And while St. Matthews has a lot going on, it lacks convenience stores and/or bodegas. In addition, the owner and the employees are always super friendly and kind. More than once I have forgotten my wallet and they let me take my items anyway, knowing I will come back as a loyal customer. When they were out of their fried chicken, they fried some just for us. They have also been doing a lot of remodeling, so the place offers even more products. It's just a great little store in a convenient location.

In the past month, they've felt unwelcome in the store. This evening, I walked my son and daughter up to the store so they could buy some candy. I waited outside. My son came out and said that once again, the man behind the counter was rushing him. The man said, "come on, hurry up" and was tapping his hands on the counter. This is the second time this has happened. There was another incident in which my son and his friend rode scooters up to the store. They propped their scooters up against the building and were yelled at and told that they would have to pay $800 if they damaged the building. So, they left and shopped elsewhere. After we walked home tonight I drove up there and politely asked the man if there was a problem with the kids being in the store. I explained the experiences my kids have had. I asked him if he told them to hurry up. He said that he did and went on to explain that a couple of weeks ago "20 kids" came in and they did damage to the store. I feel terrible that happened to him but I told him that my kids were not part of that group and have always been polite. Not to mention, the first time he rushed my kids was several weeks ago. I explained that we support his business. He said he didn't care if it my kids were not part of the group that caused problems. His exact words were, "I am not a Walmart. If you want to shop somewhere else, you can shop somewhere else. Kids have three minutes to shop in the store and that rule is for all kids." It is a bit disheartening that, after trying to talk to him and understand the situation better, he basically told me to shop elsewhere. We won't be shopping at the St. Matthews Mini Mart again. We love to support local businesses so this is a bit disappointing. If you have kids who like to shop there, you may want to supervise them.

I was in the area today and stopped in to pick up a few groceries. The Recommendation is mostly for the Amazing people that still work here from when I lived in the area. This store used to be SO CLEAN and well loved and taken care of! Most of the people working here are older and honestly they shouldn't have to be the ones to clean it. I'd think that Value Market could have it professionally done. It needs a really use a deep cleaning in the entry way and actually throughout the store. They still have a nice selection of fresh produce and a good variety of meat, which is what they used to be known for. I'd much rather shop at a smaller family owned business whenever possible but I do hope they step up their game and do some cleaning. It's sad to see it in such dis-array, and well, actually dirty.

Deli smoked sausage sandwich? $2. Country fried steak sandwich? $3. Biscuits 69 cents. Hot wings, beans, chili, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, cornbread. Want a can of beer with your lunch? That's $1. Webb's is also reasonably stocked with decent produce, which is great since there is no supermarket in Phoenix Hill. So if you want to pick up a couple of tomatoes or onions or bell peppers, you generally can count on getting them here. Webb's received a federal grant to provide equipment and support to carrying healthy items as part of the city's "Healthy in a Hurry" program, and this is the result. I got a turkey sandwich, with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on wheat bread. And I'll tell ya, its nothing sophisticated but it was pretty darn good. I would definitely come back - they had fried chicken and fried cod that looked delicious! Oh one other thing - Webb's does accept credit cards, but you need to have at least a ten dollar purchase, otherwise they add 25 cents onto your bill. Maybe you care about that, maybe not.
