Not far from the Gateway State Trail, this bicycle shop has been locally owned since 1992. We came here as part of a Wahoo! Adventure class educational event-we were greeted by Kyle. He toured the shop with us, answering our questions about bike maintenance. The other gentleman helped one of our group to find a new helmet-he was awesome when he said that your brain doesn't care what kind of helmet it is being protected by (only that it fit & you wear it). They did do an installation of a new stem immediately on one of the bikes that one of our group rode in on. Gateway Cycle offers a free demonstration class every Saturday morning 9:30-10:30. They will show you how to change a flat, proper lube practices & minor adjustments. Questions regarding maintaining your bike are welcome but it is a not a repair-your-bike-in-the-shop class. I have been to this bike store multiple times in the last two year.But I felt very disappointed when I tried to get my gear fixed. First I called the store about the costing of fixing, someone said it is 12.00 to 400.00 depending the situation; so I brought my roadmaster bike in, and I told them I just wanted the cheapest way to fix it ( they recommended replaced both shifting gear at first) they said they can replaced the cable; after 20 minutes a new guy who is less experienced broke them and tell me I need to replace the whole thing for 80.00 so I decide to buy parts and fix them myself and did not take the so called" broken" part with me home. But when I got home found out something is missing that supposed to hold the cable housing from moving see the picture below. I feel very disappointed with these less experienced new boy. read more

I wheeled my old raleigh garage sale bike in with locked handlebar twist gear changers from my texas desert sand riding winter marathon and they opened the door for me and fixed it in less than two hours! They had the parts in stock, were internet ebay parts prices and they discovered a broken brake component and fixed that, too. they switched me to the flipper style gear changers, new grips and new front brake component for smooth safe braking. I tried to open up the twist grip gear changer and clean it, like the 5 youtube videos I watched, but couldnt fix it. and I work on my own motorcycles..... I will use these guys to fix my bike from now on and when I upgrade to a new one, I will buy here. they did have some swell looking bikes. read more

We've been buying bikes here for ten years. The service is always great, the help is knowledgeable. Just walked in there yesterday for a light that became detached when I was riding. The young man fixed it quickly, without charge. I disagree that they will only take care of you if you're a regular. I was approached as soon as I entered the shop and I had never seen this employee before. We bought two electric bikes from them last year, along with a saris rack. I did a lot of research before buying and visited several shops. They were by far the most informative and least pressuring. Encouraged us to take several test rides. We've added every accessory since then, and their knowledge and service is always appreciated. read more

I love Gateway Cycle. I bought a super cute ladies Trek bike here in 2018 for a great price. I tend to avoid other sports stores, which can seem judgy and dismissive to middle-aged, obviously non-athletes like me. Gateway Cycle has been the opposite. All the staff people have been kind, patient, welcoming, taken lots of time to answer all my questions. They really went the extra mile making adjustments on my bike to make sure I felt comfortable and confident with my biking situation. I love the free annual bike tune-up you get when you buy your bike there. Just brought my bike in and they fixed it right up, plus took the extra time to teach me about how to use a pump I found confusing. Can't recommend this place enough. Rude people. I bought 2 bikes here a few years ago, and the sales guy told me to come back the next day at xx time. When I arrived 2 hours after that, one bike was fully assembled, but the other wasn't done. When I questioned him, he said "I've been very busy". He didn't even offer to finish the job, so I took them home and finished the job myself. These weren't cheap bikes. Last year, I went back to buy a kickstand and the guy behind the counter told me I didn't have the model bike I have, and he sold me a big clunky kickstand. I took it home and confirmed I was right all along. When I took it back, he was a jerk about exchanging it, still claiming I was wrong. I made him exchange it anyway, and received the correct unit, which worked as expected. I took my bike in for a tune up this spring, and when I picked it up today, the cap for my water bottle was missing. When I questioned the guy behind the counter, he said "I didn't see any caps downstairs ". I told him it was there when I dropped it off. He consulted with 2 other guys, then said "what I can do for you is offer a gateway water bottle". He brought over a cheap Uninsulated bottle. I responded that my water bottle was insulated. At that point, the guy that I assume was the manager suggested I was lying about the cap being there when I dropped it off. Third strike gateway. We ordered a $3000 bike in January 2021. We have purchased all our bikes from this shop. (6 family members) so this has been a total disappointment for us. Its now the end of May, no bike and we keep on getting pushed back one week at a time....Very disappointing! Not sure what's going on here but something has changed. I wasn't an insider (regular customer) when I walked with a flat tire and broken chain. This seemed to be a big deal to them. Maybe I just caught them at a bad moment, but I wasn't in a rush and I wasn't squeezing for a deal. I guess being on a bike that didn't look like the bikes on the showfloor was a negative for me here. read more

Gateway Cycle isn't as well-known as the more "centrally" located stores in St. Paul-Minneapolis, but stop here if you want service done right. I just wanted to share my excellent experiences with the staff at Gateway Cycle. Over the past 3 years I have purchased 4 trek bikes, a bike trailer, and an indoor trainer. They have always given me plenty of the time to help me make informed decisions. A couple of years ago, I transitioned from a hybrid bike to a new road bike. I have been very happy with my purchase, and now ride several times each week. I recently purchased an indoor smart trainer. Unfortunately, I had several unexpected issues develop with use of the trainer that required several follow-up visits for troubleshooting and repair. The staff was very patient and always came up with a solution that I was satisfied with. I have learned how important it is to work with a local bike shop, with knowledgeable people and a commitment to making things right for their customers. They have earned my loyalty! read more

very arrogant shop and owner. I rehabbed a bike and bought a new derailleur from them. After about 2 weeks, the main rivet snapped clean and the assembly got into the rear wheel. I went to exchange it for a new one and the floor guy, the owner and I had a major discussion about my assembly skills. They didn't care that I had assembled more bikes than any of those kids working in the back (I did it for a living back in college). Very impressed with the service I received from here recently. I purchased a bike so my son and I could do riding together, and I have not ridden since high school. Having trouble with the disc brakes, I brought my bike in. Service was fast and staff was extremely friendly. They showed me how to do the adjustments, and prices were extremely fair. I stopped by on July 2nd during a bike ride on my internet purchased ebike to enquire about a snapping sound that was coming from the crank when I peddled. At first I just asked if they had the special wrench for the crank because I thought it was just loose, needed adjustment or lubrication. The bike just turned 1500 miles. I was totally impressed with the service person. He brought the bike to the shop and first noted the peddle bearings were loose, these had inexpensive sleeve bearings. He installed some peddles with sealed bearings and we went back outside for a test ride. This did not fix the problem. Back inside to replace the crank bearings. When the peddle and cranks were removed it was very obvious the bearings were shot, very rough rotation. He measured the shaft and housing widths and had a replacement in inventory. I left the shop with new crank bearings and new peddles after a total of 1/2 an hour. Fantastic service! I finished my 45 mile ride that day and couldn't be more pleased. I learned some things about my bike and got them repaired at what I consider a very reasonable cost. I would recommend Gateway to anyone looking for a bike or bike service read more

Being new to the sport, they helped me get started with the right gear and tools, and they have serviced my bike on the spot every time I've been in a bind, big or small. They're always friendly and informative, and their pricing is extremely fair for both parts and service. The staff will make you feel welcome whether you're a triathlete or an average Joe like me. I'd heard that the owner of Gateway Cycle knows about very old bikes such as my 100 year old bike with wooden wheels, and he does! I normally work on my own old bikes, but could not get the pedal crank apart on this one. My standard bicycle tools didn't fit it, and so after tackling this job several times myself with no success I brought it to Gateway. It only took him a couple minutes to find the right tool and get it apart. This old bike had very large individual bearings in the crank and old hard grease, so I asked if he had time to clean it up, check the bearing surfaces, re-grease it and put it back together yet today, and he said sure! I'm sure it helped that February is an off-season for bicycle repairs, but I couldn't have expected better service anywhere. 'Bill' also answered questions I had about getting some rideable wood wheels and volunteered quite a bit of information about the hubs, new tires that would work with wood wheels, what type of light would be correct for it, how I could take the pedals apart to re-grease them, etc. A very friendly place that definitely deserves 5 stars. read more
