Schongau was a beautiful, peaceful little town. Although the servers did not speak English and the menus were only in German, my oldest son did fine ordering for us with his high school German lessons. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was exceptionally good. My youngest son ate wienerschnitzel EVERY DAY of vacation, but he swore through the rest of the week and still claims that the wienerschnitzel he had here at Gasthaus zum Lindauer was the best he had all week-long. Both of my teenage boys said they wanted to go back here to eat again, and that's high praise from two picky eaters. I try not to give out 5-star reviews so that when I do, they stand out as someplace truly exceptional. I give Gasthaus zum Lindauer 5-stars for the best lunch we had in our 8-day vacation.

So when I said that he went off on me saying that "yes, it is a steak indeed but locally it is called a roast beef." My point is that the waiter should have explained that the "roast beef" on the menu is just a steak and not a roast beef when I was ordering. Instead I got yelled at... The whole fried fish was alright. The duck was also alright. Their beef broth soup with dumplings was amazing, the cheese dumplings are not cheese dumplings but meatballs with some cheese inside. I wasn't told it as well but I was pleasantly surprised. Their flat cheese pancakes were delicious too. We spent over 200 Euros for four people. I cannot say we enjoyed the experience... While my tour group was here, we all ordered cakes and coffees, which came out fantastic! I also made the last-minute decision to order some potato soup which some of my group members decided to order after they saw mine. I am an advent potato soup lover, and can say hands-down without a doubt in my mind that this is the best potato soup I've ever had in my life. Ever since I've been home in the United States I've thought about this soup every time I go to order some. I can't find anything here that compares to this, and I might have to make another journey over here to get it again. To put it bluntly this was one of the best meals of my life. The place is the way a Bavarian restaurant should be. Very friendly, local decor but not kitschy or fake, and it has fresh, delicious and very affordable meals. The kids love it, too. Mostly natives...but a little english is spoken, they have english menus available and the food is good and plentiful! A great out of the way stop.
