There's plenty of parking, which is always a plus, and the arena features two rinks. The larger one works really well for various events like graduations and community gatherings, not just hockey. There's also a decent canteen inside, making it easy to grab a quick bite. Bonus -- if you're visiting the hospital across the street, there's two hours of free parking, which is convenient. Overall, a solid local facility that serves the community well. Saluti.

Oh, you know, just one of about a billion cool Buffalo gems…read more I've been here for two events now: the Queen City Market, and the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair. And for an indie craft fair venue, you could do much worse than the Karpeles. (Especially since it's free to use for certain nonprofits!) Both times, I've enjoyed being able to find a street parking space fairly close to the library -- then grabbing some food truck fare outside (as there are no open kitchens nearby to preclude them from joining the party). Once you're inside, the space opens up, with a big organ on one side and large, ornate windows on the other. On the main floor, it's possible to pack in dozens of vendors with tables. It's nice to feel downright cozy with everyone there (as the space is a bit drafty). There's also an upstairs space where it's possible to hold breakout sessions, readings, lectures and the like. I myself have tabled in this space for Yelp, and I have no complaints, save the draft -- and the lighting, as it's a bit dim in there. But again, for a (potentially free) space -- it's gorgeous, and lends itself well to events that, like the library, highlight the pursuit of knowledge and the building of community. If you're ever on the fence about going to an event here (or being a vendor), go for it -- it's awesome!

The Burlington Food Truck Festival is a free three day festival that took place by the waterfront…read morein Burlington Ontario at Spencer Smith Park. The festival is run by the Canadian Food Truck Festival which is also responsible for food truck festivals in Toronto, Richmond Hill, Brampton and Pickering. Admission was free but an amount of $5 was suggested which would go to the charitable cause SickKids Foundation. I went on a Sunday afternoon and Spencer Smith Park was a perfect location for the festival, right by the waterfront and lots of ample space to move and areas to sit and enjoy your food. There were forty food trucks in attendance. We went with 4 tacos from El Trompo (four for $12 tax included), the Mexican restaurant in Kensington Market also has a food truck now. A spicy lamb roti from T Dot's Naansense ($12 tax included), A paella from La Fiesta ($14 tax included). All three vendors we bought food from were all pretty good but nothing really outstanding. For those interested in alcoholic beverages, they had cans of Budweiser for sale ($9 tax included) and free samples of Budweiser's prohibition beer. Budweiser also happened to be one of the sponsors of the event. In terms of entertainment, they had a children's village with rides for the children in attendance and local musicians performing at the main stage. Overall, really well run food truck festival at a great location with lots of ample space and lots of different food options. Prices were a little on the high side but food at most food festivals are pretty expensive in general. It's a great event for people of all ages: teenagers, couples, friends looking for something to do and families.

The Buffalo History Museum hosted a Japanese Cultural Day with presentations and other cool stuff…read moreall afternoon. Taiko drumming was my favorite. The group playing the drums was very theatrical while drumming. They had acquired a few traditional Taiko drums (beautiful instruments) and improvised on the rest of them by making their own. They used old car tires with duct tape attached for the heads, amazingly they sounded wonderful! The whole performance was like a dance with this full powerful drum sound....very different and entertaining....we gave them a standing ovation. There was also a chorus who sang three songs, one of which was the "Sukiaki song"....you'd know it if you heard it. The voices blended beautifully...I was very impressed. They even had a dance with audience participation which was entertaining. I enjoyed the entire presentation. I felt I learned a bit about the Japanese culture, music and dance. This had all taken place in an auditorium, the rest was held throughout the museum. There were tables set up with displays of bonsai trees, folk dolls, a tea making demo. Plus origami, calligraphy and gold leafing that you could try yourself. I made 2 origami's a bird and a samurai hat. It was fun and meditative in a way. The woman demonstrating was helpful and very nice. Another highlight was spelling "peace" in Japanese with calligraphy....it looks weird but cool. What a fun day I had there....and it was free.
