The church also has a fairly large parking garage attached, which made parking convenient. They also provided plenty of security, so in the middle of the night in the middle of downtown it felt safe.

Hey Jude don't be afraid…read more St. Jude is the patron saint of lost causes. There is a large affinity around the world to him, as he is the saint of last recourse. The name is often a signal. For example, many are aware of St. Jude Hospital. It's a place for children with terrible sicknesses, many who come there as a last hope. As a kid i remember reading special classified posts in the local paper to St. Jude in gratitude for a miracle being granted. They were often signed anonymously. Other believers in Santeria will often place a statuette of St. Jude on it's head until their prayer is resolved or light a candle with the saint pictured on it. Therefore for a church or a chapel to have this name garners a certain group of people. For years I have heard about the heartfelt services held there. A friend who is not Catholic, said he would take his family there from time to time since he could feel the faith in the room. Some people crying in contemplative prayer others just quietly seeking an answer to an unanswerable prayer. Therefore I thought to myself I should visit. The building is very easy to miss, it's right next to Sol Irlandes, with a beautiful sun mosaic in the facade. The foyer doubles as a religious gift shop, where you will get a friendly greeting. Go through the double doors and the chapel is not too much bigger. The roof swoops up like the bottom of a ship onto stain glass. You will find plenty of places to sit and quietly contemplate or say a little prayer. In the end, that is the true purpose of the chapel. To help bring you to the unexplainable feeling, that God indeed loves you and will not forsake you. Take a sad song and make it better.

The grounds are quite modest, but openly inviting. The chapel's stained glass windows are absolutely gorgeous when the evening sun is filtering through them. The lamps overhead cast the sweetest of highlights to all those inside. The walls and ceilings are worth studying as they are quite beautiful. The artistic wood carvings and brass work are also worth study. The reception area and kitchen are also quite well maintained and very clean. Beginning at the first of the year, I started looking around here in Dallas for a church where I felt comfortable. I think I may have found that place. St Matthews. Just for starters, the windows are heart-stoppingly beautiful. Congregation members, making conversation in the parish hall after services have asked me what made me decide to give St Matthews a try. I have told them that I am superficial enough that I can be seduced by beautiful windows. I am. Located at Ross Ave just south of where it turns and becomes Greenville Avenue, the church building is over 100 years old. The windows over the altar date back to the original construction of the building at the beginning of the last century. The rest of the windows were made in two different phases in the 1960s and 1970s. The building was originally part of an Episcopal girl school. Ladybird Johnson attended school there for 4 years in the 1920s. The Diocese of Dallas acquired the buildings in the last 1920s, and it has been their Cathedral ever since. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_Church_of_Saint_Matthew,_Dallas,_Texas But, most people don't go to church to look at the architecture, they go to connect with the Almighty. St Matthews provides a number of different types of services that make that connection possible. There is a once-a-month sung Compline, done at 9 p.m. on a Friday night, with only candle light (really cool and very moving). There is evening prayer every week night at 6, a quiet moment to reflect on the day, a way to step out of my regular daily life and connect with a reality that is larger, quieter and certainly more potent than anything else I come into contact with on a regular basis. There are Eucharists in private homes, a practice that harkens back to early Christian life. Sunday has 3 different types of mass (Traditional, a sung Mass, and then a service in Spanish). A really great breakfast is served after the first service and lunch after the Spanish service. I haven't tried the lunch, but I can report that a person could plow fields after that breakfast! Because it is Lent, there is a weekly Stations of the Cross. Stations is a guided meditation on the Crucifixion, beginning with Christ being condemned and ending with his being taken down from the cross and buried. It makes a good guided meditation on the central focus of Christianity. Last week, Stations was done from the perspective of Mary. Thinking about Jesus' Mother as she watched her child being put to death...well...it was very, very strong, an emotionally effecting experience. It got me. Most things don't. That did. And, lets talk about the reputation that Episcopalians have for not knowing how to make strangers feel welcomed. There is a historical basis for that reputation. St Matthews appears to be a little different in that regard. My first Sunday at St Matthews, there literally was a line-up in the parish hall of people wanting to talk to me, people interested in making me feel welcomed. That willingness to talk to a stranger has continued to impress me. There are several people who always talk to me after services, people who are obviously introverted. Making small talk isn't their default setting. They are talking to me anyway. They aren't back-slappers. They have a community they are proud of and they want to share it with others. I respect that a lot. The windows may have gotten me to show up originally, but having meaningful services and friendly people keeps me coming back.

We had given up looking but after having our son we decided it was important to find the right place so he could have a spiritual upbringing in a loving church home. Honestly we both hesitated when a friend recommended Wilshire because it has "Baptist" in the name, but we did not know that the Baptist denomination is unique in that each church is self governed in terms of teachings... so really going to a Baptist church could mean something different each place you go, which we actually think is neat. Long story short we attended a few services and both felt a familiar safety in the traditional structure of the worship service (hymns, bible readings, prayers, communion on some Sundays, sermon), but also were BLOWN AWAY by the topics covered and creativity of the messages... not to mention how ballsy the pastors and resident pastors and associate pastors all were when addressing really touchy but very important topics like sexual abuse, domestic violence, discrimination and racism, sexism, and judgement of the LGBTQIA community among countless other things. I am so proud to be a part of this church and so damn happy it exists. George Mason, the current Senior Pastor, has been there for many many years and has led the church through some important changes that also gained it and him some nasty criticism, but that hasn't stopped him from doing what's right and what Jesus would have done. This is a fully inclusive church meaning the LGBTQIA community is fully loved and welcome. They also stand up for immigrants, refugees, women, the black community, and pretty much anyone else that is discriminated against. Their ministry and mission work help so many people and I couldn't be happier about how our givings are used to help others. Their childrens' ministry and Sunday school classes are amazing and everyone is constantly learning and studying and striving to grow as good people welcoming and open to all. This is not a church that preaches "the right way to live", but instead encourages open mindedness and love to appreciate how other religions and people express God in their own ways. There are tons of activities and retreats and groups and oh my gosh it's seriously endless. The services are broadcast live on YouTube at 8:30am and 11am on Sundays (go to their site to find the link or search Wilshire Baptist Church on YouTube). George also has a podcast called Good God that is worth a listen. I don't know what else I could say so GO CHECK IT OUT!
