The kids had the run of the castle and grounds as we sat on the beautiful patio overlooking gardens and enjoyed some beverages. Our rooms were spotless and so interesting. The hosts went well beyond all expectations for us. One night, we asked for a special dinner for our group. Herr Schwartz made a traditional Bavarian meal, complete with wine pairings and the most incredible dessert. It marks one of the nicest nights of our month long holiday spanning 5 countries. The breakfasts included with the rooms were so varied and plentiful, we were able to tour the countryside on full bellies well into the afternoon. One night, we had car troubles and arrived back at the castle well past dinner time, and the kids were so hungry. Herr Schwartz reopened the kitchen and laid on a massive meal of cold cuts, buns breads and mixed goodies. We were so very grateful, and again, well fed. The location is so beautiful, and so special it beats out any place we have stayed by far. The staff are lovely, and the place feels like we stayed with friends. Cool tip: On the uppermost floor accessible to guests is an old theater with a stage and seating. Our children put on plays for us and we laughed and told stories well into the night. Also there is an on site museum that is very nice to tour. Our bill was surprisingly reasonable considering the amount of beer and food we consumed. For families, this place should be a destination. It is a bit off the beaten track, but we made it there in 50 minutes from Munich Airport - no problem. It is a five minute drive into the village of Riedenburg, which is unbelievably beautiful, and not part of the tourist track. Beer garden, river boats and bike paths. We would go back and spend much more time at the castle and the many places around it.

I was very impressed with Chef Marco. He offered complimentary paté and bread while we waited for our meal. My husband had ordered the large steak but it was already gone. They apologized and offered a small steak with free coffee for our troubles, which is very surprising since most restaurants aren't as generous. We highly recommend this place. Sehr Freundlisch.

The Hirschen lies in the shadow of the town's Burg Museum which has some nice pieces from the last 200 years. I have to say, though, that my favorite aspect was the food. Delicious just doesn't cover it. The breakfast buffet (6 Euro while I was there) is a tantalizing selection of cheese, meat, cereals (natural whole grain products), yogurts, fruits and juices. The Lunch and Dinner menus were equally enjoyable. (My favorite dessert was the Zwetschgenbavesen, a hot plum and ice cream delight.) They also have a nice microbrewery from which you can select both local and national beers. The Hirschen is Family run and it shows in every aspect from the front desk service to the individualized care of the wait staff. If you're driving through Bavaria and would like the traditional feel for an inexpensive price, try out the Hirschen. I'm betting you'll love it.
