Ive held off reviewing this place for a while as i feel im a little impartial as i work here once a…read moreweek as part of the Sexual Health Outreach Counselling and Psychotherapy (what was the counselling arm of Healthy Gay Life). As you walk through the front doors there is a cafe on the left - ive never been in but they have specials on a board outside and the thought of them always makes my mouth water - unfortunately they are closed when i tend to visit in the evenings. On the right as you go in is a large notice board with LOADS of info - events going on, people needing flatmates...all manner of stuff! You have to press a buzzer to get inside to reception which can seem a little off-putting but this is purely to help the clientele feel safe and sound. Once inside there always tends to be a few people milling around reception - all of the reception staff i have met are wonderfully friendly and try to put you at ease immediately. Downstairs there are consulting rooms - Healthy Gay Life offer sexual screening there during the week - and there is a big room (not been into it yet) where different groups meet - there is a line dancing group and a running group for example. Upstairs there is a further meeting room and counselling room as well as the staff facilities. Groups that meet at the centre vary but i taste of some are the Be Glad group (supporting people with depression). a prostate cancer support group, Brum Bi group, LGBTQ narcotics Anonymous, alcohol support group, trans support groups and many, many others. It truly is a gem of a facility for the LGBT community and the management team are passionate about what they do. A bloody marvellous resource!!

The Blue Orange Theatre is truly a treasure in the JQ. It's a small community led theatre that puts…read moreon top productions, comedy nights and workshops showcasing new and classic texts. I might have missed it, if it wasn't for a good friend noticing they had Misery on in 2011. I bought a ticket with trepidation, not knowing at all what to expect. What I got (for the paltry price of £10) was a spellbinding treat of mindblowing proportions. The actual theatre itself is very small and lends itself to productions where the audience are put in the thick of the action. Since attending Misery, I have been to see Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde (both fantastic). There is a bar with offerings of real ale (£3 a bottle), spirit and mixers and wine. The small seating area is bijoux with artwork adorning the walls and warm, welcoming staff guiding you into the venue. It's clean and fresh and doesn't feel at all corporate. The way the shows use the space is very clever indeed, with it not lending itself to complicated set changes and fancy effects. My best advice is to keep an eye on the listings. Many of their big plays have a "pay what you can" night. Tickets for these nights cannot be pre-booked, but you turn up and literally pay what you can afford to get in. If you're a bit skint, it's the perfect way to get a slice of culture and not break the bank. Also check out many of their free nights which are a great way to experience the venue.

We went for the first time to watch Treasure Island which was a play by Richard Louise Stevenson. The script was informative and the acting enjoyable. Although it's only a small theatre, there was a warm and friendly atmosphere which I believe came from the sheer passion from the actors clearly doing something that they loved. I picked up a leaflet on the way out that was promoting a number of their evening acting classes and regular workshops; something I wasn't aware was available in the Jewellery Quarter. I may give it a try and become a big star! If so, you heard it here first, darling.

The youth service here…read moreare great, they offer advice, scoldings, banter and support to develop young people's skills. With a pool table, a recording studio, big TV and a sport hall there is always something to do and at the very least it is a safe place for young people to hang out with their friends. In schools holidays the youth service offer day time activities from trips out to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The community centre acts as a space for groups and clubs to hire out from a church group, a dance crew, to karate classes there is a diverse timetable of things going on that will be of interest to someone in your family. Whilst it's brilliant having such a great community space with community members putting stuff on they still need people to support and attend, if you live nearby or have just moved to the area then pop in and chat to someone as they are a friendly enough bunch to help.

Every year he takes the young people off to do DofE, and every year they do a xmas sleigh ride. Weird? Yes. Awesome? Yes. They have a pool table, and a massive hall space which can be rented and is used for summer playschemes and evening dance classes.
