I do not recommend you to get your car to repair or give it a maintenance, I took my car to replace a key and results that they did not repair anything and they charged me $450, they told me that to repair it they would charge 1900, I moved my car and they simply checked it they could not do anything, I congratulated an expert in keys and repaired it in 20 minutes for $295, they told me that my car would need a new transmission and I walk in my car super well and calm. Recommendation never take your car to be repaired by a dealer, take it to a workshop in the end the dealer sends the workshops to do their work and they only charge the amount of money read more

The purchase of the used car we made went smoothly. When we tried to use the warranty they sold us the warranty company declined our request. Long story short, after much escalation, w/in Gteway and the warranty co, it was resolved. Ow part two..we informed the salesman we were purchasing the car for our grandson for Christmas. We never got the title. Finally called, their title person, Nicole, sent me a signed title (with her signature) and all our sales papers. We gifted the car to our daughter, with the proper form for her state. The state declined it because the car was still titled to Gateway. I have called them, my daughter has called and no one has returned our calls. What a horrible way to run a business. read more

I called to speak to someone about the Apple Carplay not working in my 2017 Subaru. The girl who answered the phone decided she knew better than a service tech so I never really got to speak to a tech. On top of that, to get a new head unit installed, she quoted a price of $1,200 to $1,600!!!! These people are rip off artists. read more

I purchased a used car from Gateway Subaru and within a few hundred miles of owning the car the brakes went out completely. I had specifically asked the sales person if the brakes had been redone and she said they had just reviewed everything in their shop and the brakes had been replaced, which played into my purchasing the car. Now after nearly killing my entire family when the brakes went out completely while on the road, I have a $3500 bill for my brakes to be redone (Gateway sent me $500 as a gesture for a service they should have done correctly in the first place) due to the corrosion on the brake lines. So there are two possibilities: 1. The salesperson lied to me 2. The service department has no idea what they are doing. I feel deceived and ripped off, but happy the complete loss of brakes didn't cause an accident or kill a member of my family. read more

Walked in knowing what MSRP was on vehicles and what they were being sold for with in the general area after. Their price is dramatically marked up on the window. Salesman was just bad. Shawn Edler attempted to persuade me that the fees the dealership added are standard and they charge everyone no matter what. That is salesman talk. I have had dealer fees removed on multiple cars I have purchased. Most places add fees however anyone knows that those are the dealerships fees they "try" to pass on to the consumer. Destination fees and such. Don't fall for it. Buying two cars right now from Muffy at Salisbury Chevy. Go to a different Subaru dealer or buy it online. It will be much cheaper. read more

My car needed to have the oil changed, tires rotated, etc. The service staff (Shane and ? - female) were very professional and nice. I did some work in the waiting room area and it was great -- clean, a place to do work in my computer, and there are great snacks and tea . The receptionist at the front desk was very kind and helpful to help with some basic questions I had. My wait time was not long. My car was all set and they even washed it which always makes me happy when they take the time to do this; so thank you. Shane went over everything for me and I will come back for sure again. I'm definitely not feeling the love from Subaru. I was told their cars are built like tanks, and their commercials are warm and fuzzy - but buyer beware of their hype! I bought a used 2010 manual Forester three years ago from Carmax that had about 55K miles on it. (Carmax checks out their cars very carefully on over 200 checkpoints, and the used manual Ford Ranger I got from them with ~57K has 292K on it now. No problems; great truck!) Bad Experience #1: Around 75K, the throw-out bearing in the clutch system suddenly broke off during my Christmas Eve travels in Delaware, wrecking the entire clutch system and leaving me stranded over the holidays for about two weeks while the dealership did the diagnosis and order the parts. The clutch had been working just fine and had shown no signs of wear. (My general mechanic at the time told me the exact same thing had just happened to another Forester he had just repaired.) Despite my ordeal and patience, the Gateway dealership couldn't even be bothered to throw in the oil change it needed or vacuum out the dang thing. I called Subaru and left a recording to let them know about my experience. I never heard back. Experience #2: Then, last February, with ~114K on it, in the middle of the Michigan winter, the starter cranked away (strongly), but wouldn't fire/start. Sometimes, after it sat for a couple of hours and it warmed up outside in the sunlight, or my mechanics rolled it into their garage, then it would start. And it would always start after I'd driven it - but not after it sat for several hours in the cold. I then took it to Glassman, where they had it over our Covid lockdown for about two months. Although it was clearly not the battery since it cranked strong, they made me buy a new battery from them. Then they replaced the four electrical relays. When I came to pick it up in the warmer spring, all they could say was that it was starting regularly, and if it stopped starting again in the cold, that I should replace the main electrical harness ($3000 for the part alone, not including labor) and IF that didn't work, then to replace the main engine harness (for a few thousand more). Wow! All that non-diagnosis after two months with their "top diagnostician" --for more money than the tradein or sale value. A couple of summer weeks later, again, it would crank away, but wouldn't start at all without a jump. A service center staffer agreed that it seemed I had gotten a lemon and they encouraged me to call Subaru corporate to see if there was anything they could do to help me. Even if I hadn't bought it from a dealership, the point was that a Forester with only 114K on it just shouldn't be ready for the scrap heap. The new harnesses (IF that would even work) would cost more than the trade-in or direct sales price, and more than I still owed on it. I said I wasn't blaming Subaru, but it seems I had gotten something of a lemon. Was there anything they would be willing to do as far as help? The answer was a resounding NO. Nada. They said I hadn't bought it from them, and it was far beyond warrantee. -But gee, they'd give me $1000 off a new Subaru. -Wow! Thanks for nothing, Subaru. So, like I said - don't be fooled by the warm, fuzzy ads. Subaru doesn't really stand behind their cars when they don't perform or last as expected. Empty hype. And sometimes, crap cars. read more

Gateway Subaru had the right attitude right from the start. They were very helpful , even at the beginning of this nightmare started by Winner Subaru in Delaware. There was nothing in it for Gateway but they stepped up to the plate to help us out and get our car fixed after 4 break downs and two months of dealing with Winner Subaru in Dover. I would give it zero stars if I could. The sale was a total disaster, Wendy simply could not be bothered to do her job (in financing). Service did not know the difference between service schedules of a 4 or 6 cylinder engines. They performed services incorrectly, or not at all. If they even bother to answer the phone, they often decide, per caller ID, if they take your call or not and never return your call. I knew more about my vehicle than they did. Never again. Purchased a vehicle from here and they did not take the time to set it up. We were told they would detail the car and install the roof rack prior to us showing up to pick it up. We came in and it was not ready, we gave them a week to get it in order and they still couldn't get it done. They then did not go over any of the features of the car and did not set up any of the services. I have now been on the phone with Subaru and Starlink for 3+ hours trying to get this in order. We arrived for our scheduled service appointment and, since no service writer came outside to greet us, we entered the office. There we found three employees, none of whom acknowledged us until asked them to help us! The service writer informed us that they were unable to look up by the VIN number our service contract even after we explained that the original was packed up from our recent move across the country! When the service was complete the repairs were not discussed with us-they just asked for payment. The car was parked, according to the service writer, "out there on the lot". Have you ever tried to locate your car among a lot full of similar models? Again, perhaps we are jaded, but all other dealers we have worked with either drove the car to the service entrance or walked us to where it was parked. Let's just say that customer service is not part of their culture. Unfortunately, they are one of only two Subaru dealers within a 50-mile radius of our home in Rehoboth Beach! In the future, should we need service, we will expand the radius to locate another dealer! By the way, their TV ads say, "minutes from the beach". It took nearly an hour to get there! read more

Gateway Subaru is simply put the single best car dealer we've ever encountered. Salesman Steve Wergin is the most knowledgeable and non-pushy car salesperson we've ever encountered. He kept us fully informed all along, worked hard to find the car my wife wanted (when the model was just released, so no dealer had many of them yet), and since the sale has remained available for questions. The sales process, including negotiation and LACK of the usual pushiness to buy add-ons that weren't right for us, was our best experience ever. Early this fall my tire went completely flat in my friend's apartment complex behind Gateway Subaru. They didn't have the replacement tire I needed in stock (I drive a Honda), however, they sent somebody out in their van to the apartment complex to pump my tire full of air so that I could drive it a short distance to a tire dealer. They came quickly and cheerfully to do this, did not charge me a dime, and even refused the $20 tip I tried (really tried!) to give the technician. With this kind of service at Gateway Subaru, I know where I'll be buying my next car. :) read more

I purchased my Subaru from Gateway back in October of 2013. I reviewed that experience as well here on Yelp... This time around I wanted to express my experiences with the service department. Since purchasing my car, I've had all my service done at Gateway Subaru... This shop is definitely out of the way, 20 minutes from work and about an hour from home. There are plenty of independent shops near me and I've preferred to have my service completed at Gateway Subaru still. I recently had my front brakes replaced, and this is my most recent experience I can speak on. Kris was my service advisor, he showed an exceptional level of professionalism, not only with my service order but with everyone waiting for the completion of their vehicles. He was honest with the work I needed done, and I felt that they were going to treat my car as if it was their own... I had an incredible experience with the service department. I love that they wash my car after each service and they generally run down some suggestions for future service items, however it never feels like they are pushing or selling you on things you don't need. If you want dealership quality work with the customer service and satisfaction provided by a mom/pop shop, Gateway Subaru service department is a very good option. As for the other reviewer here who left 1 star... I feel bad that they had an undesirable experience; however I will say that Gateway Subaru seems to have replaced some of their service staff. I remember seeing different faces in the past and the last time in I saw a whole new crew in the garage and on the showroom floor... I cannot speak for all the new employees, but I can say that this new service department staff knows what they are doing and are incredibly coherent of the customer's needs and satisfaction. I bout my 2014 Forester from Gateway on Saturday. I had test-driven several cars from my local dealers, so I knew what I wanted. I contacted Gateway about a Forester I saw on their webpage, an their sales agent, Steve, responded quickly. Within a few emails I had all my questions answered, including trade-in value for my old car, a good price and a appointment set up. After driving 2.5 hours to Gateway (I live in nothern Va) I was greeted by a friendly staff, and Steve quickly took me out for a test drive in what would become my new car. He even helped me program the bluetooth connection to my phone to be sure I would have no problems. The finance manager, Wendy, was also quickly found a financing option that met my needs and had me through all of the paperwork in minutes. While Gateway had a great verity of used cars and the salesman was great and financing seamless, the problems came after the sale. We purchased a used 2014 Outback on July 21,2016. It is now the end of September and we still do not have our permanent tags. We had to drive, round trip, 3 hours to get another temporary tag. There is no end in sight. Gateway has given us multiple excuses as to why they do not have the title from the original owner's lien holder. I always though you cannot sell a car without having the title. While the sales experience was good, make sure Gateway actually has the car title in hand before going forward with the purchase. read more

If you live in southern DE, trust me, don't bother with the sketchy places further north. Head directly to this dealer if you are interested in a Subaru. You will not regret it. Bought a Forrester here a year ago. The salesman was polite & knowledgeable and not at all pushy. The selection of available vehicles was vast and they had many in our price range. There was no haggling and we did not feel like we were being cheated. All in all it was a pleasant experience and we love our Subaru. Last month we sent my sister there to buy Legacy.
