PitterKeller - Terrific Wiener schnitzel

We'd rolled into Salzburg and were ready for that full Austrian experience. PitterKeller was…read moreperfect: one of the oldest beer cellars in the city. It has that charm you feel when you enter, with wood paneled walls and an Alpine ambience. I was all about the Wiener Schnitzel (veal, "Viennese style") with parsley potatoes and cranberries. It was executed perfectly. My husband and I went all out and ordered the Salzburger Nockerl. This is the dessert meant for two people made famous in Salzburg - a vanilla egg soufflé whipped to look like three peaks then served with a raspberry or cranberry sauce. It's like a meringue or soufflé. I'd hoped for raspberry but the cranberry we had was still good and contrasted well with the meringue. Do not attempt to eat this by yourself though! Definitely come here if you'd like some great Austrian food.

My husband and i split a dinner bc we wanted a dessert after dinner. The ribs we had were so salty as well. A side was a small corn on the cob and it was chewy and dry but I think the corn is just how it is in Austria-more chewy than soft. The dessert we were looking forward to-Salzburger Nockerln-was very tough. Like the egg whites had been beaten too long and hardly sweet at all. We have had this many places and it was just not good. Very disappointed in the caliber of the food. Normally I write glowing reviews but tonight this was just meh.

PitterKeller - This is just one third of the Salzburg Nockerl. I'm sorry I didn't get a photo of the three peaks in all their glory.

Our servers were super cool and the place was like a traditional beer hall, I loved it. Try it out if you are okay with about a fifteen minute walk from the train station.

We ordered the pork knuckle, pretzel with beer cheese, and beer. The pork knuckle arrived cold and lacked flavor, while the pretzel didn't seem particularly fresh either. The beer pour was especially disappointing--the amount of foam/head was ridiculous, and for a place associated with such a famous brewery, I expected a much better pour. The photos really speak for themselves. Service was the biggest issue. We repeatedly tried to get someone's attention to place our order, but the servers seemed to avoid eye contact and kept waiting for someone else to help us. Even getting the check was a struggle--we eventually had to get up and go to a counter ourselves. It felt like the staff had little interest in actually serving the customers. The atmosphere itself has the traditional Bavarian beer hall feel, but unfortunately, the poor food, disappointing beer pour, and especially the terrible service completely overshadowed it. I really wanted to like this place, but based on our experience, there are much better beer halls and beer gardens in Munich.

I stopped by here by myself maybe around 6pm on a Monday and was seated at a table because the bar was full, but told I only had an hour since they were full for reservations. That was totally fine and knew I wouldn't be more than that. If you are coming here with other people, you definitely need to make a reservation. The servers are dressed in traditional German clothes which is a very cool touch. Everyone I spoke to also spoke English. I ordered the schnitzel and whichever beer they recommended with it. I am typically NOT a beer person, but of course I had to try one and whatever this was, was very good. The schnitzel was so crispy and also very delicious. Highly recommend this place!!

The service at Haufbrauhaus was terrible. I ordered a seasonal beer and it was fantastic and the outside seating was wonderful on a perfect day. Our server was awesome and spoke perfect english. I ordered the charcuterie board and it had a couple of hummus scoops and a beef stick and this scoop of stuff that was way too rich for me with pieces of butter in it, but the Germans love it. The pretzels that came with it were great and the cream cheese scoop went perfectly on the pretzel. One of the best meals in Munich, give it a try.
