Oof, while the promise of this divier bar in a small town seemed good on the surface, their prime rib sandwich left a lot to be desired. Just imagine some shaved beef in an ungrilled hot dog bun and that's their prime rib...with a side of fries. Surface was fine, but we were hungry and it took a while for the waitress to take our order after dropping off the menus; so I wish they were just slightly more attentive to us putting the menu down and being ready, especially since the place didn't seem busy. I'd come back here again, but probably try more of their burgers/other items. The prime rib dinner item looked good, but only available on weekends, but their prime rib sandwich isn't a contender for the sandwich prize; but it will do if you're passing through. read more

Gasthaus is certainly a popular local spot in Cherokee. We stopped in on a Saturday night and had about a 20 minute wait. The atmosphere and decor is very unique and has a vintage German vibe. We started with the potato skins, they were a little over cooked but very loaded. My wife and I were camping about 15 miles from Cherokee this weekend and decided to check out Gasthaus. We had been there before and had enjoyed it. This weekend was a complete different story! We were both very disappointed. There was nothing good about the seafood skillet. Everything was very dry. It tasted as if the rice had been setting in a warmer for hours. It tasted as if they assembled the skillet then "cooked" everything in a microwave. The Fatboy Burger had potential until I bit into it. I'm fairly certain the hamburger patties were frozen. This caused them to completely soggy up the bottom half of the hoagie bun. They had minimal flavor. The tomatoes were not fully ripe and were almost crunchy. The only thing that saved this from a One-Star review was our waitress. She was very polite and helpful with my beer selection. We were both pretty excited to eat here this weekend. It was a very disappointing let down. Sadly, we will not be going back. read more

I've eaten here three times, in 2019 and 2023, while passing through Cherokee. It's held up each time! The food is quality, well-portioned, classic American fare. Gets real busy on the weekends as there isn't much in Cherokee but the small staff handles it well. read more

This place is a hidden little gem in a beautiful small town. You walk in and there's so much fun stuff EVERYWHERE, you're greeted by smiles on the sweetest ladies... all while taking in the ambiance of your new favorite restaurant. The menu is heavy on the burgers and nonexistent on the German... except the American sauerkraut on the rueben sandwich... but that's okay! The burgers are AMAZING! It's hard to find good burgers these days with everyone cutting corners. (Being an out-of-towner I NEVER expected to find the best burger I've had in forever, this far from home... and in small town Iowa... I wonder if they can ship it... lol.) We started with some apps, which were really yummy, and the variety app is the perfect size for 5 people to share! The main course came just enough time after the apps were done... and let me tell you, they looked just as good as they tasted! The cook, owner and staff really care about this place and their jobs... they have pride in what they do, and it shows! I have to say, save room for the cheesecake.... I'm not kidding, okay you can skip dinner and eat dessert first, it's the best cheesecake I've ever had! It's going to be hard to eat out back home after this delicious meal! We were passing by this place on our way across Iowa and it turned out to be a great stop in a quaint town. It's downtown location makes it look like a bar but the inside has great memorabilia and the people are super friendly. The menu is not extensive but has a great selection of sandwiches, burgers, entrees and even a few classic Italian and Mexican dishes. I had their jumbo shrimp entree and it was a good plate of food with waffle fries and garlic bread. My wife had the chicken quesadilla and it was good but not great. I think they did it too large. Our other guest had the Teriyaki Chicken entree and said it was good but almost to imbued with teriyaki. Again, service was really good and it is a great little spot off the beaten path - I'd recommend giving it a shot, if I got back that way we would dine there again. read more

The Gasthaus is a favorite place that I like going to with friends and family. The food is good, especially on Wednesday night when they have their Fish & Shrimp platter, always way more food than I can eat, and I'm a big guy! I like the decor, much of which is from local sources, I offered them my "Ouch" handicap license plate. You'll have to look for it, next time you go there. I especially like going there between 2-5pm, they are very accomodating after the lunch crowd, and on occasions I have met there with former coworkers to play cards in the afternoon to visit and catcch up on each other's lives, have drinks, food, and free popcorn. It's an easy going place, friendly staff. It is a little too dark in there, they should install a dimmer system to their lighting system, so they make it a smidge brighter in there. They need to brighten up the drab atmosphere of the outside of the Bar & Grille. If you want good food, good service, a friendly place, with a hometown vibe, simialr to the TV series "Cheers", you should check this place out! read more

Stopped here for dinner (with a *large* group of family,) after my grandmother's memorial service a few months ago. Coming from a city *significantly* larger than Cherokee, I'm used to adjusting my expectations regarding awareness and accommodations of my food allergies when eating out accordingly ("Celia-what?!") I wasn't expecting to have many options for non-homemade food in Cherokee, and Gasthaus was an unexpected surprise. The server we had was knowledgable about what gluten-free meant, knew my menu options, offered alterations and substitutions, and also pointed out potential cross-contamination issues. This is above and beyond what I'd ever expect, so I was both thankful, and ABLE TO EAT WITHOUT FEAR! The food and drinks were delicious all around for both myself and the rest of my extended family, and the service for the entire group was excellent (no small feat when you're trying to serve thirty people in a tiny space, while keeping up with your other tables, too.) The decor is a mix of rustic and eclectic (style-wise, sort of along the lines of what a place like Applebees puts on its walls, except *actual* vintage pieces and antiques.) The ambience is a bit on the dark side, but not in a bad way (it just made it harder for me to look at all the neat stuff on the walls!) If I had an excuse to be in Cherokee more often these days, I'd certainly make this place a regular stop. Keep it up! read more

My husband and I stopped here for dinner last night. I had the Wednesday special, fish and shrimp, with a lackluster side salad; only lettuce, shredded cheese and croutons. He had the bacon cheese burger on a pretzel bun, served with crispy, seasoned waffle fries. My meal was fairly good; the fish was hand battered North Atlantic Cod and decent sized popcorn shrimp. Everything was tasty; hubby enjoyed his burger and loved the fries. However again, the salad that came with my meal was disappointing. Our waitress was friendly. There were a number of sirloin and prime rib Sandwiches on the menu that we would like to try, so we will most likely be returning. read more

We were headed to Cherokee for some "junking" at the local resale/antique shops. I had looked up Gasthaus, and with the reviews and pictures, we decided to try it out. Sure glad we did! Sometimes you find these gems in small towns, and this has to be the crown jewel. Everything from entering the door to leaving was wonderful - great decor, great service, and oh - the great food. The food was edible, but I was very disappointed by the unexpected add-ons. We went to the Gasthaus with a vegetarian and ordered a beef burrito, with broccoli instead of beef - $2.00 extra. Two burgers with onion rings instead of chips - $11.00 extra - the price of two full appetizers and more than the cost of the hamburger. On the positive side the beer was a good deal. At $4.00 it was just twice as much as the onion add-on for my burger. Normally I love this sort of place, but price gouging changed that. Just as you think you've seen everything near you, you look around again & there's some little antique trinket ya missed. Service: friendly cozy fast, although it wasn't busy. I wanted to go in after the lunch crowd & before dinner. Food: had the Burgermeister... phenomenal! A lil small but with the fixins & seasoned waffle fries with a side of ranch which tasted homemade & a dew I was satisfied. Meant to order the cheese cake & forgot... bummer. Called to say there was a mistake and the lady was very rude. Said she doesnt make mistakes. Told me that i would have to pay for the mistake to be corrected. Standard sysco pub fair for lunch. My burger was ok at best with seasoned waffle fries out of a bag. Good decor, friendly staff that never came back to check on me or fill my glass a second time. All homemade....got the special of the day which was slices of prime rib made into a fabulous sandwich.
