practice armed robbery the driver of the police car drove over my foot. He did not talk to me the rest of the time because he was mad I reported the incident. Yet he might have crushed my foot. I will never forget the good times spent here. read more

I attended gav, and received my AA is child development. The school itself is nice. I had a difficult time with the school counselors. When I first started and spoke with a counselors and explained I wanted to teach he laughed and said there is no money in that. I'll never forget it! I spent 5 years getting my AA I left which 80 units and luckily my four year university took all of them and applied it to my bachelors degree. I wish I had more guidance during the process and literally learned as I went I was excited to take all these classes but I somewhat fell off the path and went class crazy. I'm graduating this semester so I've been around for awhile. The school can be good or bad based on your own preference. I'll be talking about a lot in sections. Adding classes: adding classes online is fairly easy now. You go to mydegreeworks, find which classes you need to get done, then add them online. Most of what you need to get done can be done through their online services Parking: The very beginning of any semester, it's completely packed and tough to find a parking spot then dies out half way through. They also bumped the parking pricing up along with their printing and book store. Teachers: you'll find a variety of teachers here that you love or hate. Some teachers are the nicest, easy to get along with people you'll meet while other teachers can be down right rude, mean, perverted and will grade you bad no matter how hard you try and I'm well over a 3.0 GPA. Gym: Id have to say that I loved being at the gym while I was getting my PE creds done. No complaints with them or the staff in this department. Tutors: The tutors for the most part are students that need extra money. Some can be helpful while others have trouble with the tutoring aspect of it all. Students: I've never met a mean student before but I've always heard throughout my time here on news of stealing and sexual offenses. Never seen it ever happen but I've always heard about it. Computers: their digital media room is great but it's the only good computers around on campus. All the other computers on campus are outdated. The digital media room doesn't give out headphones anymore because they were stolen and I suggest software that doesn't get installed. I think that pretty much sums up my experience. I'm grew up in Mountain View/Los Altos area, so I'm really a "San Jose kid" at heart. Needless to say, I was furious when my parents relocated to Gilroy, because I thought it would suck. And you know what? I was right, until they started building the place up a bit, so I didn't have to drive 40 minutes to find a music store. Still, I moved away ASAP. Then I decided to go back to college, and I moved back home to save money while I started taking classes. And then I was back in G-town. My first semester there was horrible, because I wasn't used to taking classes, and there were a bunch of assholes in my digital media courses. However, when I changed my major, and made some friends in the Math and Science department, I fell in LOVE with Gavilan. First of all, it's a community college, so your iPod will probably get stolen if you don't leave it with a friend when you go to the cafeteria. And yes, the cafeteria is mediocre, but there are lots of choices, most all of them edible! The nicest thing about Gavilan is that you can get the attention you demand as a transferring student, because the student body is relatively small compared to the other community colleges I'd been to. (De Anza and Foothill Colleges.) I knew and was friends with all of my teachers, and I would often see them while I was studying, so I could get extra help. Basically, if you take advantage of what the school offers, there are plenty of opportunities to have a great time here. If you are a science, engineering or math major, may I suggest joining the MESA program? Excellent services for students, and there are lots of BBQs, too!! This review is for the whole of Gavilan College locations (I've attended classes at all 3 locations: Hollister, Morgan Hill and Gilroy) and I must say if you have an open heart please read on. The entire Gavilan college community is phenomenal, admissions / faculty / professors. However I wish I realized the promise of this school sooner. A little background... I attended Gavilan College to in order to transfer into State School in Computer Engineering, I needed to stay close to home to handle a carpal tunnel surgery but after transferring and completing a BS in Computer Engineering at San Jose State I can look back with despair - not realizing just how good I had it there. Pros: - Professors in Math, English, Political Science, Psychology departments are astounding. - Location, cleanliness and community are off the charts - too perfect. - Faculty including admissions and student aids are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The location of Gavilan College (Gilroy) is astounding, ALWAYS quiet, clean and superbly tucked away from distractions. Very easy to find a nice quiet spot to study and not be distracted. (This is something I can't imagine how much I regret not taking advantage of after attending SJSU). In addition the campuses (Hollister, Gilroy & Morgan Hill) are always clean. Never trash or outsiders wandering through (maybe a few in the Morgan Hill quad, but that's just a precursor to SJSU). The administration is always improving the campus to better the experience of all attendees, even though a majority of students in attendance are in the nursing program (at least this was so when I attended). Most of the Professors are incredible human beings - smart, kind, knowledgeable. Some of them deserve so much more praise and recognition then they receive, including: Leonard Wolff (Math - retired) Jennifer Nari (Math) Russel Lee (Math) Marc Turetsky (Political Science) Ted Brett (English) Dr. Oler (Psychology) If you ever get the chance to study under their guidance please don't take them for granted, their grace is infectious and with your commitment may take you anywhere you desire. I've taken classes here on and off for the past decade or so, and through the years, have always found the staff friendly, campus clean, prices reasonable, and faculty helpful. The greatest advantage to attending a CC is that most of the instructors appear to be more invested in their students' education than those at four-year schools, and Gav is no exception. The library is well-equipped with computers and printers, although it often feels more like a popular hangout spot than a good place to study. While the noise level isn't too bad, a pair of earplugs might be worth your while if you're serious about getting any work done. The librarians are nice and will go out of their way to help you find anything you're looking for. The admissions office and bookstore should all be avoided like the plague the first week of school. Do what you need to do online (e.g. registering for classes, paying your tuition, printing out your class schedule, checking what books are required, etc.) or in advance of this week, or be doomed to wait in line for hours. The size of the staff doesn't increase during these periods, nor does their speed/efficiency. All in all, a very friendly and helpful atmosphere in which to learn! read more

I brought my daughter to see a counselor today I did a walk-in waited for over 1 hour and a 1/2. The counselor that called us in Dr. Jesus Olivas; this man was so rude, didn't even look at my daughters file to pre register or let us know what classes she could take. He sent us away and that was a waste of time... Be careful stopping in because you might have my experience and have you whole day wasted!!!! read more

I took courses there on and off. By all means I was not impressed with the staffs. Dealt with a pregnant teacher who hated my guts. The people at the disabilities where I tried to do the test was rude. The whole class was a total joke. The student bodies consists of ignorant nincompoops disgusting hipsters. So I'm updating my next sequence class. I registered for Spanish 8B and went to the first two classes before I had a conversation with the instructor. (My last instructor for Spanish 8A was Pat Adams, and I LOVED him and his wife. Their class was fun, and they even had food for us at the end. His wife is a fantastic cook, so I enjoyed the experience very much.) Unlike my last class, this particular class was completely written and grammar-based. The first class was completely about rules on accents. Then he proceeded to give us three worksheets in class to do. I was bored to tears. I wanted to work on my Spanish conversation skills, not rehash Spanish accent rules. So the next class, I got a 100% on my test, and then he went over more rules regarding accents and stem-changing verbs. Although he is very good on explaining grammar rules, I did register for a class called "Conversational Spanish." I was getting no practice at all compared to my last class. So I went up to my instructor to see if we were going to speak in Spanish at all. He said that it wouldn't happen until the end. WTF??? His students were from Hollister campus. I guess they closed down the classes at Hollister to combine the class at the Gilroy campus. His students were nowhere near the skill level of my 8A class. (I was the only one to continue to the 8B sequence from my class.) Therefore, he recommended that I drop the class because my skill level was far beyond where he would go. So what did I do? I dropped the class...and enrolled at Cabrillo College, where they have an actual Spanish conversational class called Spanish 10A. Amazing! The students all speak in Spanish. No English allowed. Mistakes are OK, but no English! This is how you learn Spanish, by talking with your peers and being corrected by someone else who knows what sort of phrase you are attempting to say. Exactly the class I wanted to take, but not offered at Gavilan College! Adiós a Gavilán. No necesito la clase de Español 8B. Probablamente no necesito Español 8C o 8D tampoco. I requested online counseling on 7/21, received an email back saying I would have it within two days. Today is 7/28-still no counseling. Admissions have the transcripts needed to show I have the prereq for the class I want but I can not register because my transcripts in admissions is somehow not enough to get into the class and I need to talk to someone; who will look at the transcripts and say "oh yeah, you are good to go." I love Gavilan! I'm going for my health science degree and so far I've loved all my classes and teachers! Gavilan gives off the vibe that they really want their students to succeed. There are so many resources to help you in pretty much anything you need. My counselor Carla is AMAZING and just so helpful. I'm really happy with the school the only flaw they have in my eyes is lack of programs but I believe they are slowly building that up. read more

Gavilan College is the Best Community College in the Area many of the teachers are Professors at the near by CSU's like San Jose State and CSU Monterey Bay there are also graduate teacher assistants from UC Santa Cruz that are great teachers here. If your worried about sacrificing a quality education for low prices don't worry these teachers enjoy teaching and educating the local coounity. It took me a total of 5 years on and off to earn my Associates degree in Business but I got it done and I am proud to be a ram. read more

My daughter attends classes at Gavilan. So far I have found that they are disorganized. From the moment she tried to sign up for classes there were problems, they were going to email her, no email, they were going to call her, no call. She had to make several trips up there to get someone to actually talk to her and to finish signing up. I worked for Gavilan in the mid-2000s. I was a computer technician and I a computer trouble shooter(Software & Hardware) and I helped students from The Disabled Department. It was in the first few weeks of the semester. I started witnessing the abuse being put on the disabled students. They didn't either seem to care or they illegally tried to stop a autistic disabled student from using their device (Service Dog) to help them with their well being of life. The staff apparently wanted to see the disabled person's private medical file that was only be seen by the disabled person, their family, & medical doctor or therapist. Disabled students that did have an invisible disability where basically NOT ALLOWED anything devices(Like Service Dogs) that helped their disability unless they show them their papers of proof of disability and medical history and if ,... that's IF they are allowed to bring a service dog, it had to be a papered Canine for The Independents dog which has either German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, or Labrador (It's completely legal for a disabled person get a Service Dog from a private trainer,if they can themselves train their own and can be any breed or size). Any other breed is "NO NO" and it would not be admitted and the student will not allow on campus with a non-CCI dog even if it was so-called papered and disabled person proved they had a disabled and needs a service dog. Disabled abuse wasn't the only thing They also allow Art Students art and display pornographic art work the student art gallery in the library. 1. Disabled students with invisible disability seemed to have had no rights. A female student was being told to show paper proof of her autism before being allowed to have a autism service dog at Gavilan. The said student still came to get a education with her vested(The vest had patches stating it was a Autism Service Dog) service dog on campus. Gavilan College order the student to show medical doctors files as proof of her autism. One day I witnessed this poor autistic girl getting arrested and her autism service dog ripped from her and loaded into a animal control truck. Sadly the autistic girl had a melt down the police pepper sprayed her in the face, slammed her to the ground and cuffed her treated her like criminal. It's illegal to ask what her disability was and her dog was a autistic dog and service dog can be any breed(This dog was a non-traditional bred of service dog) and they don't need by law be papered and they can't ask her for her medical file either". This started when the Computer Graphic Art's Gavilan professor that was harassing her to try to force her show him her private medical history. 2. The art department allowed their students to art porn. A lot the porn that was on display in the library for the general public was beastly art work. Beastly is basically humans having sex or doing sexual acts with animals/animal-humanoids. This was also called furry artwork that was most the students in the art department were art'ing and displaying. These people are mentally ill and attracted sexually to animals. An art student from the art department had this beastly oil painting of a man being penetrated in the rectum by a Wolf (titled: "DO ME BEASTLY") and the NORMAL part of the student body hated it. it later turned up destroyed and it as left in pieces in the parking lot. This was done 3 weeks after many students complained about it. So when it was stolen and destroyed they basically called the National Guard. The student body that where against the art work where treated like they suspects in a federal/capital crime over ugly beastly smut art that had no business being display in the first place. read more

I'll try not to be a huge complainer about this school, but I'll be honest. I had problems from the start. It was the quality of education and the teachers I had. I've had two very good teachers, one a swimming teacher and one an algebra 2 teacher. The rest were biased and didn't teach much according to what the class was supposed to be about. Plus the teachers didn't care much about you nor if you learned anything of value. I was really disappointed when I saw the lack of majors as well. Mostly business, liberal arts and nursing. No, physics, no engineering, and some degrees they did offer required classes that weren't offered at Gavilan. They started dropping classes and not offering as much at this school, which caused my sister to transfer and I've heard of a few other people that had the same problem. Plus, in an odd way, it'll take a lot longer to get a 2-year degree. It was going to take me close to 4 years to get a math degree and I started out in algebra 2. I looked at other colleges and found out that classes that were split into two at gavilan were put into one semester at other colleges. It's unnecessary for them to make those classes be split up and have it take unnecessarily long to graduate from here. A lot of the people here act as though this is high school. They don't have a serious attitude and make the school have this immature and unprofessional atmosphere about it. It's not just the students but the teachers as well. It's not somewhere that encourages hard work and studiousness, but more of something that you are stuck with or trying to figure out what's going on. This last thing is more of opinion than anything but I hated the class options as well, I didn't feel like there was much to choose from when it came to your GE. I left this college and decided to transfer somewhere else. I wanted a different atmosphere and somewhere that I could get a much better education. read more

If I could, I'd give it 0 stars. I decided to try Gavilan this year since it's closer than Hartnell College, which I've been going to for the past 4 years. There's a Gavilan satellite in Hollister so I thought I'd try it. There is no parking. More than half of what I've seen is staff parking only. The staff there are rude, have the wrong information and just plain unhelpful. I'm a high school student, so there are extra steps I have to take for registration. I've checked their website, it says the counseling is open. I went to the main campus, they had a paper that said they were closed. I've been trying to register for about a month, and have just about given up. When we talk to the staff about these experiences, they just say what can we actually help you with. They just blow you off and act like you're stupid. And this is at the main campus also. Other people that I've met and talked to have had the same experiences. Gavilan also do not like High school students, so if you have a choice, check out another college. It'll save you time and trouble. read more
