I had several metal welders and fabricators scheduled to look at metalwork at my home that needs serious correction and repair. In the middle of that, at 1:34 PM, I got a text from an unknown number saying: "Hey David, this is Sean from the gate company. I'll be there in 15 minutes." I hadn't remembered booking this, but I thought maybe I missed putting something in my calendar, so I agreed to meet him anyway. A guy shows up, calls himself "Sean," and from the start his attitude was rude and arrogant, as if he was doing me a favor by being there at all. He even took a phone call during the appointment and then proceeded to talk about me in Hebrew, clearly assuming I wouldn't understand what he was saying. Then came the punchline: he told me it would cost $1,250 just to give me a quote, and that he would come back on the weekend. Yes, $1,250 just for a quote before any work is even done. At that point, it was obvious he had no real interest in doing the job and was either playing games or trying to scare me off. I asked for his business card so I would know exactly which company to avoid and to make sure I never refer them to anyone. Here's where it gets even more shady: His van said: "GATES & GARAGE DOOR EXPRESS INC." The business card he handed me had the name "David," not "Sean." The phone number he used for that visit was 424‑446‑2733. I had originally emailed Win Garage Door & Gate Inc through their website. I have also been in contact with "David" at this additional number: 323‑383‑3686. It turns out the person I was actually dealing with was "David," not "Sean." In my opinion, they are using different names, different phone numbers, and different business names in a way that can easily confuse or mislead customers. Based on my direct experience, I would strongly advise staying far away from: Win Garage Door & Gate Inc Gates & Garage Door Express Inc Between the fake names, multiple business identities, and an outrageous $1,250 "fee for a quote," this is a huge red flag for me. Our gate wasn't working properly, so they came by and did a free inspection/estimate. They quickly diagnosed the problem as a bad radio and offered me three price ranges to replace it from 500, 900, and in the four digit range...that was just parts and didn't include labor. He kindly explained all the different options and suggested going with the middle option plus labor would bring it up to 1200. When we said that would be way out of our price range, he tried to offer discounts and payment plans, but it was just out of our budget so we politely declined and said we had to think about it. After a quick google search for how much new radios cost, none of them cost that much and even the most expensive and overkill models were still less than 200 bucks. The radio was also not the ultimate problem with our gate opener. These guys were quick to respond, arrived when they said they would, and were very kind and courteous...but that's where the positives end. Dear Yelpers, This is a review for the "initial inspection" of a motorized roller shutter door. To be clear, I did not pay for any services. There are several 5 star reviews. No doubt, they are a capable organization. This review merely expresses my opinion after the the first visit. I called Gates Express because I have a motorized commercial roller shutter door that stopped working. To their credit, they were quick to offer a visit in only a few days. The workman came at the scheduled time and I described the situation to him. He began to visually inspect the electronic door controller by pressing a few buttons, checking the fuses, etc. It certainly wasn't a very technical inspection as I was hoping for. After a couple minutes it appeared to me that he didn't know anymore than I did. He also didn't even care to look at the motor. He quoted me two options, $2,950 for repair, and $4,750 for replacing the controller and motor, if necessary. Given that I wasn't convinced that he knew what was wrong, I was very skeptical. I told him I had to think about it and also talk with my partner about it. He asked me if the price was the issue, and if it was possible I could talk to my partner now. I started to feel slightly annoyed. After he left, I decided to fiddle around with the control board and only after a few minutes I discovered that it only needed re-programming. I was told that my gate needed a new motor and that it would cost $950 even though I suspected that my gate could be repaired for $450 because it cost me $450 for the same issue plus a new chain. However, David insisted that it needed a new motor and that it cost more for a replacement of the motor. Still, I thought it would be better to put a new motor for $950 and then maybe it wouldn't need to be repaired again in the future so I said okay. David took out a new motor and laid it down by my Ramsey box, but then he repaired my old motor and still charged me the cost of a new one. He claimed that he said was that he'd get it running either way for $950 with or without a new motor. I said that's not what I agreed to; then, he said that the motor that he laid out wasn't compatible with what was in my box and that to make it work he'd have to change a lot more for additional items so it would cost more than the $950 to make work with a new motor. This approach is very misleading to a customer and I believe he did it on purpose as to extract $950 while using my same parts. I had agreed to the new motor and he made me think that it would cost $950 since he said that that was the problem. If it wasn't compatible why had he even pulled out a new motor and told me that he had all the parts to get my gate running again. My gate was stuck on open, which was why I hired him. He also said that he'd charge me in two payments. After forgetting to charge me the second payment of $150 on the month that we agreed upon (Feb 6th), he calls me up today and says that I owed him the balance ($150) amount 2 days ago and that I failed to pay him. How's that? He had all my information to charge me on the agreed upon date. It's not like I can charge myself. In the email (see attachment) of the receipt he sent me on the 29th of Jan. It contains ALL of my credit card information and the date he was supposed to charge me the 2nd payment of $150. It is so detailed I had to black it out to include the receipt. If I got hacked my credit card info would be vulnerable as he put all of it on the receipt so that he would charge me the 2nd payment. This is NOT professional nor is it secure. David even went so far as to leaving himself two reviews with my own phone! I truly wanted to do my own reviews and on my own time so I could be honest about my experience with Gate Express, but David pressured me to do it right at that moment. I was going to just write a short review, but he said he'd show me how quick it was to access the places for the reviews. He made me log on in. I was too embarrassed to refuse him, and shocked as I watched him saying that he'd do them for me to *save me the time*. I let it go and figured his Karma would one day catch up to him. I feel it is important for a client to relay how they feel about someone's work and experience. I believe that David was dissembling his true intent and using double speak to confuse me about his true intentions. I truly believe he overcharged me and took advantage of me because I am a woman. I will never use him again. Furthermore, I could referred him many future clients because I soon will be working in real estate and it is important to be able to refer your clients to honest repair people, but after what I experienced that will never happen with Gate Express. read more
