The lake is about 55 acres surrounded by 12 acres of woods and riparian habitat. This is a nice place for fishing and wildlife observation. There seems to always be yellow-rumped warblers in the wooded area. This is a quiet lake as no gasoline motors are allowed. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are the way to go. Efforts have been made to reduce trash fish in the lake. You can look forward to catching bass, pike, bluegills and perch. There is no size limit; and you can catch 10 fish a day. If your idea of boating is to go fast and make a lot of noise, this lake is not for you. However, if you want to quietly paddle out and catch your supper this is a fine place to do so. There are bathrooms and a rotunda for a rainy day picnic. There is a small pier for offshore fishing and a small boat ramp. If you are driving around with a canoe on your roof and a fishing pole, it would behoove you to stop here for a couple hours of quiet outdoor pleasure

Drive down Karbon and ease right into the parking lot. Carstens Lake is 21 acres. The lake averages 12 feet deep, with a maximum depth of 28 feet. The bottom is described as "muck". Water quality is considered "poor", this is considered a "deep seepage" lake with no inlet or outlet. Only small electric motors are allowed. The launch ramp is only three feet deep. A few years ago the county "nuked" this lake to kill off the rough fish. Adult northern pike and bass were planted to repopulate the lake. Now days your best shots are for bluegills and largemouth bass. You might get lucky and catch a crappie or two . The limit for bluegills is 25, for bass 5. There is a small picnic area with a BBQ pit. There is no potable water. Bring your own. There is a "bathroom". Carstens Lake is sparsely used. It is a quiet, serene little lake that yields satisfying fishing. I prefer using a canoe or some other small, light boat. Use a light rig. Bring a lunch and drinks and what ever you like to smoke and enjoy a laid back time on a laid back lake

There is another set of regular bathrooms at the concession stand near the middle back from the beach a ways. There is another concession stand that sells some Asian food, slushies and boba tea on one end of the beach in the parking lot. Not sure what their hours are for either place. There is a nice walking path made of blacktop I believe. People of all ages were there and many going into the water, some building castles in the sand and others floating or playing frisbee in the water. No glass containers are allowed btw. But, we carried our cooler and snacks with us. It's very clean and the sand is so soft. Popped up the umbrellas for a little shade and towels out for reading. I didn't see it but one of my kids said there is a section for dogs. I did see a sign for the regular part of the beach that said dogs allowed on a leash from 6-10 am. Easy breezy parking and lots of it including overflow parking. Parking is so close to the beach makes hauling stuff not too difficult. Had a great time and everyone was very respectful.

The water is always cold. There is some brisk winds that come off the lake, even in the summer. But a nice place to hang out and enjoy the day.

We reserved a site at Scheffel's Hideaway Campground based on a comment from a camping acquaintance…read morethat the area was beautiful, friendly, and cooler than average. Since we had never been to that part of Wisconsin, we decided to give it a try. We've been full-time RVers for 14 years and can honestly say this is our favorite spot out of at least two or three hundred other campgrounds including everything from boondocking to resorts. The grounds are immaculate, as are the restrooms and two laundry rooms, which are handicapped friendly. The roads, while unpaved are of a fine shell or gravel and hard packed so these are easy to traverse using a walker. There are miles of popular, well-kept walking/bicycle paths nearby going from Point Rawley to the north, past the park and on to Manitowoc to the south. The owners of the park, Tammie and Paul, love the park and are working tirelessly at making it more beautiful every year. There is a lovely pond, lots shrubs and flowers as well as bat houses, bird houses and feeders (we watched goldfinches as we ate dinner several times), whimsical decorations large and small scattered throughout which are changed with the seasons. A number of sites have shade, and most of those without full grown trees have young trees about 15 feet tall or so and will provide more shade every year. Guidelines for the park are clear and reasonable: guests are asked to respect the space and people which is of course, simple common courtesy. All-in-all, this is is our idea of the perfect combination of a natural and well-kept park and friendly people. We are looking forward to our next, longer visit next year.
