Believe it or not the foundation stone for the building was laid in 1897 and was served as a police station for the next 73 years. In the 1970s it was turned into a Community Centre and is right next to Hill Top Library. The Community Centre is available to local people and is also available to hire. From social meetings, clubs and parties these are some of the events that can be held at the Centre. There is a Large Room and Small Room that can be hired out. Attending Tabla class at the Community Centre means I am at the Centre on a regular basis. Our class takes place in the Large Room and to be honest it is pretty spacious. Youth Clubs, Slimming Clubs as well as Luncheon Clubs take place at the Community Centre.

I think this particular branch of the Sally Army was a bit of a disappointment for me, as they stocked a LOT of clothes, but not a lot else. There was a small array of books, but nothing to pique my interest. If you're after anything for your wardobe - this shop has the most clothes wedged in out of any charity shop I went to in Halesowen!

As you walk through the front doors there is a cafe on the left - ive never been in but they have specials on a board outside and the thought of them always makes my mouth water - unfortunately they are closed when i tend to visit in the evenings. On the right as you go in is a large notice board with LOADS of info - events going on, people needing flatmates...all manner of stuff! You have to press a buzzer to get inside to reception which can seem a little off-putting but this is purely to help the clientele feel safe and sound. Once inside there always tends to be a few people milling around reception - all of the reception staff i have met are wonderfully friendly and try to put you at ease immediately. Downstairs there are consulting rooms - Healthy Gay Life offer sexual screening there during the week - and there is a big room (not been into it yet) where different groups meet - there is a line dancing group and a running group for example. Upstairs there is a further meeting room and counselling room as well as the staff facilities. Groups that meet at the centre vary but i taste of some are the Be Glad group (supporting people with depression). a prostate cancer support group, Brum Bi group, LGBTQ narcotics Anonymous, alcohol support group, trans support groups and many, many others. It truly is a gem of a facility for the LGBT community and the management team are passionate about what they do. A bloody marvellous resource!!

So really it's 4 stars for the actual building itself and 0 stars for the council. The baths were built in 1910 and first opened to the public the following year. As far as I'm aware they've never been opened since I've been in Birmingham, although there was some sort of 'open day' for people to look into the derelict building before some planned refurbishment in September last year. Now it seems the funding for the refurb has been put on hold, however, which is a shame. It's a beautiful building, with its curved red brick front, and ornate sandstone entrance. It looks quite grand, though not overly fussy, and there aren't too many buildings in Stirchley that could be called 'grand'. By and large, Birmingham is not really a city known for its architecture, so it seems a pity to let this gem go to ruin.

It really does need a bit of love and care and would be beautiful if it was renovated. I often wonder what it looked like in it's heydey. There are plans for this building to be turned into a community centre, but I think this may hinge on the success of Tesco building a massive store just down the road, which locals are much opposed to. Depending on how that particular battle plays out, we'll either see this place restored to (something like) it's former glory, or else it will continue to slowly rot, which is a crying shame. 1 star for whoever let it get this bad, 5 stars for what it could be - 3 in total!

Located in the historic Jewellery Quarter, the square itself is the only Georgian square left in Birmingham. With St Paul's Church located in the centre, the grounds make for a lovely green spot to take a picnic or catch some rays in the Summer time. It also looks gorgeous in the winter when topped with snow. It's also far less busy than other green spaces such as Birmingham Cathedral which can attract unwanted types. Their is the 24 Carrots market held here twice a year as well as live music from Birmingham's Jazz festival and I've even attended a film event at the church for Jameson's Cult Film club and seen live painting classes. Surrounding the church and it's ground the rest of the square is a mix of residential and commercial premises as well as a flourish of bars and restaurants. It's definitely a sought after area and one people pay a premium to live in and you can see why. This is a piece of Birmingham heritage that I'm proud to shout about.

It's technically a graveyard, but doesn't feel like one! In the summer it's filled with people reading, playing games and picnicking and over Winter it's full of sledgers and urban snowman makers ready for cold weather fun! With the background of the Church, it's a great place to take your lunch or just sit and while away some time enjoying the view. The area around the square has Coffee shops, bars, art galleries and restaurants. It's really easy to get to from the City Centre (a 5 minute walk) and is reasonably well signposted if you fancy an explore. It feels like the gateway to the Quarter, as from the square you can get straight to Caroline Street which is a haven for hairdressers, signmakers, spa's and deli's. A couple of great places which are just a stones throw away from the square are the RBSA Gallery and St Paul's Gallery (which showcases album cover artwork and all manner of interesting pieces). 3 times a year a community market is held on the space, so a good chance to buy locally produced food, crafts and goods while taking in the Church and meeting the residents of the area. St Paul's Square is well maintained and green all year round. If you feel like you need a little retreat from the bustling centre of town, this is a great place to chill and contemplate.
